Principle and Analysis of Radial-Force-Based Swirling Actuator for Low-Speed High-Torque Applications

This article proposes a swirling actuator that uses the electromagnetic radial force and mechanical gears to generate rotational torque. The proposed actuator generates a rotating radial force between an inner stator and a swirler. The gears on the swirler ...

Efficient equilibrium-based stress recovery for isogeometric laminated curved structures

Pablo Antolin Sanchez

This work extends the stress recovery for laminated composite solid plates, proposed in [1,2], to curved structures. Based on 3D Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) computations and equilibrium, this procedure uses a single element through the thickness in combina ...

Foucault pendulum properties of spherical oscillators

Simon Nessim Henein, Ilan Vardi, Patrick Robert Flückiger

In 1851 Léon Foucault created a sensation with his pendulum providing a direct demonstration of the turning of the Earth. This simple device consists of a pendulum which is launched in a purely planar orbit. Following Mach's principle of inertia, the mass ...

Shapes of rotating normal fluid He-3 versus superfluid He-4 droplets in molecular beams

Christoph Bostedt

Previous single-pulse extreme ultraviolet and x-ray coherent diffraction studies revealed that superfluid He-4 droplets obtained in a free jet expansion acquire sizable angular momentum, resulting in significant centrifugal distortion. Similar experiments ...

Analysis and Transfer of Human Movement Manipulability in Industry-like Activities

Sylvain Calinon

Humans exhibit outstanding learning, planning and adaptation capabilities while performing different types of industrial tasks. Given some knowledge about the task requirements, humans are able to plan their limbs motion in anticipation of the execution of ...

Leap-frog transport of magnetically driven anisotropic colloidal rotors

Ignacio Pagonabarraga Mora

In this article, we combine experiments and theory to investigate the transport properties of anisotropic hematite colloidal rotors that dynam ically assemble into translating clusters upon application of a rotating magnetic field. The applied field exerts ...

Segregation of large particles in dense granular flows suggests a granular Saffman effect

Christophe Ancey, Kasper van der Vaart

We report on the scaling between the lift force and the velocity lag experienced by a single particle of different size in a monodisperse dense granular chute flow. The similarity of this scaling to the Saffman lift force in (micro-) fluids, suggests an in ...

Theory and design of spherical oscillator mechanisms

Ilan Vardi, Roland Andreas Bitterli, Mohammad Hussein Kahrobaiyan, Lennart Rubbert, Billy Nussbaumer, Nicolas Ferrier

In previous work, we showed that two degree of freedom oscillators can be advantageously applied to horological time bases since they can be used to eliminate the escapement mechanism. We subsequently examined planar two degree of freedom oscillators based ...

One-step solution to local tie vector determination at co-located GNSS/VLBI sites

Jean-Philippe Lucien Montillet

The local tie vector, which connects the different space geodetic techniques at a co-located site, plays an important role in the realization of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). This paper presents a new method to determine the tie vec ...

Learning Externally Modulated Dynamical Systems

Aude Billard, Klas Jonas Alfred Kronander, Nicolas Sommer

Dynamical Systems (DS) are often used to represent motion, with the advantage of being easy to learn from demonstrations. We present a method to modulate DS depending on an external signal, extending our previous work on Locally Modulated DS (LMDS, Kronand ...

Flow separation at convex banks in open channels

Koen Blanckaert

Laboratory experiments in an open channel bend provide insight into the physics of convex bank flow separation occurring in a variety of channel configurations, including confluences and bifurcations. The edge of the zone of flow separation is characterize ...

The effective reference frame in perceptual judgments of motion direction

Michael Herzog

The retinotopic projection of stimulus motion depends both on the motion of the stimulus and the movements of the observer. In this study, we aimed to quantify the contributions of endogenous (retinotopic) and exogenous (spatiotopic and motion-based) refer ...

Parallel imaging with phase scrambling

Rolf Gruetter, Daniel Gallichan

PURPOSE: Most existing methods for accelerated parallel imaging in MRI require additional data, which are used to derive information about the sensitivity profile of each radiofrequency (RF) channel. In this work, a method is presented to avoid the acquisi ...

Finite Particle Flow Simulation of Free Jet Deviation by Rotating Pelton Buckets

Christian Vessaz

The prediction of hydraulic machines performances is of high interest to manufacturers in today's highly competitive market for new development or refurbishment of hydraulic power plant. An accurate prediction of the machines performances by numerical simu ...

Field-like interactions between motion-based reference frames

Michael Herzog

A reference frame is required to specify how motion is perceived. For example, the motion of part of an object is usually perceived relative to the motion of the object itself. Johansson (Psychological Research, 38, 379-393, 1976) proposed that the percept ...

The inviscid, compressible and rotational, 2D isotropic Burgers and pressureless Euler-Coriolis fluids: Solvable models with illustrations

The coupling between dilatation and vorticity, two coexisting and fundamental processes in fluid dynamics (Wu et al., 2006, pp. 3, 6) is investigated here, in the simplest cases of inviscid 2D isotropic Burgers and pressureless Euler Coriolis fluids respec ...

High Throughput-Per-Footprint Inertial Focusing

Martinus Adela Maria Gijs, Ata Tuna Ciftlik

Matching the scale of microfluidic flow systems with that of microelectronic chips for realizing monolithically integrated systems still needs to be accomplished. However, this is appealing only if such re-scaling does not compromise the fluidic throughput ...

Fictive Axis Emulator-based State Feedback Vector Current Control for Single-Phase Voltage Source Converters

Alfred Rufer, Michail Vasiladiotis

This paper presents a vector current control method tailored for single-phase voltage source converters. In order to imitate the behavior of a three-phase system, the Fictive Axis Emulation (FAE) concept is employed. The latter is able to synthesize the ro ...

Full-field drift Hamiltonian particle orbits in axisymmetric tokamak geometry

Wilfred Anthony Cooper

A Hamiltonian/Lagrangian theory to describe guiding center orbit drift motion that is canonical in Boozer magnetic coordinates is developed to include full electrostatic and electromagnetic perturbed fields in axisymmetric tokamak geometry. Furthermore, th ...

Multivariable-PI-based DQ Current Control of Voltage Source Converters with Superior Axes Decoupling Capability

Alfred Rufer, Behrooz Bahrani, Stephan Kenzelmann

This paper presents a linear direct-quadrature (dq) current control strategy for voltage source converters (VSCs) in a rotating reference frame (RRF). The described method is based on Multivariable proportional-integral (PI) regulators and provides fast dy ...
