Euclid Quick Data Release (Q1): XXII. An investigation of optically faint, red objects in the Euclid Deep Fields

Our understanding of cosmic star formation at z > 3 used to largely rely on rest-frame UV observations. However, these observations overlook dusty and massive sources, resulting in an incomplete census of early star-forming galaxies. Recent infrared data from Spitzer and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have revealed a hidden population at z ∼ 3 − 6 with extreme red colours. Taking advantage of the overlap between imaging of the Euclid Deep Fields (EDFs), covering about 60 deg2, and ancillary Spitzer o

in the southern hemisphere. As targets for the 4MOST-CRS, we present a selection of an r < 19.25 magnitude-limited sample of Bright Galaxies (BG) and a colour selected sample of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) based on DESI Legacy Surveys DR10.1 photometric data, in the redshift ranges 0.1 < z < 0.5 and 0.4 < z < 1, resp

Temperature–Color Interaction: Subjective Indoor Environmental Perception and Physiological Responses in Virtual Reality

Marilyne Andersen, Jan Wienold, Giorgia Chinazzo, Kynthia Chamilothori

Objective Temperature–color interaction effects on subjective perception and physiological responses are investigated using a novel hybrid experimental method combining thermal and visual stimuli from real and virtual reality (VR) environments, respectivel ...

Donor Effect on the Photoinduced Interfacial Charge Transfer Dynamics of D−π–A Diketopyrrolopyrrole Dye Sensitizers Adsorbed on Titanium Dioxide

Jacques-Edouard Moser, Ulf Anders Hagfeldt, Heewon Bahng

In this report, we investigate the effects of a strong electron-donating group on the electron injection and recombination processes of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-sensitized TiO2 films by comparing the dynamics of triphenylamine donor-installed DPP_A and d ...

Temperature-colour interaction: is colour affecting people’s thermal perception?

Marilyne Andersen

Over the last century, a large number of studies has tried to answer to the question whether coloured stimuli could have an effect on human thermal perceptual evaluation (i.e., temperature-colour interaction). In the building research area, this effect is referred to as the “hue-heat-hypothesis” (HHH) and has gained attention due to the fascinating idea of heating and cooling with colours. After a brief digression on previous studies on HHH, this presentation focuses on two experimental studies carried out

The effect of short exposure to coloured light on thermal perception: a study using Virtual Reality

Marilyne Andersen

This study investigates the effect of short exposure to coloured light on thermal perception. To give the impression of natural daylight passing through coloured filters, but avoiding the drawbacks of conducting an experiment with daylight, continuously changing due to daily and seasonal variations, and to weather conditions, we investigate the use of Virtual Reality as a means to control the visual conditions, creating a hybrid environment with thermal and visual stimuli from the real and virtual world, re

Put on that colour, it fits your emotion: Colour appropriateness as a function of expressed emotion

Christine Mohr

People associate affective meaning with colour, and this may influence decisions about colours. Hue is traditionally considered the most salient descriptor of colour and colour-affect associations, although colour brightness and saturation seem to have par ...

Project 24 - lighting concept

Marilyne Andersen

Project 24 is an urban art project in the underpass (M1 metro) in the north district of EPFL. This underpass is a key way for access to the EPFL campus, and to reach the new northern district and the SwissTech Convention Center. The project is focused on the design of the lighting concept of the renovated underpass, taking into consideration aesthetics, colour and energy concepts.

Potential of magnetron sputtered magnesium fluoride containing thin films for the multilayer design of coloured coatings for solar collector glazing

Jean-Louis Scartezzini, Paul Muralt

In this work, the potential of magnetron sputtered magnesium fluoride (MgF2) and MgF2 containing composite coatings for coloured solar collector glazing is investigated. Coloured thin-film interference coatings on the reverse side of the collector cover glass give solar collectors an aesthetic appearance, which facilitates their integration into the building’s envelope. Hereby, integration means that the solar collector is no longer recognisable as technical device. Moreover, its appearance is the one of an

Photocatalytic degradation of Remazol Brilliant Blue (R) by sol-gel derived carbon-doped TiO2

Ravindranathan Thampi, Michael Jon Mattle

A simple, cheap and reproducible method to produce a C-doped TiO2 photocatalyst is presented, which can harvest visible light. This doped catalyst is able to degrade a stable organic dye molecule, Remazol Brilliant Blue (R) (RBB), under sunlight and visibl ...

Bleaching and photobleaching of Orange II within seconds by the oxone/Co2+ reagent in Fenton-like processes

Albert Renken, Lioubov Kiwi, Javier Fernandez

Accelerated bleaching, photobleaching and mineralization of the non-biodegradable azo-dye, Orange II, was obsd. with oxone in solns. with Co2+-ions. The bleaching rate of Orange II in the dark was found to follow a first-order kinetics with respect to [Co2+] with a rate const. of 20 M-1 s-1. Fitting of the Orange II photobleaching exptl. points in the presence of the Co2+/oxone reagent was carried out and followed the trend known for reactions presenting a chain radical branched mechanism. The photobleachin

Robust Playfield Segmentation using MAP Adaptation

A vital task in sports video annotation is to detect and segment areas of the playfield. This is an important first step in player or ball tracking and detecting the location of the play on the playfield. In this paper we present a technique using statistical models, Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) and Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) adaptation. This involves first creating a generic model of the playfield colour and then using unsupervised MAP adaptation to adapt this model to the colour of the playfield in each

Measuring Colourfulness in Natural Images

Sabine Süsstrunk, David Hasler

We want to integrate colourfulness in an image quality evaluation framework. This quality framework is meant to evaluate the perceptual impact of a compression algorithm or an error prone communication channel on the quality of an image. The image might go through various enhancement or compression algorithms, resulting in a different -- but not necessarily worse -- image. In other words, we will measure quality but not fidelity to the original picture. While modern colour appearance models are able to predi
