Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) stand out as versatile devices with promising applications. Their use has been proposed as artificial muscle implants, aiming to replace paralyzed facial muscles and restore the corresponding movements. By reinforcing DEAs with unidirectional fibres, substantial uniaxial deformations can be induced, resulting in previously reported strains up to 75% higher than isotropic DEAs. In this work, the control of the actuator is explored by investigating the dynamic electro-vis

Two-stage AC/DC converters are typically realized with an Active Front End (AFE) unit followed by an isolated DC/DC unit. In single-phase systems, the AFE unit introduces a second-order harmonic ripple to the system, which can undesirably propagate to the output voltage. If the DC/DC is realized with a Series-Resonant Converter (SRC), the propagation of the second-order harmonic ripple can be neutralized by controlling its switching frequency. The operating principle and steady-state performances of this ac

Instabilities can generate fast and amplified motion in mechanical systems. Here, we present an elasto-magnetic instability that combines magnetic attraction and elastic tension to create bistable dynamics. To demonstrate this, we built a coupled elasto-magnetic vibration system that produces amplified motion and greater displacement and force than a control system across a wide frequency range. We also establish design principles that can be applied to different configurations by studying the balance betwe

Solid-state transformers (SSTs) are emerging as pivotal power interface devices between medium-voltage grids and low-voltage loads. This paper presents the control system development and Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop (RT-HIL) validation of a 250 kW, 3.3 kVAC/800 VDC modularized-bridge-rectifier (mBR) SST, which features a streamlined submodule structure comprising only one diode and one isolated DC/DC converter. A modeling approach based on the 𝑑𝑞0 − ΣΔ transformation is introduced, through which the branc

W environment in steady-state tokamak (WEST) experiments aim to achieve long plasma pulses (1000 s) and to expose ITER-like tungsten divertor to power fluxes up to 10 MW/m2. To increase the margin to reach H-Mode regimes and control W-impurities in the plasma, the WEST ECRH system is upgraded to a power capability of 3 MW/1000 s at the frequency of 105 GHz. The Tore Supra ECRH antenna has first been improved and is now installed in the equatorial plane of WEST to start ECRH operation on plasma. On the power

Bacteriophage infection and lysis are typically associated with bacterial death, yet they also release cellular components that can be reutilized by surviving cells, particularly under nutrient limitation. To quantify the short-term growth consequences of this process, we established a controlled system of two Escherichia coli lysogenic strains, one harboring a wild-type prophage and the other a temperature-inducible prophage, enabling selective lysis of a defined fraction of the population. Following induc

Most reported anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) are currently limited to the usual 1−10 cm 2 electrodes in singlecell AEMWEs; however, accelerating its technology readiness level necessitates an explosive increment in unit sizes. We report the design, characterization, and validation of a 1 kW, 500 cm 2 (5 × 100 cm 2) non-PGM AEMWE stack. Complete with corrosion protection, internal heating, and a control system, the patented stack design operated stably at 1.0 A cm −2 with an energy effi

As the complexity of modern control systems increases, it becomes challenging to derive an accurate model of the uncertainty that affects their dynamics. Wasserstein Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) provides a powerful framework for decision-making under distributional uncertainty only using noise samples. However, while the resulting policies inherit strong probabilistic guarantees when the number of samples is sufficiently high, their performance may significantly degrade when only a few data ar

Buildings are a substantial, and sometimes overlooked, consumer of energy, accounting for roughly a third of global primary energy consumption, with roughly half of that being used for heating and cooling. While the replacement rate of buildings is low, and energy retrofits are challenging, if possible at all, the installation of an advanced control system is comparatively quick and simple. This may be done in an effort to reduce a building's energy consumption by avoiding excessive heating or cooling, but

Burnt oil shale (BOS), obtained from the combustion of oil shale, is a promising supplementary cementitious material (SCM) based on its chemistry and mineralogy. This paper summarizes the use of BOS and its hydration in blended cements. It presents new data on the effect of combinations of alkali activators and Ca(NO3)2 in blended cements containing 50 % Portland cement (OPC) where BOS is combined with limestone, fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag. These chemical admixtures increase the slope

The tokamak in Lausanne, Switzerland (TCV), has been designed to investigate highly elongated plasmas. The elongation improves performance but also introduces a vertical position instability which requires active feedback control to stabilize. The potential high growth rate of this instability requires a fast response time. For this reason TCV has a set of magnetic coils which are placed inside the vacuum vessel. These coils are able to act on the plasma faster than the coils that are located outside of the

Soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) based devices often use heuristic approaches for designing the power and control system, which are not necessarily optimized for the application. Especially in portable applications, due to constraints on the overall size and weight, appropriate sizing, selection and design of pneumatic systems can greatly affect mobility and usability. As actuator output depends on flow and pressure dynamics, an in-depth study of the pneumatic circuit (set of interconnected components forming

The main characteristics of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) have been successfully investigated in JET (Joint European Torus) using the scheme of sweeping-frequency external excitation with tracking of the synchronously-detected resonances. However, due ...

Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB) can be used as energy storage device, for example to account for wind or solar power fluctuations. In VRFBs charge is stored in two tanks containing two different vanadium solutions. This approach decouples the storage capacity and the power supply which is dependent only on the number and size of the cells [1]. A control specific model of a VRFB is proposed, which captures the essential dynamic properties of the battery while ignoring all fluid mechanical eleme

The Wendelstein 7-X stellarator is a large nuclear fusion device based at Max-Planck-Institut fur Plasmaphysik in Greifswald in Germany. The main plasma heating system for steady state operation in W7-X is electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). Durin ...

The nematode Caernohabditis elegans is one of the most employed small model organisms in biology. Studies on transgenic animals often require the accurate observation of highly localized fluorescent signals inside the worms at high magnification, hence demanding the full immobilization of the animals. Moreover, in order to observe the dynamics of biological processes over the lifespan of a worm, the same worm has to be immobilized repeatedly, in a reversible manner and under normal physiological conditions.

A new digital feedback control system (named the SCD "Systeme de Controle Distribue") has been developed, integrated and used successfully to control TCV (Tokamak a Configuration Variable) plasmas. The system is designed to be modular, distributed, and sca ...
