Centralization, the concentration of control or trust in a small number of organizations, is the dominant organizing principle of modern AI. While it has powered rapid progress, centralization also means that control over how AI systems are trained, deployed, and coordinated rests with few parties. This thesis argues that decentralized AI is not only possible but practical, and presents eight contributions across three frontiers of modern AI: training on distributed data, deploying trustworthy autonomous ag

The International Commission on Illumination recently issued a position statement advocating for proper light at proper time, specifically recommending a melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance of 250 lx at eye level during daytime. However, the statement also cautions that avoiding glare from windows requires ‘advanced lighting design guidance’, implying a conflict between achieving healthy lighting and managing daylight-induced glare. This study examines this potential conflict. Through theoretical anal

Laser frequency combs (LFCs) are a promising technology for wavelength calibration of astronomical high-resolution spectrographs requiring utmost accuracy and stability, since they directly translate the fundamental SI time standard from the radio frequency regime to optical frequencies. However, they have so far seen limited use in practice, due to their complexity, incomplete wavelength coverage, but also the challenges in the data analysis they imply. Here, we present a detailed test of a 34 GHz electro-

Time, though ubiquitous in our daily experience, is a physical quantity not very well understood. It lies at the crux of efforts to unify the physical paradigms, being regarded as a constant background in some paradigms such as Newtonian mechanics or quantum mechanics, while completely internal to the objects in other paradigms such as general relativity. In quantum mechanics, specifically, the inability to find an operator for time as for spatial positions indicates the impossibility to find an observable

Pseudo-heterodyne scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (sSNOM) is applied in the mid-infrared region to detect the chemical composition of biomolecules on the nanoscale. However, the application of sSNOM in molecular biology has been limited to static images in air. Recently, bottom illumination sSNOM (BI-sSNOM) was developed for operation in water. Yet, the scan rate of sSNOM remains a bottleneck to record protein structural changes in aqueous solution on the seconds time scale. We design

A search for the charmless baryonic decay B+→Λ¯pp¯p is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1. The branching fraction for this decay is measured for the first time relative to that of the topologically similar decay B+→J/ψK+, with J/ψ→Λ¯pK-. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B+→Λ¯pp¯p)=(2.15±0.35±0.12±0.28)×10-7, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third arises from

Crystallization is a fundamental process in biomineralization, yet its complexity increases significantly in non-classical pathways of nucleation and growth, where numerous intermediates exist between free ions in solution and the final crystalline phase. Characterization of such intermediates can be delicate as some processes can proceed very fast, inducing a short temporal window for their characterization. The problem is particularly true for the so-called prenucleation species, for which this difficulty

A key feature of resorcin[4]arene cavitands is their ability to switch between a closed/contracted (Vase) and an open/expanded (Kite) conformation. The mechanism and dynamics of this interconversion remains, however, elusive. In the present study, the Vase ...

Robustness of extracted embeddings in cross-database scenarios is one of the main challenges in text-independent speaker verification (SV) systems. In this paper, we investigate this robustness via performing structural cross-database experiments with or without additive noise. This noise can be added from the seen set, where the noise type is similar to the noise which is used in data augmentation for training the SV model, or unseen set, where distribution of additive noise in train and evaluation sets ar

Biological membranes are highly dynamic and complex lipid bilayers, responsible for the fate of living cells. To achieve this function, the hydrating environment is crucial. However, membrane imaging typically neglects water, focusing on the insertion of p ...

Turkish Discourse Bank (TDB) is a 400K subcorpus of METU Corpus (Say et al., 002) annotated for discourse relations (Zeyrek et al., 2008; Zeyrek et al., 2009; Zeyrek et al., 2010). TDB was annotated using DATT, an annotation tool created for the sole purpose of annotating discourse relations in Turkish (Aktaş et al, 2010). METU TDB Browser (Şirin et al, 2012) is a tool developed for browsing the annotated discourse relations in the TDB. In this study we describe these tools that were created for annotating

An experimental study of a nanosecond pulsed regime in a THz gyrotron oscillator operating in a self-consistent Q-switch regime has been carried out. The gyrotron is operated in the TE7,2 transverse mode radiating at a frequency of 260.5 GHz. The 5 W nanos ...

Dealing with electromagnetic fields, in particular current and related magnetic fields, yields "natural" physical vector relations in 3-D. However, when it comes to choosing local coordinate systems, the "usual" right-handed systems are not necessarily the ...

Basic wave-particle interaction dynamics from linear to chaotic regimes is experimentally studied on a frequency tunable gyrotron generating THz radiation in continuous mode (200W) at 263GHz which will be used for dynamic nuclear polarization nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy applications. In the studied system, the nonlinear dynamics associated to the waveparticle interaction is dominated by longitudinal mode competition of a given transverse TEm;p cavity-mode. This study covers a wide range of contr

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy offers many ways to investigate dynamic properties of molecules. A wide variety of experimental techniques can probe molecular dynamics on time scales that range from 10-12 to 103 seconds. Many lines of evidenc ...
