A gyrokinetic model for the plasma periphery of tokamak devices

Paolo Ricci, Rogério Manuel Cabete De Jesus Jorge, Baptiste Jimmy Frei

A gyrokinetic model is presented that can properly describe large and small amplitude electromagnetic fluctuations occurring on scale lengths ranging from the electron Larmor radius to the equilibrium perpendicular pressure gradient scale length, and the a ...

Nonlinear Gyrokinetic Coulomb Collision Operator

Paolo Ricci, Rogério Manuel Cabete De Jesus Jorge, Baptiste Jimmy Frei

A gyrokinetic Coulomb collision operator is derived, which is particularly useful to describe the plasma dynamics at the periphery region of magnetic confinement fusion devices. The derived operator is able to describe collisions occurring in distribution ...

Hybrid guiding-centre/full-orbit simulations in non-axisymmetric magnetic geometry exploiting general criterion for guiding-centre accuracy

Jonathan Graves, Wilfred Anthony Cooper, David Pfefferlé

To identify under what conditions guiding-centre or full-orbit tracing should be used, an estimation of the spatial variation of the magnetic field is proposed, not only taking into account gradient and curvature terms but also parallel currents and the lo ...

System size effects on gyrokinetic turbulence

Laurent Villard, Alberto Bottino, Sébastien Jolliet

The scaling of turbulence-driven heat transport with system size in magnetically confined plasmas is reexamined using first-principles based numerical simulations. Two very different numerical methods are applied to this problem, in order to resolve a long ...

Local and Global Eulerian Gyrokinetic Simulations of Microturbulence in Realistic Geometry with Applications to the TCV Tokamak

In magnetically confined fusion devices, the energy and particle transport is significantly larger than expected from purely collisional processes. This degraded confinement mostly results from small-scale turbulence and prevents from reaching self-sustain ...

Toroidal Universal Drift Instability: A Global Gyrokinetic Study

Laurent Villard, Jan Vaclavik, Stephan Brunner

An electron density gradient driven instability identified as the toroidal branch of the universal drift instability is studied using a global gyrokinetic model treating both electrons and ions fully nonadiabatically and valid at all orders in the ratio of ...
