Fast packet switching

In telecommunications, fast packet switching is a variant of packet switching that increases the throughput by eliminating overhead associated with flow control and error correction functions, which are either offloaded to upper layer networking protocols or removed altogether. ATM and Frame Relay are two major implementations of fast packet switching.

RVC: a Multi-Decoder CAL Composer tool

Marco Mattavelli

The Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) framework is a recent ISO standard aiming at providing a unified specification of MPEG video technology in the form of a library of components. The word “reconfigurable” evokes run-time instantiation of different decoders starting from an on-the-fly analysis of the input bitstream. In this paper we move a first step towards the definition of systematic procedures that, based on the MPEG RVC specification formalism, are able to produce multi-decoder platforms, capable of

Fast Dimensioning of Packet-Switched All-Optical Networks

Christian Gaumier

This paper addresses the basic concepts of the packet switching in the optical domain and describes an analytical approach to evaluate the end-to-end performance of networks employing slotted (fixed length) optical packets. Thus, for a given topology and traffic matrix, the end-to-end cell loss ratio is analytically computed assuming an uncorrelated traffic. A network dimensioning method relying on this approach is also presented.

Performance analysis of packet switched all-optical networks

Christian Gaumier

All-optical packet switching has been intensively investigated in recent years as an alternative to static, crossconnect based networks. Several switch architectures have been proposed, all of them using buffers made of fibre delay lines. The paper addresses the basic concepts of packet switching in the optical domain and describes an analytical approach to evaluate the end-to-end performance of networks employing slotted (fixed length) optical packets. Thus, for a given topology and traffic matrix, the end

Michael Graetzel

Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Michael Graetzel, PhD, directs there the Laboratory of Photonics and Interfaces. He pioneered research on energy and electron transfer reactions in mesoscopic systems and their use to generate electricity and fuels from sunlight. He invented mesoscopic injection solar cells, one key embodiment of which is the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC). DSCs are meanwhile commercially produced at the multi-MW-scale and created a number of new applications in particular as lightweight power supplies for portable electronic devices and in building integrated photovoltaics. They engendered perovskite solar cells (PSCs) which turned into the most exciting break-through in the history of photovoltaics. He received a number of prestigious awards, of which the most recent ones include the RusNANO Prize, the Zewail Prize in Molecular Science, the Global Energy Prize, the Millennium Technology Grand Prize, the Marcel Benoist Prize, the King Faisal International Science Prize, the Einstein World Award of Science and the Balzan Prize. He is a Fellow of several learned societies and holds eleven honorary doctor’s degrees from European and Asian Universities. His over 1500 publications have received some 220’000 citations with an h-factor of 218 (SI-Web of Science) demonstrating the strong impact of his scientific work.
