On Balanced Representation Learning in Neural Networks

The efficient training of large-scale deep neural networks currently relies on an ecosystem of optimization heuristics, including weight decay, learning rate warmup, and specific parameterizations. Despite their ubiquity, the fundamental mechanisms driving their success remain poorly understood. Through applied analysis and large-scale experimentation, this thesis establishes that these key methods share a common underlying benefit: they balance the speed at which internal representations change across vary

Results of the Academic Citizens’ Assembly - SIC 2025

Results of the Academic Citizens' Assembly-SIC 2025 This report summarizes the process, results, and insights of the Academic Citizens' Assembly (ACA) organized by SIC, EPFL's student-led sustainable innovation challenge (epfl-sic.ch), together with Sascha Nick, on Friday 14.03.2025 in Lausanne. The Assembly question was “How to ensure technology innovation benefits society?”, specifically: How to ensure technology initiatives contribute to a better society, by: A. Inspiring learning and collaboration,

LLMs for Resource Allocation: A Participatory Budgeting Approach to Inferring Preferences

Boi Faltings

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly expected to handle complex decision-making tasks, yet their ability to perform structured resource allocation remains underexplored. Evaluating their reasoning is also difficult due to data contamination and the static nature of existing benchmarks. We present a dual-purpose framework leveraging Participatory Budgeting (PB) both as (i) a practical setting for LLM-based resource allocation and (ii) an adaptive benchmark for evaluating their reasoning capabilities

Ecologie politique des votations fédérales sur l’environnement en Suisse, 1981-2010

Political cohesion is a key form of collective socio-ethical manifestations of solidarity and cooperation in groups. The disappearance of traditional political lines among voters and in the political elite destabilizes political institutions. Research finds that lack of cohesion among voters can lead to an increase in social injustice and the unequal empowerment of affluent minorities. In the midst of elections, the notion of “culture wars,” the idea of a pervasive and growing divide among the population ov

Updated emissions scenarios without measures, 1990-2035

The goal of this study is to estimate the net impact of all policies and measures implemented in the context of the Swiss energy and climate policies on CO2 emissions from combustion processes between 1990 and 2035. The study provides a projection of CO2 emissions until 2035 under the assumption of continuation of existing measures, optionally including the strengthening as adopted by the popular vote on the first package of measures of the Energy Strategy 2050 on 21 May 2017. It contrasts these emissions w

Fast Non-Blocking Atomic Commit: An Inherent Trade-off

Rachid Guerraoui, Partha Dutta

This paper investigates the time-complexity of the non-blocking atomic commit (NBAC) problem in a synchronous distributed model where t out of n processes may fail by crashing. We exhibit for t > 3 an inherent trade-off between the fast abort property of NBAC, i.e., aborting a transaction as soon as possible if some process votes no,'' and the fast commit property, i.e., committing a transaction as soon as possible when all processes vote yes'' and no process crashes. We also give two algorithms: the fi
