Turbulence Saturation Via Fine-scale Profile Shearing in Fusion Plasmas

Microturbulence can produce stationary fine-scale radial corrugations on the plasma density and temperature gradients in magnetic confinement fusion devices. We study the effect of these corrugations, focusing on electron temperature gradient (ETG) transport in the tokamak pedestal, and report three main findings. 1) In the presence of a sinusoidal background temperature gradient corrugation, each ETG mode splits into three distinct eigenvalues, with one being the original, one being more unstable and one b

Simulation of plasma turbulence in the boundary of magnetic fusion devices with a realistic wall geometry

The performance of a tokamak strongly depends on the turbulent dynamics in the plasma boundary region, which separates the core plasma from the vessel's plasma facing components. In fact, the boundary region regulates the refueling of the main plasma as well as its impurity contamination, while simultaneously determining the peak particle and heat fluxes impinging on material surfaces. Improving the understanding of the boundary region is therefore of critical interest to interpret existing experiments and

Diagnostics for characterization of neutral beams parameters at TCV

Basil Duval, Holger Reimerdes

Injection of high-energy neutral beams (NBIs) of hydrogen isotopes is a well-established method for plasma heating, current drive, and diagnosis of magnetic confinement fusion devices, including tokamaks, stellarators and open systems. NBI diagnostics provide essential information for operation, protection, characterization, and optimization of neutral beams, both on test facilities and during plasma experiments. The TCV tokamak is equipped with three neutral beam injectors (NBIs) — two for heating and one

MHD, disruptions and control physics: Chapter 4 of the special issue: on the path to tokamak burning plasma operation

Olivier Sauter, Timothy Goodman, Holger Reimerdes

In this chapter, we review the progress in MHD stability, disruptions and control in magnetic fusion research that has occurred over the past (more than) one and a half decades since the publication by Hender et al in 2007 on the same topic as part of the update of ITER Physics Basis. During this period, remarkable progress has been achieved in the understanding of the basic physics and overall control of MHD instabilities through a wide spectrum of dedicated experiments, theory and modeling. The sawtooth a

Surfaces with Klein bottle topology occur in fusion reactor fields

Magnetic confinement fusion devices, such as tokamaks and stellarators, are designed such that magnetic field lines lie in magnetic surfaces that form a foliation of nested tori. The Poincaré–Hopf index theorem implies that only surfaces with Euler characteristic χ=0 allow for vector fields that lie tangent to the surface and are smooth and nowhere-vanishing. It is often implicitly assumed that magnetic surfaces are always toroidal. In this paper, we show that surfaces with the topology of a Klein bottle (t

Experimental evidence for mass-independent fractionation of even-mass mercury isotopes related to the nuclear volume effect

Investigating stable mercury (Hg) isotope ratios is a novel approach for tracing biogeochemical transformations of this global pollutant in environmental systems. The Hg isotope system is unique in the sense that it encompasses not only mass-dependent (MDF) but also multiple types of mass-independent fractionation (MIF) in both experimental and natural systems. One of the processes causing MIF for heavy elements such as Hg is the nuclear volume effect (NVE) which occurs during kinetic and equilibrium reacti

Spectroscopic characterisation of H2 and D2 helicon plasmas generated by a resonant antenna for neutral beam applications in fusion

Basil Duval, Ivo Furno, Alan Howling, Alexander Karpushov, Philippe Frédérique Bruno Guittienne, Rémy Jacquier, Riccardo Agnello, Gennady Plyushchev, Kevin Henricus Annemarie Verhaegh, Claudio Marini

A new generation of neutral beam systems will be required in future fusion reactors, such as DEMO, able to deliver high power (up to 50 MW) with high (800 keV or higher) neutral energy. Only negative ion beams may be able to attain this performance, which ...

Laurent Villard, Stephan Brunner, Emmanuel Lanti, Trach-Minh Tran, Noé Thomas Elie Ohana, Claudio Gheller

With the aim of enabling state-of-the-art gyrokinetic PIC codes to benefit from the performance of recent multithreaded devices, we developed an application from a platform called the "PIC-engine" [1, 2, 3] embedding simplified basic features of the PIC me ...

Hierarchical Model Predictive Control in Fusion Reactors

Stefano Coda, Jean-Marc Moret, Hoang Bao Le

Nuclear fusion still has to pass several milestones on its way to successful energy production, one of them being successful plasma stabilization. The present article presents an innovative control implementation related to plasma control for the generatio ...

Recent numerical developments in scrape-off-layer global fluid simulations using the GBS code

Turbulence in the scrape-off-layer (SOL) of magnetic fusion devices is one of the most outstanding issues in magnetic fusion. This open fied lines region determines the boundary condition of the core plasma and controls the plasma refueling, heat losses and impurity dynamics, therefore governing the fusion power output of the entire device. In this work, we present the global fluid code GBS [Ricci et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 54, 124047, 2012]. It employs a 5 field drift-reduced Braginskii model for

Dealing with electromagnetic fields, in particular current and related magnetic fields, yields "natural" physical vector relations in 3-D. However, when it comes to choosing local coordinate systems, the "usual" right-handed systems are not necessarily the ...

Edge Localized Mode Control in TCV

Convective cells and blob control in a simple magnetized torus

Ambrogio Fasoli, Ivo Furno

In view of controlling wall and divertor heat loads in magnetic fusion devices, we investigate the possibility of creating convective cells by means of biased electrodes for turbulence and blob control in the simple magnetized toroidal plasmas of TORPEX. A two-dimensional array of 24 electrodes is installed on a metal limiter to test different biasing schemes. This allows influencing significantly the frequency of the dominant mode as well as radial and vertical velocities of blobs. Detailed measurements al
