Disentangling core and edge mechanisms of the density limit in DIII-D negative triangularity plasmas

The density limit is investigated in the DIII-D negative triangularity plasmas which lack a standard H-mode edge. We find the limit may not be a singular disruptive boundary but a multifaceted density saturation phenomenon governed by distinct core and edge transport mechanisms. Sustained, non-disruptive operation is achieved at densities up to 1.8 times the Greenwald limit ( n G ) until the termination of auxiliary heating. Systematic power scans show distinct power scalings for the core ( n e ∝ P SOL 0.27

Challenges of Locked Mode Avoidance in the Low-ν* ITER Baseline Scenario Plasmas in ASDEX Upgrade

In AUG, the requirement to explore the low-ν* regime within the same ITER baseline scenario parameters, i.e. a Greenwald fraction of ~0.85, q₉₅ ≈ 3, βN ≈ 1.8, and H98 ≈ 1, has been addressed by inducing density pump-out through n=2 magnetic field perturbations. This approach required additionally relaxing the high-δ plasma shape to δ ≈ 0.1 to enable sufficiently strong density pump-out. However, at low density also the generation of locked modes was observed which deteriorates the plasma performance. Severa

Electrochemical Oxygen Pump Assisted Solar Thermochemical CO2 Reduction

Maintaining low oxygen partial pressure during ceria reduction is critical for efficient solar thermochemical fuel production, yet conventional routes rely on energy-intensive gas sweeping or vacuum pumping. We demonstrate a ceria-based reactor operated with a hybrid oxygen removal strategy; moderate sweep gas coupled with electrochemical oxygen pumping (SG + EOP), that enables in situ oxygen removal with reduced auxiliary energy. Increasing EOP’s operating potential from 0.5 to 1.0 V at moderate argon flow

Application of a multi-rate state observer for real-time plasma density reconstruction and control on TCV

Nuclear fusion is a promising long-term solution for large-scale and low-carbon energy production, relying on the confinement of high-temperature plasmas in magnetic devices such as tokamaks. Achieving and sustaining high fusion performance requires operation close to physical and technological limits, where plasma behavior becomes highly nonlinear and sensitive to perturbations. In this context, accurate real-time observation and control of plasma kinetic profiles, such as the electron density, temperature

Pre-shot RAPTOR-FBT simulations of TCV ohmic and NBI-heated discharges

Associated publication [1] C.E. Contré et al 2026 Nucl. Fusion 66 086053 General description This dataset contains predictive simulations of TCV tokamak discharges performed using the RAPTOR [2] fast radial transport code. Transport fluxes are estimated with a gradient-based transport model [3], newly extended to model transitions from Positive (PT) to Negative Triangularity confinement and include ion temperature modeling [1]. Simulations were run predictively from the pulse schedule, using only the lin

Compact Printed Thermal Airflow Sensor for Ventilation Applications

A novel compact thermal airflow sensor, utilizing screen-printed technology on foil, has been developed for integration with throttle dampers in ventilation systems. Compared to conventional airflow measurement techniques, the sensor reduces material consumption and spatial footprint while maintaining adequate measurement accuracy. The sensor system consists of a central heating element and six temperature sensors, all fabricated using cost-effective screen-printing techniques on Kapton foil. Computational

Method for the systematic integration of multi-energy networks and low carbon resources in cities

Luc Girardin

The design and operation of building energy systems (BES) has become a subject of great interest, given the latest energy policies adapted around the world, namely increasing the energy efficiency and the share of renewable energy sources (RES) while reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to the provision of domestic energy services. Within the latter context, this work addresses the issue of optimal sizing and operation of BES while integrating an advanced CO2 based district energy network. Indeed, unli

Targeting the Retrofit of industrial utility system and heat exchanger network

A new methodology is herein suggested to target the retrofit of utility system and heat exchanger network (HEN) of large-scale chemical plants for energy eciency improvement purposes. The methodology is based on the optimal site energy conversion unit integration and combined heat and power production, while still integrating the heat recovery identified by the heat cascade. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation is employed for this purpose. In order to identify the best degree of site integ

INTEGRATION OF A SEASONAL STORAGE

Central solar heating plant is one of the most profitable, the most efficient and the most easily installable solar technology. However, there is significant limitations for its installation on all the northern roof. There is a gap between the summer heat production and the consumption during this season and inversely for the winter. Then, adding a storage medium ,as a buffer for the heat supply, permits to deal correctly with these gaps. The aim of this project is to modelize a storage concept including a
