Yves PerriardYves Perriard was born in Lausanne in 1965. He received the M. Sc. in Microengineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne (EPFL) in 1989 and the Ph D. degree in 1992. Co-founder of Micro-Beam SA, he was CEO of this company involved in high precision electric drive. Senior lecturer from 1998 and professor since 2003, he is currently director of Laboratory of Integrated Actuators. His research interests are in the field of new actuator design and associated electronic devices. In 2009, he is appointed Vice-Director of the Microengineering Institute in Neuchâtel until 2011. In 2013 the Federal Council has named him the the CTI commission in Bern. In 2014 he is appointed guest professor at Zhejiang University in China. In 2017, the lab is granted by the Werner Siemens Foundation of an amount of 12 millions CHF in order to set up a new Center for Artificial Muscules.

Molinari is the director of the Computational Solid Mechanics Laboratory (http://lsms.epfl.ch) at EPFL, Switzerland. He holds an appointment in the Civil Engineering institute, which he directed from 2013 to 2017, and a joint appointment in the Materials Science institute. He started his tenure at EPFL in 2007, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2012. He is currently an elected member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation in Division 2 (Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences), and co editor in chief of the journal Mechanics of Materials. J.F. Molinari graduated from Caltech, USA, in 2001, with a M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics. He held professorships in several countries besides Switzerland, including the United States with a position in Mechanical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University (2000-2006), and France at Ecole Normale Supérieure Cachan in Mechanics (2005-2007), as well as a Teaching Associate position at the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris (2006-2009). The work conducted by Prof. Molinari and his collaborators takes place at the frontier between traditional disciplines and covers several length scales from atomistic to macroscopic scales. Over the years, Professor Molinari and his group have been developing novel multiscale approaches for a seamless coupling across scales. The activities of the laboratory span the domains of damage mechanics of materials and structures, nano- and microstructural mechanical properties, and tribology. Mengjie ZhaoMengjie Zhao holds degrees in Computational Mechanics (MSc) with honors track and in Engineering Science (BSc) from the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
From the early years of her studies, Mengjie was fascinated by the modeling of multiphysics and multiscale systems. As a student research assistant at TUM and research intern at International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE), she gained a solid understanding of both the theoretical and algorithmic fundamentals as well as a wide range of applications. Through the BGCE project with the Elitenetzwerk Bayern (ENB), which dealt with the mesh sensitivity prediction with a deep neural network, she realized that leveraging data could bring physical modeling far beyond the current computational limits. Later, in her master's thesis in cooperation with Siemens, she turned to the reduced-order modeling with enforced physical invariants, which showed better accuracy and generality.
In her Ph.D., she would like to step towards a further combination of deductive research (modeling and simulation) and inductive (data-driven) research by embedding physics into machine learning.
