Cultural Heritage-Based Game Design A Case Study of The Hill

In recent years, video games have emerged as a significant medium for historical and cultural representation. Los Alamos, the core site of the Manhattan Project during World War II, holds immense historical and cultural value both in the United States and globally. Based on oral history sources, this study presents the design and development process of “The Hill,” a historical video game based on the cultural heritage of Los Alamos and explores in detail the role of video games in the digitization, dissemin

How Well Does GPT-4o Understand Vision? Evaluating Multimodal Foundation Models on Standard Computer Vision Tasks

Multimodal foundation models (MFMs), such as GPT-4o, have recently made remarkable progress. However, it is not clear how well these models understand vision in detail, es-pecially when it comes to tasks beyond question answering. In this paper, we benchmark the popular MFMs (GPT-4o, o4-mini, Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini 2.0 Flash, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Qwen2-VL, Llama 3.2) on standard computer vi-sion tasks (semantic segmentation, object detection, image classification, depth and surface normal prediction) using

Language-based Sample-efficient and Synthesizable Molecular Generative Design

In recent years, machine learning-based generative models have emerged as promising tools for de novo molecular design, offering a data-driven means of proposing novel small molecules with tailored properties. These models are increasingly applied in drug discovery, with generated molecules experimentally validated and currently in clinical trials. However, two persistent challenges limit translational practicality: The ability to efficiently tailor the generation towards (computationally predicted) propert

Video Tutorials for Using the Solidipes Curation Tool

Data structure and information This dataset contains 12 videos exported as .mp4 files, as well as their source .prproj (Premiere Pro Project) files and all media used in them. For each individual video, the name of the .mp4 file, raw file and media folder is identical. The structure of the data inside the "data" folder is as follows : Folder/files structure: final_videos - folder containing the final exported videos solidipes-*.mp4 - the individual videos raw_files - folder containing the Premiere Pro sou

Detection of Age-Induced Makeup Attacks on Face Recognition Systems Using Multi-Layer Deep Features

Sébastien Marcel, Zohreh Mostaani

Makeup is a simple and easy instrument that can alter the appearance of a person’s face, and hence, create a presentation attack on face recognition (FR) systems. These attacks, especially the ones mimicking ageing, are difficult to detect due to their clo ...

Integration of Real-Time Speech Processing Technologies for Online Gaming

This work demonstrates an application of different real-time speech technologies, exploited in an online gaming scenario. The game developed for this purpose is inspired by the famous television based quiz-game show, “Who wants to be a millionaire”, in which multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty are asked to the participant. Text-to-speech synthesis is used to read out the questions and the possible answers to the user, while an automatic speech recognition engine is exploited to get input from

Orchestrating Learning Analytics: A framework for researchers, teachers and developers

The meteoric rise in popularity of the Learning Analytics (LA) field and its recent advances, has attracted the attention of researchers, teachers and educational technology system developers alike. However, despite the profusion of LA proposals and tools (in the last year, the submissions to the LAK conference have almost doubled), very often practitioners are unsure of whether a certain LA tool or method is suitable for them, or how to translate the tool’s outputs into practical pedagogical actions. In a

Technological and physics assessments on heating and current drive systems for DEMO

Minh Quang Tran, Laurie Porte

The physics requirements of the heating and current (H&CD) systems in a Demonstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO) are often beyond the actual level of design maturity and technology readiness required. The recent EU fusion roadmap advocates a pragmatic appro ...

Point localization in Multi-camera system

Point localization in multi-camera setups has been widely studied in computer vision. Recently, in finite-resolution camera settings, a consistent and optimal point localization algorithm called SHARP has been proposed, under the assumption of noiseless camera poses and error-free matching. In this work, we relax this assumption on noiseless camera poses and propose a new point localization algorithm. We formulate this point localization task as a gradient-ascent optimization function, for maximizing the ob

In-Network Packet Scheduling and Rate Allocation: A Content Delivery Perspective

We investigate two important problems in media delivery via active network agents. First, we consider streaming multiple video assets over a shared backbone network through an intermediate proxy-server to a set of receiving clients. The proxy is located at ...

Child-robot interaction during collaborative game play: Effects of age and gender on emotion and experience

In this paper we investigate how boys and girls of 8 and 12 years old experience interacting with a social robot (iCat) during collaborative game play. The iCat robot and a child collaborated together to play a simple card guessing game. Post-game questionnaires revealed that 8 year old children rated their subjective gaming experience significantly more positively than the 12 year olds. All interactions were recorded, and fragments were shown to judges in a perception experiment, which showed that 8 year o

A development method boosted by synchronous active objects

Claude Petitpierre

This paper presents a novel development method for interactive and distributed applications. The benefit that this method provides is that the design gives clear guidance towards the implementation. The method is based on three main elements: a concept of synchronous active objects that is closely related to that found in CSP; the Java environment; and a selection of the diagrams defined by UML. This approach alleviates many of the most serious problems that are encountered when using GUI builders, which hi

The Impacts of Awareness Tools on Mutual Modelling in a Collaborative Video-Game

This paper describes the findings of an experimental research concentrating on collaboration in a multi-player video game. The overall goal is to study the cognitive impacts of the awareness tools. The focus is in finding an effect on performance as well as on the representation an individual build of what his partner knows, plans and intends to do (i.e. Mutual Modelling). Using an awareness tools has a significant effect by improving task performance. However, the players who were provided with this tool d

Joint Server Scheduling and Proxy Caching for Video Delivery

Pascal Frossard

We consider the delivery of video assets over a best-effort network, possibly through a caching proxy located close to the clients generating the requests. We are interested in the joint server scheduling and prefix/partial caching strategy that minimizes the aggregate transmission rate over the backbone network (i.e., average output server rate) under a cache of given capacity. We present multiple schemes to address various service levels and client resources by enabling bandwidth and cache space tradeoffs
