Innovative and low cost continuous evacuation of sediment through the intake structure using multiple jets at the reservoir bottom

Anton Schleiss, Giovanni De Cesare, Jolanda Maria Isabella Jenzer Althaus

Reservoir sedimentation is worldwide a significant long term problem and requires in view of the current mitigation measures an alternative and more sustainable solution. This challenge motivated the present study with the purpose to develop an alternative efficient method to release sediment out of a reservoir. The concept is based on the release of sediment through the headrace tunnel and turbines whereby a special focus was set on the fine sediment in the area in front of the power intakes. Specific jet

Dynamic response of a rock block in a plunge pool due to asymmetrical impact of a high-velocity jet

Anton Schleiss, Erik Bollaert, Matteo Paolo Elia Antonio Federspiel

Flood release structures of high-head dams generate high-velocity plunging jets. These may scour the downstream rocky riverbed and even damage the dam foundation. Assessment of the scour evolution is essential to ensure the safety of the dam and appurtenant structures, as well as to guarantee the stability of its abutments. In the framework of a research project, near-prototype scaled experimental installation generating high-velocity jet impact in a plunge pool has been equipped with an artificial rock bloc

Effects Of The Swirl Velocity Of A Jet In Crossflow From Fan Assemblies Mounted On Lifting Surfaces

The penetration of a jet of fluid into a traversal moving stream is a basic configuration of a wide range of engineering applications, such as film cooling and V/STOL aircrafts. This investigation examines experimentally the effect of blowing ratio of fans in crossflow, and numerically, the effect of the swirl velocity of jets in crossflow, downstream of the injection hole. The experimental results indicated an agreement with typically straight jets in crossflow (no vorticity), illustrating that the trace o

Characterization of supersonic low pressure plasma jets with electrostatic probes

Christoph Hollenstein, Jean-Luc Dorier, Malko Gindrat

Measurement of key plasma jet properties, such as the Mach number, electron density and temperature, in a low pressure environment, were performed using double Langmuir probes and Mach probes. In particular, under-expanded jets are studied in detail by performing complete mappings of plasma jet properties at chamber pressures of 10 and 2 mbar. These results show that the measured physical properties are consistent with the jet flow phenomenology, such as the presence of periodic expansion and compression zo
