Electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulation of drift wave turbulence in ADITYA-U with collisions

In this work, we extend our previous studies (Singh et al 2023, Nucl. Fusion 63, 086029; Singh et al 2024, Nucl. Fusion 64, 106005) by performing global δf electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations including collisions using the ORB5 particle-in-cell (PIC) code, spanning the plasma from magnetic axis to separatrix. The analysis focuses on ion temperature gradient (ITG) and trapped electron mode (TEM) turbulence in both linear and nonlinear regimes for experimentally relevant profiles and parameters of the ADI

Effect of negative triangularity on scrape-off layer plasma turbulence in double-null L-mode plasmas

The effects of negative triangularity (NT) on boundary plasma turbulence in double-null (DN) configurations are investigated using global, nonlinear, three-dimensional, flux-driven two-fluid simulations. Negative triangularity plasmas exhibit suppressed interchange-driven instabilities, resulting in enhanced confinement and lower fluctuation levels compared with positive triangularity (PT) plasmas. This reduction in interchange instability is associated with the weakening of curvature effects in the unfavou

Investigation of finite aspect ratio effects in axisymmetric magnetic equilibria with toroidal rotation and pressure anisotropy

The inverse equilibrium formulation and numerical code described in [L.L. Lao Phys. Fluids 24, 1431–1440 (1981)] are extended in a new `exact' fixed boundary equilibrium code that accounts for plasma toroidal rotation and pressure anisotropy. The formulation precisely captures deviations from an inverse aspect ratio

Nonreciprocity and High-Frequency Dynamics in Curved and Chiral Superconducting and Ferromagnetic Nanostructures

Lifting nanodevices from planar to three-dimensional architectures enables new functionalities by breaking symmetries and increasing device density. Two promising material classes for beyond-CMOS nanoscale technologies are superconductors and ferromagnets. Superconductors exhibit macroscopic quantum coherence, enabling dissipationless currents and making them attractive for ultrasensitive sensors and quantum computing. In ferromagnets, low-energy spin excitations, known as spin waves or magnons, propagate w

Study of kinetic effects on MHD instabilities in cylindrical geometry using a spectral hybrid kinetic-MHD code

Stephan Brunner

Machine-scale instabilities in fusion devices are commonly described using magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), however kinetic effects can significantly affect MHD instabilities through kinetic compression and wave-particle interaction. We propose a new code that solves the drift-kinetic-MHD equations using a spectral method, formulated using a Case-Van Kampen approach (N. G. Van Kampen, Physica 21 , 949 (1955)). The eigenvectors of the standardised eigenvalue problem are composed of the perpendicular MHD-like disp

First observations of ion cyclotron emission in the TCV tokamak

Basil Duval

The first observations of ion cyclotron emission (ICE) in the TCV tokamak are reported. The measured ICE frequency closely follows the deuterium ion cyclotron frequency at the magnetic axis, with temporal variations consistent with equilibrium evolution and associated shifts of the magnetic axis. Core ICE is observed primarily during phases with combined electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and neutral beam injection (NBI). In most discharges the second harmonic dominates, while in others higher harm

Near-resonant nuclear spin detection with megahertz mechanical resonators

Mechanical resonators operating in the megahertz range have become a versatile platform for fundamental and applied quantum research. Their exceptional properties, such as low mass and high quality factor, make them also appealing for force sensing experiments. In this work, we propose a method for detecting, and ultimately controlling, nuclear spins by coupling them to megahertz resonators via a magnetic field gradient. Dynamical backaction between the sensor and an ensemble of N nuclear spins produces a s

ELM suppression and confinement in negativetriangularity with stronger shaping in ASDEXUpgrade

Recent experiments conducted during the 2025 campaign in ASDEX Upgrade have pushed the limits of negative triangularity shaping, achieving top triangularity values of δ top ∼-0.55 while keeping bottom triangularity around 0 in diverted plasmas. Guided by ideal-MHD stability calculations using the linear MHD BALOO solver and supported by TCV results, these experiments have demonstrated a transition to an edge that is more stable against peeling-ballooning modes, leading to ELM-free pl

The physics of ballooning-limited ELM-free regimes in EUROfusion tokamaks

The development of operational scenarios without large Type-I ELMs is of utmost importance for the stable operation and longevity of future tokamaks. The EUROfusion tokamak exploitation program has therefore made the understanding of ELM-free regimes a major topic of exploration across all its contributing devices (ASDEX Upgrade, JET, MAST-Upgrade, TCV, and WEST). An integrated program to investigate a range of Type-I ELM-free regimes has been developed covering the enhanced D-alpha (EDA), magnetic perturba

On the interplay between plasma triangularity and micro-tearing turbulence

Stefano Coda

In this work, we study the interplay between triangularity and micro-tearing turbulence using linear and nonlinear flux tube GENE simulations. We consider scenarios with negative and positive triangularity plasma shaping taken from existing tokamaks (TCV, DIII-D, MAST-U and SMART) and EU-DEMO. The study of all these tokamaks reveals a coherent picture. Negative triangularity geometry is more susceptible to micro-tearing modes (MTM), which, when present, make transport much worse than in positive triangulari

First global simulations of plasma turbulence in a stellarator with an island divertor

We present the results of 3D, flux-driven, global, two-fluid electrostatic turbulence simulations in a 5-field period stellarator with an island divertor. The numerical simulations are carried out with the GBS code, which solves the two-fluid drift-reduced Braginskii equations and has been extended recently to simulate plasma turbulence in non-axisymmetric magnetic equilibria. The vacuum magnetic field used in the simulations is carefully constructed using Dommaschk potentials in order to describe a configu

Modelling of non-linear edge harmonic oscillations and the effect of non-axisymmetric magnetic coils

Wilfred Anthony Cooper

Quiescent H-mode (QH-mode) operation is highly desirable relative to the well known H- mode operation because it allows for high energy density in the core as well as potentially im- proved confinement of energy and particles. A feature of QH-mode is that the Edge Localized Mode (ELM) instabilities are replaced with continuous Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHO) [1]. Control and reproduction of robust QH-mode regimes could be crucial for future fusion opera- tion. In some cases it may be useful to modify the m

Magneto-ballistic transport in GaN nanowires

The ballistic filtering property of nanoscale crosses was used to investigate the effect of perpendicular magnetic fields on the ballistic transport of electrons on wide band-gap GaN heterostructures. The straight scattering-less trajectory of electrons was modified by a perpendicular magnetic field which produced a strong non-linear behavior in the measured output voltage of the ballistic filters and allowed the observation of semi-classical and quantum effects, such as quenching of the Hall resistance and

The impact of the Boussinesq approximation on plasma turbulence in the scrape-off layer

Plasma turbulence in the tokamak scrape-off layer (SOL) region, where magnetic field lines are open and intersect the reactor inner walls, determines the heat loads on the limiter or divertor targets. This is one of the most crucial issues on the way towards a fusion reactor. Since SOL plasma is colder compared to the tokamak core, it is reasonable to use a fluid approximation to describe its dynamics. In particular the drift-reduced Braginskii equations are chosen to study the SOL plasma turbulence. To fur
