Can Galactic Magnetic Fields Diffuse Into the Voids?

Cosmic voids are magnetized at the level of at least 10-17 G on Mpc scales, as implied by blazar observations. We show that an electrically conducting plasma is present in the voids, and that, because of the plasma, diffusion into the voids of galactic fields generated by a mean-field dynamo is far too slow to explain the present-day void magnetization. Indeed, we show that even in the presence of turbulence in the voids, dynamo-generated galactic fields diffuse out to a galactocentric radius of only 200-40

Simulation of plasma turbulence in the boundary of magnetic fusion devices with a realistic wall geometry

The performance of a tokamak strongly depends on the turbulent dynamics in the plasma boundary region, which separates the core plasma from the vessel's plasma facing components. In fact, the boundary region regulates the refueling of the main plasma as well as its impurity contamination, while simultaneously determining the peak particle and heat fluxes impinging on material surfaces. Improving the understanding of the boundary region is therefore of critical interest to interpret existing experiments and

Effects of magnetic ripple on 3D equilibrium and alpha particle confinement in the European DEMO

Ambrogio Fasoli, Jonathan Graves, Wilfred Anthony Cooper, David Pfefferlé

An assessment of alpha particle confinement is performed in the European DEMO reference design. 3D MHD equilibria with nested flux-surfaces and single magnetic axis are obtained with the VMEC free-boundary code, thereby including the plasma response to the ...

Superdiffusive transport in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas

Ambrogio Fasoli, Ivo Furno, Paolo Ricci, Kyle Gustafson, Alexandre Dominique Bovet

In the last few years it has been demonstrated, both by data analysis and by numerical simulations, that the transport of energetic particles in the presence of magnetic turbulence can be superdiffusive rather than normal diffusive (Gaussian). The term ‘su ...

Improved confinement in high-density H-modes via modification of the plasma boundary with lower hybrid waves

Christian Gabriel Theiler, Yu Lin, Peng Xu

Injecting Lower Hybrid Range of Frequency (LHRF) waves into Alcator C-Mod's high-density H-mode plasmas has led to enhanced global energy confinement by increasing pedestal temperature and pressure gradients, decreasing the separatrix density, modifying th ...

Evidence for the Importance of Trapped Particle Resonances for Resistive Wall Mode Stability in High Beta Tokamak Plasmas

Holger Reimerdes

Active measurements of the plasma stability in tokamak plasmas reveal the importance of kinetic resonances for resistive wall mode stability. The rotation dependence of the magnetic plasma response to externally applied quasistatic n=1 magnetic fields clea ...

A Far-Infrared Polarimeter Diagnostic for the Measurement of the Poloidal Magnetic Field in the TCV Tokamak

Information about the poloidal field inside the plasma and about the current density profile is essential for the understanding of the behavior of tokamak plasmas. The poloidal field outside the plasma edge is easily measured by a set of magnetic coils, wh ...

Determination of the antisymmetric part of the chemical shift anisotropy tensor via spin relaxation in nuclear magnetic resonance

Geoffrey Bodenhausen

Relaxation processes induced by the antisymmetric part of the chemical shift anisotropy tensor (henceforth called anti-CSA) are usually neglected in NMR relaxation studies. It is shown here that anti-CSA components contribute to longitudinal relaxation rates of the indole N-15 nucleus in tryptophan in solution at different magnetic fields and temperatures. To determine the parameters of several models for rotational diffusion and internal dynamics, we measured the longitudinal relaxation rates R-1=1/T-1 of

Full tokamak discharge simulation and kinetic plasma profile control for ITER

Sun Hee Kim

Understanding non-linearly coupled physics between plasma transport and free-boundary equilibrium evolution is essential to operating future tokamak devices, such as ITER and DEMO, in the advanced tokamak operation regimes. To study the non-linearly couple ...
