Projected distances for multi-parameter persistence modules

Relying on sheaf theory, we introduce the notions of projected barcodes and projected distances for multi-parameter persistence modules. Projected barcodes are defined as derived pushforward of persistence modules onto ℝ . Projected distances come in two flavors: the integral sheaf metrics (ISM) and the sliced convolution distances (SCD). We conduct a systematic study of the stability of projected barcodes and show that the fibered barcode is a particular instance of projected barcodes. We prove that the IS

Overdamped limits for Langevin dynamics with position-dependent coefficients via L2-hypocoercivity

This note provides a simple derivation of the overdamped approximation for kinetic (or underdamped) equilibrium Langevin dynamics, in cases where certain coefficients depend on the position variable. The equivalent small-mass limit of these dynamics, known as the Kramers–Smoluchowski approximation, in the case of a state-dependent friction coefficient, has been previously studied by a variety of approaches. Our new approach uses hypocoercivity estimates, which may be of interest in their own right, and lead

Variation of the stellar initial mass function in semi-analytical models: III. Testing the cosmic-ray regulated integrated galaxy-wide initial mass function

Context. In our previous work, we derived the CR-IGIMF, which is a new scenario for a variable stellar initial mass function (IMF) that combines numerical results on the role played by cosmic rays (CR) in setting the thermal state of star-forming gas with the analytical approach of the integrated galaxy-wide IMF (IGIMF). Aims. In this work, we study the implications of this scenario for the properties of local early-type galaxies (ETG) as inferred from dynamical, photometric, and spectroscopic studies. Meth

Fluorescence Imaging For Ultrafiltration Of Individual Nanoparticles From A Colloidal Solution In Track Membranes

We have used fluorescence nanoscopy for direct imaging of adsorption of individual colloidal quantum dots of diameter similar to 10 nm (spherical core/shell CdSeS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals, functionalized by organic oleic acid ligands) in nanopores of ...

Current-induced domain wall motion in nanoscale ferromagnetic elements

The manipulation of a magnetic domain wall (DW) by a spin polarized current in ferromagnetic nanowires has attracted tremendous interest during the last years due to fundamental questions in the fields of spin dependent transport phenomena and magnetization dynamics but also due to promising applications, such as DW based magnetic memory concepts and logic devices. We comprehensively review recent developments in the field of geometrically confined domain walls and in particular current induced DW dynamics.

Scaling of double and single stranded DNA

Giovanni Dietler

Long double stranded DNA (DsDNA) and single stranded DNA (ssDNA) molecules were studied by direct imaging with the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) in order to determine their scaling properties, exponents, distributions and persistence length in the frame work of the theory of polymer physics and at the single molecule level. The effects of the topology on the statistical properties were investigated by considering linear, circular and knotted DNA molecules

Probabilistic Tagging of Unstructured Genealogical Records

In this paper we present a method of parsing unstructured textual records briefly describing a person and their direct relatives. The string

Stephanus, brother of Johannes Magnin, from Saillon' is a typical example of a record. We wish to annotate every term (word and symbol) in our records with a label which describes whether the term is a name (e.g.

Stephanus'), a place (e.g. Saillon'), or a relationship (e.g. brother'). We build upon work developed for the cleaning and standardization of names for re

Cells and tissue imaging with digital holographic microscopy

Christian Depeursinge, Tristan Colomb, Etienne Cuche, Frédéric Montfort

The aim of Optical Digital Holography, applied to cells and tissue imaging, is to provide an accurate 3D imaging of biologic materials, down to the microscopic scale. The method has been developed to yield a very precise determination of cells and tissues morphology. Targeted accuracies are in the sub-micron range and allow for the observation of very small movements band deformations, produced, in particular, by depolarization of excitable cells and their metabolic activities. Direct imaging of tissue stru
