Photopolymer composites for temporary protective coatings and printing applications

Polymer protective coatings find use in a manufacturing setting as either weak temporary protective coatings used during multi-step industrial processes, or robust coatings aiming for prolonged, or if possible, permanent protection of surfaces. Such coatings are also utilized within the Swiss watch industry. Known for its precision manufacturing, yet relying on manual application of these resins, the watch industry can significantly benefit from applying polymeric resins through automated processing, and if

A Similarity Measures-Based TOPSIS Method for Neutrosophic Hypersoft Set with Application in Crop Production

Neutrosophic sets and hypersoft sets are both fuzzy set extensions that deal with various aspects of uncertainty and missing data. Combining these two frameworks within Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) allows choosing an optimal solution from a wide range of scenarios and alternatives. TOPSIS is a significant practical method for evaluating and selecting numerous possibilities, which ranks preferences according to how closely they resemble the ideal solution. This study used similarity and distance mea

Decoding lower-limb movement attempts from electro-encephalographic signals in spinal cord injury patients

Restoring lower-limb function in patients with severe spinal cord injury (SCI) remains challenging. Spinal cord stimulation may enhance and reinstate lower-limb movements, but it is either used in open-loop control or its control depends upon residual motor functions, limiting its applicability in severely paralyzed individuals. The decoding of motor intentions from cortical signals may provide an interesting alternative in such cases. Electroencephalography (EEG) is an ideal solution since it is noninvasiv

Solution-Controlled Dissolution of Supplementary Cementitious Material Glasses at pH 13: The Effect of Solution Composition on Glass Dissolution Rates

Ruben Anton Snellings

Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are widely used to partially replace portland clinker in blended cements. Reducing clinker contents further without compromising the development of early strength necessitates a better assessment and enhancement ...

Experimental parametric study for hydraulic design of PKWs

Anton Schleiss, Jean-Louis Boillat

The implementation of a new type of labyrinth spillway, called PKW (Piano Key Weir) reveals as a performing alternative for increasing the overflow capacity of existing dams. The optimal hydraulic design of such structure is however not obvious due to the large number of involved parameters. The present work explores experimentally the most relevant geometrical parameters, such as width, length, height and slope of keys and also the upstream and downstream flow conditions. The rating curve of a unit structu

Prevention of micromotion-related periprosthetic bone loss using local release of bisphosphonate : theoretical developments and experimental validations

Vincent Stadelmann

Total joint replacements are highly successful in relieving pain and restoring movement of damaged joints. However, the lifespan of the implants is limited. The implant's long-term stability depends largely on the preservation of periprosthetic bone. Debri ...

Digital holographic microscopy for nanometric quality control of micro- optical components

Christian Depeursinge, Tristan Colomb, Etienne Cuche, Florian Charrière

In this paper, Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) is presented as a powerful tool for quality control of micro-optical components. It will be shown that not only the single-shot full field-of-view nanometer axial resolution makes DHM an ideal solution for such samples, but the DHM numerical wavefront correction formalism is perfectly adapted to provide advanced features like aberration coefficients, radius of curvature or optical surfaces roughness measurements. Both transmission and reflection configurat

Electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy in the characterization of calcium phosphate precipitation from aqueous solutions under biomineralization conditions

Philippe Buffat, Elena Suvorova Buffat

Calcium phosphate precipitation obtained from aqueous solutions at room and body temperatures and pH 5.5-7.5 were investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), transmission electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Supersaturated solutions of calcium phosphates were prepared by different methods of mixing of the stock solutions: diffusion-controlled mixing in space, convection-controlled mixing on earth and forced mixing on earth and wi

European structural materials development for fusion applications

Maximo Pedro Victoria

Leading long term considerations for choices in the European Long Term Technology programme are the high temperature mechanical- and compatibility properties of structural materials under neutron irradiation. The degrees of fabrication process freedom are closely investigated to allow the construction of complex shapes. Another important consideration is the activation behaviour of the structural material. The ideal solution is the recycling of the structural materials after a relatively short 'cooling' per

On a two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic problem .2. Numerical analysis

Jacques Rappaz

We consider the numerical approximation of a two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic problem by standard finite element techniques. The numerical analysis is made for the case of regular solutions of the continuous problem. Error estimates are derived for the selected numerical method.
