In a concern for sustainable development, the rational use of electrical energy implies having transportation networks capable of transmitting large quantities of electrical energy over long distances as well as adequate storage plants. This double requirement is the consequence of the fact that electrical energy has to be produced and consumed simultaneously, as direct storage of large quantities is not economically feasible. Nowadays, as thermal power plants and run-off river plants are always working at

Literature on linear induction motors (LIMs) has proposed several approaches to model the behavior of such devices for different applications. In terms of accuracy and fidelity, field analysis-based models are the most relevant. Closed-form or numerical so ...

Traditional magnetic levitation trains (maglev) generally use two or three separate systems to perform propulsion, levitation, and guidance (PLG) functionalities. Linear electromagnetic motors (LEMs) may be used for propulsion, electromagnetic suspension ( ...

This article presents the modeling, simulation, and practical application of a double-fed asynchronous motor-generator for pumped-storage plants equipped with a three-level VSI cascade. The problem of DC unbalance control is studied in this particular appl ...

The present paper addresses the use of a Windows™ DLL to simulate the real code of a DSP for faster development time and advanced testing, especially in high power systems. The development of power system control usually starts with simulations and the development of the control is done with the simulation tool native blocs. Once the control is validated in simulation it is usually C coded into a DSP and real test can be performed. The present paper introduces a way of simulating the real DSP code to fill t

Variable speed pump-turbine units have become nowadays an interesting way to increase stability of electrical power networks due to their high level of operating flexibility. Different advantages offered by variable speed pump-turbine units for both pumpin ...

An unbalanced DC-link voltage regulation strategy is proposed for a three-level voltage source inverter used in the rotor cascade of a double-fed asynchronous motor-generator. The major problem in determining the presence of the unbalanced component is inv ...

Nowadays, multilevel VSIs (Voltage Source Inverter) begin to be widely used in middle and high power installations such as variable speed drives, FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) and windformers for example. In these systems, 2 VSIs are put back to back to create a frequency converter. The present paper will investigate the entry level VSI of such a frequency converter, by comparing classical control and state-space control applied to this VSI.

This article describes a field-based analytical model of single-sided linear induction motors (SLIMs) that explicitly considers the following effects altogether: finite motor length, magnetomotive force mmf space harmonics, slot effect, edge effect, and ta ...

The paper presents an optimization design of an in-wheel BLDC motor for a kick scooter. The optimization is performed using a genetic optimization tool combined with a FEM commercial software. The new contributions of the paper are: (i) introduction of three operating modes for which the motor is optimized with a reduced number of FEM simulations and (ii) new approach to simultaneously maximize the energetic efficiency, minimize the cogging and respect the thermal constraint.

Linear electromagnetic motors (LEMs) have been proposed, developed and used to propel high-speed (i.e. speed > 100 m/s) levitating vehicles. However, few real implementations have demonstrated the feasibility of these machines at such speeds. Furthermore, ...

The present paper describes the implementation of an industrial regulator in a real time Hardware-In-the-Loop simulation of a mixed islanded power network including precise models of the hydraulic system. The studied network is composed of three different types of electrical power generation systems and a consumer.

The present paper addresses the practical implementation in a test bench of different control strategies for the start-up of a varspeed group in pump mode. In varspeed groups using a double-fed induction machine supplied by back to back voltage source inve ...

Thanks to the rapid growth of multiphase drives (MPDs), multiphase (MP) rotating electrical machines have gained popularity in the scientific community, demonstrating several advantages compared to traditional three-phase ones. Although MP rotating machine ...

This paper deals with a fixed-frequency variable-speed motor/generator with 3-level VSI (Voltage Source Inverter) cascade. The 3-level VSI is applied to a DASM (Doubly-fed ASynchronous Machine) for large pump storage plants. The extension to 3 levels is th ...

The present paper investigates the complete regulation strategy for a large double-fed asynchronous motor-generator equipped with a 3-level VSI cascade for applications mainly in the field of pumped storage plant. For the present application, the specific problem of the DC link capacitors voltage balancing is investigated. Also a sensorless method for the determination of the rotor angle is proposed and verified in practice. Measurements of the system performed on a laboratory low power system are discussed

This article describes a simultaneous and decoupled scheme for the control of levitation and propulsion forces of single-sided linear induction motors (SLIMs). The proposed control scheme utilizes a highly accurate SLIM analytical model to ensure the opera ...
