Railroad diagrams (also called “syntax diagrams”) are a common, intuitive visualization of grammars, but limited tooling and a lack of formal attention to their layout mostly confines them to hand-drawn documentation. We present the first formal treatment of railroad diagram layout along with a principled, practical implementation. We characterize the problem as compiling a diagram language (specifying conceptual components and how they connect and compose) to a layout language (specifying basic graphical s

Diagrams are rare and hard to work with in programming and theorem-proving environments. Existing diagramming systems do not meet the practical needs of interactive, exploratory use, such as keeping diagrams understandable as they grow in size with limited screen space, or as they evolve as the user steps through the program or proof. My research seeks to develop an approach—compositional diagramming—that meets these needs. Diagrams are formed of independent parts composed in systematic ways reflecting the

Panorama of the Battle of Murten is a 19th-century Swiss national treasure that is currently not accessible to the public. The DIAGRAM project [8] of the EPFL Laboratory for ExperimentalMuseology (eM+) focuses on digitising this painting and augmenting it with additional content. An ultra-high-resolution digital twin of the panorama was produced in the first stage of the project. The next phase will include enriching the obtained image with new features and preparing it for a series of interactive museumins

The development of material flow analysis (MFA) on large-scale systems is challenging due to the complexity and breadth of data that are required and the magnitude of the mass flows involved. This is true, for example, when trying to determine the material and energy flows at the country level of a whole sector, such as mobility. Various studies have provided data on particular aspects of these flows, but they often use different methodologies and generate inconsistent results. The challenge is to structure

Architecture styles characterise families of architectures sharing common characteristics. We have recently proposed configuration logics for architecture style specification. In this technical report, we study a graphical notation to enhance readability and easiness of expression. We study simple architecture diagrams and a more expressive extension, interval architecture diagrams. For each type of diagrams, we present its semantics, a set of necessary and sufficient consistency conditions and a method tha

When Massive Open Online Courses became a hot topic in Europe. The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) decided to take the challenge and launched an internal call for proposals. At the Geodetic Engineering Lab, we saw a possibility to use contact hours for exercises and fieldwork, rather than telling stories and showing diagrams. External students were considered, but the main purpose was to modernise the first year course "Fundamentals of Geomatics" for approximately 250 civil and environmental

A new digital feedback control system (named the SCD "Systeme de Controle Distribue") has been developed, integrated and used successfully to control TCV (Tokamak a Configuration Variable) plasmas. The system is designed to be modular, distributed, and sca ...

A Cyber-Workstation (CW) to study in vivo, real-time interactions between computational models and large-scale brain subsystems during behavioral experiments has been designed and implemented. The design philosophy seeks to directly link the in vivo neurophysiology laboratory with scalable computing resources to enable more sophisticated computational neuroscience investigation. The architecture designed here allows scientists to develop new models and integrate them with existing models (e.g. recursive lea

A systematic framework is developed for the thermo-environomic modeling, analysis and optimization of fuel decarbonization processes using precombustion routes to decarbonize the fuel by CO2 removal before burning the purified H2-rich gas in a gas turbine for power generation. For each process step, the different technological options are summarized in a process block flow diagram. For the syngas synthesis coal and biomass gasification, steam and methane reforming, partial oxidation with pure oxygen or air,

In this paper, we propose an original framework for an intuitive tuning of parameters in image and video segmentation algorithms. The proposed framework is very flexible and generic and does not depend on a specific segmentation algorithm, a particular evaluation metric, or a specific optimization approach, which are the three main components of its block diagram. This framework requires a manual segmentation input provided by a human operator as he/she would have performed intuitively. This input allows th

The parametric uncertainty is defined as the gap between the complete model of a dynamical process and its simplified nominal one which is normally used to investigate the properties of the system. It is because of this model mismatch that the role of sensitivity in designing control systems becomes very important. In robust control, the parametric uncertainty is taken into account in both the analysis and the synthesis phases of the closed-loop system. In this thesis, first, robustness to small parameter v

This project, the computer-aided three-dimensional modeling and visualization of geological structures and properties, was conceived in the framework of the INFOGEOL project, "Modeling of Underground Civil Engineering Works Intersecting Geologic Structures". This project is carried out by the Laboratory of Geology of the Swiss Federal lnstitute of Technology in Lausanne (GEOLEP-EPFL). The work presented here is oriented to solving problems connected with modeling geologic structures rather than civil works,
