Labor market risk shapes individuals' environmental attitudes and policy preferences

In an era of increasing economic precarity and labor market polarization, meaningful efforts to mitigate climate challenges face a fundamental political challenge. We examine how individuals' long-term labor market risk shapes their environmental attitudes and support for green policies. We argue that long-term labor market risk is expected to reduce environmental concern amongst those affected due to a deprioritization of problems with high levels of uncertainty and that require deep reforms to be addresse

Generalized Scaling of Blue Metabolism in River Basins

River networks play a central role in regulating biogeochemical transformations at the catchment scale, yet a general scaling theory linking network structure to integrated metabolic function is still lacking. By positing the fundamental differences between blue (fluvial) and green (terrestrial) metabolisms in river basins, we focus on the former and, inspired by allometric scaling in biology, we treat river networks as model organisms whose effective body size is given by the volume of water stored within

Quantifying uncertainty in agricultural water sustainability indicators for soybean and wheat crops

Accurate water usage assessments are crucial for effective water management in agriculture given the significant impact it has on Earth’s water resources and its inherent variability across different models. We evaluate the uncertainty in water usage indicators for soybean and wheat crops at both global and local levels. The assessment focuses primarily on the water footprint and the water debt repayment time, considering both their green and blue water components. Based on the results obtained from four gl

How not to get lost in the quest to publish an Open Access article?

Upon attending this training, participants should have a clear understanding of what OA is; which are the most used models (Gold, Hybrid, Green...); what are the policies at national and institutional levels and how to comply with funders’ requirements; how to recognize a predatory journal.

On Sets Defining Few Ordinary Circles

Frank de Zeeuw

An ordinary circle of a set P of n points in the plane is defined as a circle that contains exactly three points of P. We show that if P is not contained in a line or a circle, then P spans at least ordinary circles. Moreover, we determine the exact minimu ...

Employment impacts of decarbonizing the economy: An alternative method between I-O analysis and CGE modelling

What are the impacts of an energy transition and green policies on employments? To answer this question, two approaches are widely used in the literature: Input-Output (IO) analysis and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models. While I-O analysis is a simple way to obtain a first approximation of the impacts, the method is linear, i.e. technical coefficients are assumed constant, and is thus not suitable in the case of large economic transition. On the other hand, CGE models accounts for substitution and

Dissociating target from flanker processing in visual crowding by EEG frequency-tagging

In visual crowding, neighboring elements deteriorate performance on a target. The neural mechanisms of crowding are largely unknown. We have recently shown that the N1 component of the EEG is suppressed during crowding. It is difficult to disentangle the processing of the target and the flankers because they are presented synchronously. Here, we used a frequency-tagging technique to analyze EEG responses separately for the flankers and target. Subjects discriminated the offset direction of a vernier that wa

From green to clean: a promising and sustainable approach towards environmental remediation

Jean-Paul Schwitzguebel

The use of green plants specifically chosen or tailored for the remediation of polluted soils and brownfields, the treatment of industrial wastewater or the removal of volatile organic compounds from indoor or outdoor air is becoming essential for sustainable development. Phytoremediation options are less expensive compared to physico-chemical approaches, even if the time scale required reaching the target end-points can be a limiting factor. Phytotechnologies are now offering efficient tools and environmen

2PFC™ Image Sensors: Better Image Quality at Lower Cost

A modification to the standard Bayer CFA and photodiode structure for CMOS image sensors is proposed, which we call 2PFC™, meaning “Two Pixel, Full Color”. The blue and red filters of the Bayer pattern are replaced by magenta filters. Under each magenta fi ...

Efficient scattering calculations in complex backgrounds

The utilization of the Green's tensor associated with a complex optical background (surface, cavity or stratified medium) leads to a dramatic reduction of the computation effort associated with scattering calculations in that background. This approach is illustrated with examples where a mere change of the background Green's tenser makes possible the investigation of completely different physical situations. Two different discretization approaches are compared and similarities between the Green's tensor tec

Prédiction et compréhension de la densification des poudres commerciales d'alumine et de fer grâce à une approche par réseau de neurones artificiels

Violaine Héliett Guerin

The influence of the properties of commercial powders on the densification during their packing, compaction and sintering process is still not understood in detail. With regard to the sintering process, neither the well-known sintering equation for the first sintering step nor the relation between the density and grain size at the final sintering step can describe the influence of powder characteristics on its densification behaviour. For improving the sintered density of a ceramic powder, it is known to be

A Novel Scheduler For a Low Delay Service Within Best-Effort

Jean-Yves Le Boudec, Patrick Thiran

We present a novel scheduling algorithm, Duplicate Scheduling with Deadlines (DSD). This algorithm implements the ABE service which allows interactive, adaptive applications, that mark their packets green, to receive a low bounded delay at the expense of maybe less throughput. ABE retains the best-effort context by protecting flows that value higher throughput more than low bounded delay, whose packets are marked blue. DSD optimises green traffic performance while satisfying the constraint that blue traffic

An Exact Method for Computing the Area Moments of Wavelet and Spline Curves

Michaël Unser, Thierry Blu, Mathews Jacob

We present a method for the exact computation of the moments of a region bounded by a curve represented by a scaling function or wavelet basis. Using Green's Theorem, we show that the computation of the area moments is equivalent to applying a suitable multidimensional filter on the coefficients of the curve and thereafter computing a scalar product. The multidimensional filter coefficients are precomputed exactly as the solution of a two-scale relation. To demonstrate the performance improvement of the new

Accurate solution of the volume integral equation for high-permittivity scatterers

We present a formalism based on the method of moment to solve the volume integral equation using tetrahedral (3-D) and triangular (2-D) elements. We introduce a regularization scheme to handle the strong singularity of the Green's tensor. This regularization scheme is extended to neighboring elements, which dramatically improves the accuracy and the convergence of the technique. Scattering by high-permittivity scatterers, like semiconductors, can be accurately computed. Furthermore, plasmon-polariton resona

Using Green's theorem, we show that the computation of the area moments is equivalent to applying a suitable multidimensional filter on the coefficients of the curve and thereafter computing a scalar product. We compare this algorithm with existing methods such as pixel-based approaches and approximation of the region by a polygon.

The Asymmetric Best-Effort Service

Jean-Yves Le Boudec, Patrick Thiran

We present Asymmetric Best-Effort, a novel service to provide a throughput versus delay jitter differentiated service for IP packets. With this service, every best effort packet is marked as either green or blue. Green packets, typically sent by real-time applications such as interactive audio, receive more losses during bouts of congestion than blue ones. In return, they receive less delay jitter. Both green and blue services are best-effort. The incentive to choose one or other is based on the nature

The Alternative Best-Effort Service

Jean-Yves Le Boudec, Patrick Thiran

Alternative Best-Effort (ABE) is a novel service for IP networks which offers applications the choice between receiving a lower end-to-end delay and receiving more overall throughput. Every best effort packet is marked as either green or blue. Green packets receive a low, bounded queueing delay. To ensure blue packets do not suffer as a result, green flows receive less throughput during bouts of congestion. The unique combination of lower delay with reduced throughput for green makes it different from recen
