Existing inverter designs are not well-suited for use with high-speed generators due to the IGBTs used as switching elements, which are not fast enough. SiC FETs offer a lower switching time compared to IGBTs, which is key to working with high-frequency machines. However, getting a faster inverter is not as simple as replacing IGBTs with SiC FETs. The system must be adapted, and every component from the gate drivers to the control circuitry, including the sensing elements and power supply must be evaluated

Asymmetric cell division is an evolutionarily conserved process that gives rise to daughter cells with different fates. In one-cell stage C. elegans embryos, this process is accompanied by asymmetric spindle positioning, which is regulated by anterior-post ...

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell systems (SOFC) are developed for their electrical efficiency and versatility. Versatility stems from their tolerance towards CO and CH4, which allows for the use of various reformed fuels. Efficiency results from the direct conversion of the chemical energy of fuels into electricity and the availability of high temperature heat for internal steam reforming. In this study, short SOFC stacks provided by SOFCpower were tested under methane steam reforming conditions. The stacks were coupl

The paper presents the general scheme and the relevant implementation of a Maximum Efficiency Point Tracking (MEPT) system for a Small Hydro Power (SHP) plant equipped with a variable-speed generator. This last consists of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and a power electronic converter that independently controls both the rotor speed and the generator power factor. The MEPT is designed to be used with a propeller turbine with adjustable runner blade angle and it is coupled with the headwater level

This paper presents a novel development method for interactive and distributed applications. The benefit that this method provides is that the design gives clear guidance towards the implementation. The method is based on three main elements: a concept of synchronous active objects that is closely related to that found in CSP; the Java environment; and a selection of the diagrams defined by UML. This approach alleviates many of the most serious problems that are encountered when using GUI builders, which hi

Precise positioning over a long stroke is required in various fields. Important advances in the field of electromagnetic motors, piezoelectric actuators and bearing technology allow nanometric and sub-arc-second resolution for linear or rotary actuators, respectively. Alas, these devices are rather complex, therefore expensive, and require sophisticated assembly techniques for the delicate components. Furthermore, their operation range is often limited to some fractions of a millimeter or a couple of degree

Artificial respirators use an electric source of energy to supply the various active components which control the airflow. A portable or autonomous respirator (emergency, war, ambulance, etc), needs a battery or an energy container to be supplied with great reliability. This paper describes an industrial project that uses only pneumatic energy to supply all the electronic components. Furthermore, the generator used for the electric supply regulates the airflow by controlling its phase currents

In the order to produce energy for the large amount of people still currently out of the national girds, different possibilities exist. For practical and economic reasons, the most popular one is the use of Diesel engines coupled with generator sets. Petrol reserves being not infinite, renewable solutions have to be found to insure a sustainable development of the poorest areas in the world. One of those could be the gasification of biomass. The latter has two advantages: Biomass is a renewable energy sourc

The brushless DC motors are normally built with rotor mounted PMs, which create the necessary back EMF voltage to produce a mechanical power. The shape of this back-EMF voltage is very important compared to the phase voltage supply one. Indeed, the electromechanical power is obtained by the product of the back-EMF and the phase current. Two possibilities are normally used to make the choice of the electronic supply. If the back-EMF is trapezoidal, the supply will be "block" (120 degrees, two-phase one mode)

A digital lock-in amplifier has been used to perform V-I time series acquisition when transport currents with amplitude above Ic are driven through Bi-2223 tapes. The current waveform is triangular, sinusoidal or with arbitrary shape, and is applied for several consecutive cycles. The generator frequencies are selected to be 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 10 and 59 Hz. The amplitude of the applied current is varied from 2 to 20 times the value of Ic. The invariance of the V-I curves during several consecutive cycles an

Hybrid solar thermal power plants (with parabolic trough type of solar collectors) featuring gas burners and Rankine steam cycles have been successfully demonstrated by California's Solar Electric Generating System (SEGS). This system has been proven to be one of the most efficient and economical schemes to convert solar energy into electricity. Recent technological progress opens interesting prospects for advanced cycle concepts: a) the ISCCS (Integrated Solar Combined Cycle System) that integrates the par

Integrated solar combined cycle systems (ISCCS) represent, both economically and energetically, a promising alternative for the conversion of solar energy while offering a guarantee of a minimum power supply independant of the level of solar radiation. Their performances are however strongly dependant on the intensity of the solar input. The approach proposed in this paper allows, from the characteristics of the turbines (gas turbines and steam turbines) and of the solar field, to rationalize the choice of

A program environment is presented that enables a co-operative design of high-technology products demanding interdisciplinary computer simulations for their optimisation. The system includes a multi-site, multi-machine, distributed data manager accessible by a data monitor. A client-server concept supports the user of massively parallel machines. The exchange of data between different executable scientific application modules is performed through the data base. Special modules to define the geometry, to dec

In this paper, an interactive tool is proposed for the visualization, editing and manipulation of multiple track sequences. A sequence is associated with an articulated figure and can integrate different motion generators such as walking, inverse kinematics, and key framing within a unified framework. The TRACK system provides a large set of tools for track space manipulations and Cartesian space corrections. This approach allows an incremental refinement design combining information and constraints from bo

During plasma excitation by high power Alfven waves at TCA, signals at harmonics of the generator frequency are observed in the plasma scrape-off layer. In this paper, experimental investigations of the sheath effect and the excitation efficiency and dispersion properties of the harmonics are reported. The results indicate that the harmonics arise, either directly or indirectly, through the driven Alfven waves and not through the sheath effect at the exciting antenna. The RF ion saturation current is observ
