Modular Multiplatform Compatible Air Measurement System (MoMuCAMS): a new modular platform for boundary layer aerosol and trace gas vertical measurements in extreme environments

Julia Schmale, Andrea Baccarini, Roman Pohorsky

The Modular Multiplatform Compatible Air Measurement System (MoMuCAMS) is a newly developed in situ aerosol and trace gas measurement platform for lower-atmospheric vertical profiling. MoMuCAMS has been primarily designed to be attached to a Helikite, a ru ...

Brown carbon absorption in the Mediterranean basin from local and long-range transported biomass burning air masses

Athanasios Nenes

This study examines the impact of light absorption from biomass burning (BB) brown carbon (BrC) in the Mediterranean basin from local and distant fire incidents during a typical fire season in August 2019 and under severe fire activity in August 2021. The ...

MoMuCAMS: A new modular platform for boundary layer aerosol and trace gas vertical measurements in extreme environments

Julia Schmale, Andrea Baccarini, Roman Pohorsky

The Modular Multiplatform Compatible Air Measurement System (MoMuCAMS) is a newly developed in situ aerosol and trace gas measurement payload for lower atmospheric vertical profiling in extreme environments. MoMuCAMS is a multiplatform compatible system, p ...

Assessing sublimation during snow transport and sublimation effects on the isotopic composition of water vapor

Armin Sigmund

Sublimation influences the water storage in snow covers and glaciers, which is important for water use and projections of the sea level rise. Yet, it is challenging to quantify sublimation for large areas or in conditions of snow transport. In-situ measure ...

Unraveling submesoscale processes associated with meso- and basin-scale gyres in Lake Geneva

Seyed Mahmood Hamze Ziabari

In large lakes, basin-scale gyres and submesoscale eddies, i.e., rotating coherent water masses, play a key role in spreading biochemical materials and energy throughout the basin, thereby significantly impacting water quality. Due to their transient and s ...

Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Snow on Central Arctic Sea Ice and its Implications

David Nicholas Wagner

This thesis presents a comprehensive investigation of the interaction between precipitation and wind-induced erosion and deposition of snow on Arctic sea ice. The study uses observations from the 2019-2020 MOSAiC expedition and makes use of the 3D snow cov ...

A Case Study on Drivers of the Isotopic Composition of Water Vapor at the Coast of East Antarctica

Michael Lehning, Armin Sigmund

Stable water isotopes (SWIs) contain valuable information on the past climate and phase changes in the hydrologic cycle. Recently, vapor measurements in the polar regions have provided new insights into the effects of snow-related and atmospheric processes ...

Nitrogen oxides in the free troposphere: implications for tropospheric oxidants and the interpretation of satellite NO2 measurements

Ilann Ernest Valentin Bourgeois

Satellite-based retrievals of tropospheric NO(2)columns are widely used to infer NOx (equivalent to NO + NO2) emissions. These retrievals rely on model information for the vertical distribution of NO2. The free tropospheric background above 2 km is particu ...

Wind‐Induced Hypolimnetic Upwelling Between the Multi‐Depth Basins of Lake Geneva During Winter: An Overlooked Deepwater Renewal Mechanism?

David Andrew Barry, Ulrich Lemmin, Rafael Sebastian Reiss

Combining field observations, 3D hydrodynamic modeling, and particle tracking, we investigated wind-induced interbasin exchange between the Petit Lac (PL) (depth 75 m) and Grand Lac (GL) (depth 309 m) basins of Lake Geneva in early winter. Following a stro ...

Aerobiology over the Southern Ocean – implications for bacterial colonization of Antarctica

Julia Schmale

Parts of the Antarctic are experiencing dramatic ecosystem change due to rapid and record warming, which may weaken biogeographic boundaries and dispersal barriers, increasing the risks of biological invasions. In this study, we collected air samples from ...

Exploring the link between austral stratospheric polar vortex anomalies and surface climate in chemistry-climate models

Nora Bergner

Extreme events in the stratospheric polar vortex can lead to changes in the tropospheric circulation and impact the surface climate on a wide range of timescales. The austral stratospheric vortex shows its largest variability in spring, and a weakened pola ...

Modeling the small-scale deposition of snow onto structured Arctic sea ice during a MOSAiC storm using snowBedFoam 1.0

Michael Lehning

The remoteness and extreme conditions of the Arctic make it a very difficult environment to investigate. In these polar regions covered by sea ice, the wind is relatively strong due to the absence of obstructions and redistributes a large part of the depos ...

Pan-Arctic seasonal cycles and long-term trends of aerosol properties from 10 observatories

Julia Schmale, Jakob Boyd Pernov

Even though the Arctic is remote, aerosol properties observed there are strongly influenced by anthropogenic emissions from outside the Arctic. This is particularly true for the so-called Arctic haze season (January through April). In summer (June through ...

Biomass burning and marine aerosol processing over the southeast Atlantic Ocean: a TEM single-particle analysis

Athanasios Nenes, Jonathan Marc Taylor

This study characterizes single-particle aerosol composition from filters collected during the ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS (ORACLES) and CLoud-Aerosol-Radiation Interaction and Forcing: Year 2017 (CLARIFY-2017) campaigns. I ...

Overview of the MOSAiC expedition—Atmosphere

Julia Schmale

With the Arctic rapidly changing, the needs to observe, understand, and model the changes are essential. To support these needs, an annual cycle of observations of atmospheric properties, processes, and interactions were made while drifting with the sea ic ...

Diurnal evolution of negative atmospheric ions above the boreal forest: from ground level to the free troposphere

Lubna Dada

At SMEAR II research station in Hyytiala, located in the Finnish boreal forest, the process of new particle formation and the role of ions has been investigated for almost 20 years near the ground and at canopy level. However, above SMEAR II, the vertical ...

Present and Future of Rainfall in Antarctica

Alexis Berne

While most precipitation in Antarctica falls as snow, little is known about liquid precipitation, although it can have ecological and climatic impacts. This study combines meteorological reports at 10 stations with the ERA5 reanalysis to provide a climatol ...

Modelling the small-scale deposition of snow onto structured Arctic sea ice during a MOSAiC storm using snowBedFoam 1.0

Michael Lehning, Mahdi Jafari

The remoteness and extreme conditions of the Arctic make it a very difficult environment to investigate. In these regions, the wind has a substantial effect and redistributes a large part of the snow, which complicates precipitation estimates. Moreover, th ...

Large contribution to secondary organic aerosol from isoprene cloud chemistry

Julia Schmale

Aerosols still present the largest uncertainty in estimating anthropogenic radiative forcing. Cloud processing is potentially important for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, a major aerosol component: however, laboratory experiments fail to mimic ...

The impact of secondary ice production on Arctic stratocumulus

Athanasios Nenes, Georgia Sotiropoulou

In situ measurements of Arctic clouds frequently show that ice crystal number concentrations (ICNCs) are much higher than the number of available ice-nucleating particles (INPs), suggesting that secondary ice production (SIP) may be active. Here we use a L ...
