Programmable multistable mechanisms (PMM) exhibit a modifiable stability behavior in which the number of stable states, stiffness, and reaction force characteristics are controlled via their programming inputs. In this paper, we present experimental charac ...

Eye movements consist of spherical rotations, with orientation generally constrained by Listing’s law. Our main result is a complete explicit formulation of ballistic eye movement under the Listing constraint. We present a conceptual framework for eye movement bas-ing the dynamics of Listing motion on the equator of the sphere of unit quaternions, which we call the Listing sphere. Analytical dynamics shows that ballistic Listing motion corre-sponds to free particle motion on the Listing sphere. Thus, ballis

Binary logic gates are building blocks of computing machines, in particular, electronic computers. One variant is the programable logic gate, also known as the reconfigurable logic gate, in which the logical function implemented can be modified. In this pa ...

Compliant mechanisms can advantageously be preloaded by buckled beams in order to reduce their motion stiffness, and therefore also their actuation forces. However, preloading compliant mechanisms has the side-effect of modifying the deformation of their f ...

The most important property for accurate mechanical time bases is isochronism: the independence of period from oscillation amplitude. This paper develops a new concept in isochronism adjustment for flexure-based watch oscillators. Flexure pivot oscillators ...

Short beams are the key building blocks in many compliant mechanisms. Hence, deriving a simple yet accurate model of their elastokinematics is an important issue. Since the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory fails to accurately model these beams, we use the Timos ...

In this paper, we attempt to show some consequences of bringing the body back into higher education, through the use of performing arts in the curricular context of scientific programs. We start by arguing that dominant traditions in higher education repro ...

Flexure-based linear stages have become prevalent in precision engineering; however, most designs suffer from parasitic shifts that degrade positioning accuracy. Conventional solutions to mitigate these parasitic motions often compromise support stiffness, ...

Compliant mechanisms are of great interest in precision engineering. In this paper we propose a higher order continuation method to help their rigid-body kinematic design. The method helps to investigate the choice of a mechanism configuration through the ...

While flexure time bases have gained significant traction in the watchmaking industry thanks to their high quality factor and monolithic design, maintaining a stable frequency in varying orientations of wrist watches with respect to gravity remains a signi ...

A mechanical slit mask mechanism has been designed for the Near Infrared Spectrograph of the James Webb Space Telescope. This mechanism was successfully tested at a cryogenic temperature of 30K, in vacuum. The reconfigurable mask allows to form 24 optical ...

This paper presents novel multi-degrees-of-freedom force sensors based on flexures used as mecano-optical transducers (named flexure body) and white light interferometers used as opto-electrical transducers. Together, these transducers make up a load cell exploiting the nanometric accuracy of Fabry-Pérot interferometric measurement to reach milli-Newton force accuracy. The design focuses on the flexure body composed of three sections: a base (attached to the measuring device), a compliant section which defo

Surgeons generally assess the mobility of the ossicle chain by manual palpation using rigid elongated hooks inserted through the ear canal. As the applied forces are in the range of a few grams equivalent force, the measurement remains subjective and its r ...

Since the invention of the pendulum clock by Christiaan Huygens in 1657, precision timekeepers have been regulated by oscillators. Although the pendulum is not an isochronous oscillator, its introduction as a time basis for clock regulation led to a signif ...

Despite centuries of research and significant advances, the escapement mechanism used to count and maintain oscillations of mechanical time bases remains a complex mechanism and a major source of energy losses. We showed in previous work that, instead of t ...

An innovative surgical tool prototype dedicated to safe puncturing has been developed for the treatment of retinal vein occlusions (RVOs). The tool is manufactured monolithically by femtolaser printing in fused silica. It consists of a programmable bistabl ...

Thanks to their absence of play, absence of contact friction and possible monolithic fabrication, flexure pivots offer advantages over traditional bearings in small-scale, high accuracy applications and environments where lubrication and wear debris are pr ...

This article presents a novel fully mechanical flexure-based single axis inclinometer with degressive sensitivity based on an inverted pendulum with visual readout. The mechanism comprises a cantilever beam with a tip mass attached to its free end inducing axial compression load in the beam, thus reducing its bending stiffness. By adjusting the mass, the sensitivity of the mechanism-defined as the ratio between the beam deflection and the inclinometer inclination-can be tailored. In theory, this sensitivity

Flexure based mechanism (1), comprising:- a first body (3) supported on a second body (5) by a guide arrangement (7) comprising at least one flexure arranged so as to permit said main body (3) to displace relatively to said second body (5) from a neutral position according to at least one degree of freedom and subject to a restoring force acting in said at least one degree of freedom and directed towards said neutral position, one of said first body (3) and said second body (5) being a fixed support;- at le

This paper presents a new planar flexure-based bistable two-jaw parallel gripper mechanism. The bistability of the mechanism is enabled by a pinned-pinned buckled beam suspended onto two cross-spring pivots. External energy is required only during the swit ...
