Céphalosporine

Les céphalosporines sont une classe d'antibiotiques β-lactamines. Avec les céphamycines, ils forment le sous-groupe des céphems. Les céphalosporines ont été isolées de cultures de Cephalosporium acremonium issues d'égouts de Cagliari en Sardaigne en 1948 par le scientifique Italien Giuseppe Brotzu. Il a remarqué que ces cultures produisaient des substances agissant sur Salmonella typhi, l'agent responsable de la fièvre typhoïde. Les chercheurs de Sir William Dunn School of Pathology de l'Université d'Oxford ont isolé la céphalosporine C. Le noyau de céphalosporine, l'acide 7-aminocéphalosporanique (7-ACA), est dérivé de la céphalosporine C, et est proche du noyau pénicilline, l'acide 6-aminopenicillanique (6-APA), la différence résidant dans l'hétérocycle thioazoté, fusionné avec le bêta-lactame, à six atomes (thiazine) pour les céphalosporines et à cinq atomes (thiazolidine) pour les pénicillines. Les modifications des chaines latérales de 7-ACA ont conduit au développement d'agents antibiotiques utiles, et le premier dérivé cephalothin (cefalotin) a été commercialisé par Eli Lilly en 1964. Les céphalosporines inhibent l'élaboration de la paroi bactérienne, en interférant avec la synthèse du peptidoglycane ou muréine, par un mécanisme d'inhibition compétitif des transpeptidases extra-cytoplasmiques. Professor Stewart Cole is an international authority in bacterial molecular-genetics and genomics. He has made outstanding contributions in several fields including: bacterial anaerobic electron transport; genome analysis of retroviruses and papillomaviruses; antibiotic resistance mechanisms; and the molecular microbiology of toxigenic clostridia. His studies on isoniazid and multidrug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, together with his pioneering work on the pathogenicity, evolution and genomics of the tubercle and leprosy bacilli, have made him an undisputed leader in the field of mycobacterial research. The findings of his research are of direct relevance to public health and disease-control in both the developing world and the industrialised nations. He has published over 250 scientific papers and review articles, and holds many patents.

Francesco Stellacci

Francesco Stellacci graduated in Materials Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano in 1998 with a thesis on photochromic polymers with Prof. Giuseppe Zerbi and Mariacarla Gallazzi. In 1999 he moved to the Chemistry Department of the University of Arizona for as a post-doc in the group of Joe Perry in close collaboration with the group of Seth Marder. In 2002 he moved to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an assistant professor. He was then promoted to associate without (2006) and with tenure (2009). In 2010 he moved to the Institute of Materials at EPFL as a full Professor. He holds the Alcan EP Chair. Francesco was one of the recipients of the Technology Review TR35 "35 Innovator under 35" award in 2005, and the Popular Science Magazine "Brilliant 10" award in 2007. He has been a Packard Fellow starting 2005.

Antibiotique bêta-lactamine

Les bêta-lactamines (β-lactamines) ou antibiotiques β-lactame sont une large classe d'antibiotiques qui comprennent les dérivés de la pénicilline, les céphalosporines, les monobactames, les carbapénèmes et les inhibiteurs de la β-lactamase, en bref, tout antibiotique qui contient un noyau β-lactame dans sa structure moléculaire. Ces molécules possèdent un noyau (cycle bêta-lactame) qui est la partie efficace de la molécule. Des variations au niveau de la chaîne latérale naturelle ou greffée permettent de modifier les propriétés de la molécule antibiotique.

Serratia marcescens

Serratia marcescens est une espèce de bactérie, de bacille à Gram négatif de la famille des Enterobacteriaceae. Un agent pathogène humain, S. marcescens est impliqué dans des infections nosocomiales, en particulier des bactériémies dans des voies veineuses centrales, des infections urinaires et des infections de plaies. On le trouve couramment dans les voies respiratoires et urinaires d'adultes hospitalisés et dans le système gastro-intestinal des enfants.
