Thermal conductivity (κ) plays an essential role in functional devices. It is advantageous to design materials where one can tune κ in a wide range according to its function: single-crystals and nanowires of anatase polymorph of titanium dioxide, broadly u ...

In recent years, new methods have been developed to synthesize complex porous and micro-structured geometry in a variety of ways. In this work, we take these approaches one step further and present these methods as an efficacious design paradigm. Specifically, complex micro-structure geometry can be synthesized while optimizing certain properties such as maximal heat exchange in heat exchangers, or minimal weight under stress specifications. By being able to adjust the geometry, the topology and/or the mate

Energy harvesting from thermal energy has been widely exploited to achieve energy savings and clean technologies. In this research, a new cost-effective and environment-friendly solution is proposed for the growing individual energy needs thanks to the ene ...

Spin caloritronics refers to research efforts in spintronics when a heat current plays a role. In this review, we start out by reviewing the predictions that can be drawn from the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. This serves as a conceptual framework in which to analyze the interplay of charge, spin and heat transport. This formalism predicts tensorial relations between vectorial quantities such as currents and gradients of chemical potentials or of temperature. Transverse effects such as the Nerns

Integrally cast turbine airfoils with wall-integrated cooling cavities are greatly applicable in modern turbines providing enhanced heat exchange capabilities compared to conventional cooling passages. In such arrangements, narrow impingement channels can be formed where the generated crossflow is an important design parameter for the achievement of the desired cooling efficiency. In this study, a regulation of the generated crossflow for a narrow impingement channel consisting of a single row of five inlin

The invention relates to titanium oxide aerogels, in particular to titanium oxide binary or ternary (e.g. titanium oxide-carbon) aerogel monoliths possessing ordered meso- and macroporosity. The porous scaffold can be made with or without addition of binde ...

This project is focused on atomic layer deposition of aluminium oxide to fabricate suspended microchannel resonators. Few examples of the applications of such devices are blood analysis to detect cancerous cells or device cooling directly on the chip. The main objective is to simplify the current fabrication process implemented in GR-LVT group, which is complicated and long. In autumn 2015, a previous student worked on this project, using parylene C as structural material for the microfluidic channels. The

This review highlights the major advantages and challenges of mechanically driven heat pumps and refrigeration systems with focus on multi-temperature applications. Different design strategies are presented, including cycles with multi-stage compressors, e ...

The hybrid halide perovskites, the very performant compounds in photovoltaic applications, possess large Seebeck coefficient and low thermal conductivity, making them potentially interesting high figure of merit (ZT) materials. For this purpose, one needs ...

Extensive work on flow boiling in microchannels with the aim of cooling of electronics has been undertaken in the past 15 to 20 years. With this knowledge in hand, the next step is to develop detailed, accurate and validated simulation codes for steady-state and transient operations of (i) the entire thermal package (micro-channel evaporator, its inlet and outlet ports, the thermal interface material and the electronic chip), (ii) the flow distribution to multiple chips to be cooled in parallel, and (ii) th

The analysis of cooling of a binary high T-c superconductor (HTS) 20 kA current lead (CL) operating between 4.5 and 300 K is carried out. We assume that the HTS module is conduction cooled, whereas the cold end of the copper heat exchanger (HEX) is immerse ...

The identification of a suitable combined electricity production cycle depends on the heating and cooling requirements of the respective industrial process. Due to the large number of options an exhaustive enumeration of all the possibilities is not realistic. An optimisation based approach has to be adopted; it should be multi-objective and non-linear. The Methodology proposed is systematically generating a list of competing options, it follows the logic: - Analyse – Identifying heating and cooling require
