A Unified Framework for Modelling Modern Relational Network Data

This thesis concerns the nonparametric estimation of decorated graphons, symmetric measurable functions

W : [0,1]^2 \to \mathcal{P}(\mathcal{K})

that generalize classical graphon models beyond binary edges to networks carrying rich edge attributes such as weights and types. While decorated graphons were introduced as limit objects in graph theory, no estimation theory was available prior to this work. The thesis addresses this gap along three axes: rich edge attributes, temporal dynamics, and computationa

Central limit theorem for the Allen-Cahn equation with supercritical random initial conditions

We study the large-scale behavior of solutions to the Allen-Cahn reaction-diffusion equation with Gaussian initial data. We consider the case of short-range dependence in the associated supercritical regime with spatial dimension d ≥ 3. In this case, the non-linearity formally vanishes on large scales under the diffusive rescaling. Accordingly, we prove a central limit theorem for the rescaled solution, more precisely, that it converges to the solution of the heat equation started from a white noise. These

Decentralized Primal-Dual Learning over Directed Graphs

Distributed adaptation and learning over directed, unbalanced graphs poses unique challenges due to asymmetric communication and heterogeneous data across nodes. In this work, we introduce a novel class of first-order primal–dual stochastic gradient algorithms for such graphs. Our flagship algorithm, called primal-dual pull diffusion stochastic gradient, is designed to update both the decision variables (primal) and the associated multipliers (dual) using two left-stochastic combination matrices. This desig

Self-supervised k-Space Regularization for Motion-Resolved Abdominal MRI Using Neural Implicit k-Space Representations

Neural implicit k-space representations have shown promising results for dynamic MRI at high temporal resolutions. Yet, their exclusive training in k-space limits the application of common image regularization methods to improve the final reconstruction. In this work, we introduce the concept of parallel imaging-inspired self-consistency (PISCO), which we incorporate as novel self-supervised k-space regularization enforcing a consistent neighborhood relationship. At no additional data cost, the proposed reg

Three-dimensional buoyant hydraulic fractures: finite volume release

Brice Tanguy Alphonse Lecampion, Andreas Möri

In impermeable media, a hydraulic fracture can continue to expand even without additional fluid injection if its volume exceeds the limiting volume of a hydrostatically loaded radial fracture. This limit depends on the mechanical properties of the surround ...

MATHICSE Technical Report : Generalized Parallel Tempering on Bayesian Inverse Problems

Fabio Nobile

In the current work we present two generalizations of the Parallel Tempering algorithm, inspired by the so-called continuous-time Infinite Swapping algorithm. Such a method, found its origins in the molecular dynamics community, and can be understood as the limit case of the continuous-time Parallel Tempering algorithm, where the (random) time between swaps of states between two parallel chains goes to zero. Thus, swapping states between chains occurs continuously. In the current work, we extend this idea t

Iterative simulation and optimization approach for energy performance evaluation of ground source heat pump systems

The energy transition in Switzerland specifies reduction of the country’s primary energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In the building sector, one way to achieve this is through adoption of efficient and sustainable technologies. With this aim, the building energy systems are gaining complexity. Modelling tools are becoming increasingly important in the design and evaluation of such systems. Two modelling methods are commonly used, simulation and optimization, which substantially differ in their

Limits to dark matter annihilation cross-section from a combined analysis of MAGIC and Fermi-LAT observations of dwarf satellite galaxies

Thomas Günther Bretz

We present the first joint analysis of gamma-ray data from the MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes and the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to search for gamma-ray signals from dark matter annihilation in dwarf satellite galaxies. We combine 158 hours of Segue 1 ob ...

Transverse heat transfer coefficient in the dual channel ITER TF CICCs Part II. Analysis of transient temperature responses observed during a heat slug propagation experiment

A heat slug propagation experiment in the final design dual channel ITER TF CICC was performed in the SULTAN test facility at EPFL-CRPP in Villigen PSI. We analyzed the data resulting from this experiment to determine the equivalent transverse heat transfe ...

Revisiting the Limit Behaviour of ``El Botellon"

Jean-Yves Le Boudec

Emergent phenomena occur due to the pattern of non-linear and distributed local interactions between the elements of a system over time. An example of such phenomena is the spontaneous self-organisation of drinking parties in the squares of cities in Spain, also known as

El Botellon". The emergence of self-organisation was shown to depend critically on the chat-probability, i.e. the probability that a person finds someone to chat with in a square of the city. We consider a variant of

El Botellon" in whi
