Background: In 2021, the WHO reported that caesarean sections accounted for over 21% of births and could reach nearly one-third by 2030. Although essential when medically indicated, caesarean sections remain surgical procedures with potential long-term risks. Retrospective studies suggest that about 18% are performed due to dystocia, a complication characterized by prolonged labor and often linked to fetal malposition or cephalopelvic disproportion. Research has also shown that maternal lower-limb positioni

In 1958, Hans Gugelot and Helmut Müller-Kühn’s design for a wheeled television represented a shift in how television and cinematic spaces can be conceptualized, introducing mobility to a previously static entertainment furniture piece. This mobility has evolved into the ubiquitous screens of today, transforming entertainment consumption and fragmenting traditional collective spaces such as the Odeon-like cinema. As the enduring popularity of film festivals in Frankfurt am Main indicates a persistent demand

Flexible robotic endoscopy has the potential to reduce invasiveness and improve patient outcomes in ventric-ular neurosurgeries. Many promising technologies exist for navigating and interacting within such highly critical and constrained spaces as the brain. With objective assessment of surgical device safety and capabilities, a standardised method of evaluation could accelerate development. We present a soft-sensorised testbed of a 1: 1 scale lateral ventricle, capable of simulating procedures and measurin

A novel mechanical system, based on a new cable driven mechanical transmission, able to provide sufficient dexterity, stiffness, speed, precision and payload capacity to actuate multi-DOF micro-manipulators. Besides the possibility of being used in several articulated surgical instruments and robotic systems for surgery or other applications involving remote manipulation, it enables the design of a novel fully mechanical surgical instrument, which offer the advantages of: conventional laparoscopy (low cost,

There is a need for efficient and “off-the-shelf” grafts in urethral reconstructive surgery. Currently available surgical techniques require harvesting of grafts from autologous sites, with increased risk of surgical complications and added patient discomf ...

The ability of a large-scale Landscape Evolution Model (LEM) to simulate the soil surface morphological evolution as observed in a laboratory flume (1-m × 2-m surface area) was investigated. The soil surface was initially smooth, and was subjected to heterogeneous rainfall in an experiment designed to avoid rill formation. Low-cohesive fine sand was placed in the flume while the slope and relief height were 5 % and 20 cm, respectively. Non-uniform rainfall with an average intensity of 85 mm h -1 and a stand

Surgical sealants are widely used in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery essentially for hemostasis and sealing. Their adhesive properties have mainly been studied by clinical experiments. The objective of this study is to measure adhesion of the three main types of surgical sealant used in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery under normalized realistic conditions. The bulge-and-blister test was used to quantify adhesive performances of three types of surgical adhesives: cyanoacrylates, polyethylene glycol (

The present invention relates to a method, such as a surgical method for assisting a surgeon for placing screws in the spine using a robot attached to a passive structure. The present invention also related to a method, such as a surgical method for assist ...

Glaucoma is one of the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world and it usually occurs when the pressure inside the eyes gradually rises, permanently damaging the optic nerve. Medications and filtering surgery are two possible therapies available for patients suffering from this disease. In the same perspective, glaucoma drainage devices allowing a better outflow of the aqueous humor have been developed to address most of the problems present with the classic surgical techniques. However none of

Collision detection among virtual objects is one of the main concerns in virtual reality and computer graphics. Usually the methods developed for collision detection are for either very general cases or very specific applications. The first main goal of th ...

Thick-film materials are very advantageous for piezoresistive pressure and force sensors because of ease of processing, reliability and low cost. The standard substrate material used with thick-film technology for sensing is alumina, but its elastic modulus is high and its strength rather low. Steels offer better mechanical properties and permit assembly without an elastomer seal, which is required for pressure sensing in severe conditions. In order to use the steel as substrate, the standard firing tempera

We present a 3D geometric flow designed to evolve in Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Images(DT-MRI) along fiber tracts by measuring the diffusive similarity between voxels. Therefore we define a front propagation speed that is proportional to the similarity between the tensors lying on the surface and its neighbor in the propagation direction. The method is based on the assumption that successive voxels in a tract have similar diffusion properties. The front propagation is implemented using level set me
