Transport of suspended sediment between the two reservoirs of a pumped-storage plant in Switzerland was monitored over an 8-month period. A turbidity probe was installed on the upstream end of the pressure shaft, in which real-time monitoring was ensured b ...

The transport of ballast caused by the overflowing of longitudinal drains is a prime example of the interactions between the railway track and its environment. In such conditions, water flowing from the platform, along with debris, may drag the ballast off ...

Turbidity current is generated in an inclined lock-gate flume under a large amount of suspension supply. By opening the gate, turbidity current generates and flows to downstream. The turbidity current maintains its interface structure and progresses with constant frontal velocity. The inner velocity profile of the quasi-steady body by ultrasound velocity profiler (UVP) falls on the similar convex lines within the fluctuations in space and time. We conclude that turbidity current progresses in a steady state

Sediment management is a challenging discipline, especially in regions where the storage capacity of reservoirs decreases due to sediment accumulation. This paper shows an innovative and holistic modular technical approach to the problem, considering a gre ...

Hydrodynamic waves are an unsteady flow motion generated by rapid water level rise. In nature, such events can be found in dam-break waves, impulse waves and tsunamis. These phenomena are rare, but highly destructive. The present study is based on an exper ...

To forecast riverine floods, short-range forecasts are normally provided. In such cases the initial hydrological conditions highly influence the predictability of a flood event. The study evaluates the potential of an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for the operational flood forecasting system in the Upper Rhone River basin. Observed discharge date is used to update the initial conditions of the hydrological model. Past flood events in the Reckingen subbasin are modelled to assess the robustness of the method

Due to the European electricity market liberalization and the appearance of other renewable electricity producers, an increase of installed peak power capacity is relevant to provide larger amount of electricity in a shorter turbine duration. When the disc ...

The Arbogne River is located mainly in the Swiss canton of Fribourg. The River was meandering through the plane at a very low gradient and several exceptional historic floods with large sediment accumulation are mentioned. After important river training wo ...

Dam heightening can provide large incremental positive impacts on storage with minimum incremental negative impacts, but requires deep knowledge of the structure and its foundation. Very high gravity dams are usually well studied and documented due to their importance and complexity. Such profound knowledge of the dam-reservoir-foundation system considerably reduces the uncertainty about site conditions already at an early stage of design. Furthermore, the availability of monitoring data and safety assessme

Reservoir sedimentation is worldwide a significant long term problem and requires in view of the current mitigation measures an alternative and more sustainable solution. This challenge motivated the present study with the purpose to develop an alternative efficient method to release sediment out of a reservoir. The concept is based on the release of sediment through the headrace tunnel and turbines whereby a special focus was set on the fine sediment in the area in front of the power intakes. Specific jet

Orifices are largely used in pipeline systems. The most common application is to measure the discharge of the water flowing through. However, orifices may be used to adapt hydroelectric power plants submitted to moderate increase of installed generation ca ...

Orifices can be used for throttling surge tanks, which allows for increased design discharge at existing powerplants without significant geometrical modifications. To improve knowledge about the behaviour of orifices and their cavitation risk, a systematic ...

The ASTM C1138 "Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Concrete (Underwater Method)" method aims to reproduce conditions in which flowing water carries solid particles, causing abrasion of the tested concretes. The method uses rotating steel balls to simulate the frictional effect of suspended and bedload particles on the specimen surface. The test setup is composed of a rotating agitation paddle that induces the abrasive forces of the grinding balls. This study focuses on the differences in hydro-

Driftwood belongs to natural rivers just like water and sediment do. A sound ecosystem requires driftwood, although it might jam at civil structures, altering the flow section and rise the backwater. Safety considerations suggest removing wood from rivers, ...

Free-surface vortices have long been studied to develop an understanding of similar rotating flow phenomena observed in nature and technology. However, a complete description of its turbulent three-dimensional flow field still remains elusive. In contrast, ...

The Snowy 2.0 project is a large-scale pumped storage facility located in the Snowy Mountains in the SouthEastern part of New South Wales (Australia). It is an extension of the existing Snowy scheme, linking Tantangara (upper) and Talbingo (lower) reservoi ...

Venting of turbidity currents is known as an efficient measure to prevent reservoir sedimentation and is applied in many reservoirs globally. It has several economic and ecological advantages compared with other evacuation methods. In the literature, numer ...

Sediment management is an important part of river rehabilitation and management. Global case studies provide a growing number of examples of successful sediment augmentation measures that can counter the adverse effects of disturbed sediment regimes. The i ...

The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) is a quantitative index that determines the capacity of a given area to meet habitat requirements for a specific species with respect to given variables. The degree of universality of this index is not well understood yet. The purpose of this work is to present the results of a literature data re-analysis of HSI for brown trout and demonstrate the existence of a universal level of similarity in the ranges of hydraulic variables for the considered species.

Connectivity between the hyporheic zone and the flow is essential for the development of benthos and the reproductive success of spawning fish. The infiltration of fine sediment leads to clogging of the riverbed, reducing porosity and vertical water exchan ...
