On Detection of Depression in Parkinson’s Disease Patients’ Speech: Handcrafted Features vs. Speech Foundation Models

This study investigates speech-based depression detection in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD), comparing two feature representation approaches: interpretable handcrafted acoustic features and non-interpretable representations derived from Speech Foundation Models (SFMs). Using the DAIC-WOZ corpus for typical depression (non-PD speech) and the PD-Depression corpus for depression in atypical speech (PD speech). We first examine the viability of handcrafted features and then analyse how acoustic descr

From Brittle to Flexible: Influence of Glucose‐Based Additives on Cellulose Nanocrystal Self‐Assembly in Suspension and Dried Photonic Films

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films can exhibit reflective and iridescent coloration due to their self‐assembled structure, but are brittle. This study compares glucose (monosaccharide), maltose (disaccharide), and gluconic acid (acidic sugar) as plasticizers and links suspension self‐assembly behavior to the optical and mechanical properties of the resulting films. Glucose‐plasticized films have been previously studied, but maltose and gluconic acid have not yet been applied in this capacity. Here, glucose a

Encapsulating Textiles with Dynamic Covalent Networks for Sustainable and Efficient Oil Spill Cleanup

The development of high‐performance sorbents for oil spill remediation is highly desirable, which now calls for the integration of sustainable design in the context of advancing a circular materials economy. Here, we report a class of textile composites prepared through encapsulating industrially relevant fabrics with dynamic imine networks, which combine exceptional oil removal efficiency with intrinsic chemical recyclability. The dynamic imine networks are synthesized via a one‐pot polycondensation of ter

Cation Dehydration by Surface-Grafted Phenyl Groups for Enhanced C2+ Production in Cu-Catalyzed Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Hubert Girault

The challenge to produce multicarbon (C2+) products in high current densities in the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) has motivated intense research. However, the ability of solvated cations to tune and activate water for C2+ production in the CO2RR has been overlooked. In this study, we report the incorporation of a covalently grown layer of functionalized phenyl groups on the Cu surface that leads to a 7-fold increase in ethylene production (to -530 mA cm-2) and a 6-fold increase in C2+

Longitudinal Dynamic fMRI Analysis of Music vs Singing Perception in Preterm Infants

Motivation: Instrumental music and singing differ due to the vocal component of the sung melody and present distinct neural processing pathways, though its developmental origins remain unclear. Goal(s): This study explores the early development of music vs singing brain processing. Approach: Dynamic PPI-CAPs approach was applied to longitudinal fMRI data of preterm infants at 33- and 40-weeks gestational age. Results: Singing elicited a stronger activation of salience and language-related networks, while mu

Age-related alterations of myeloid cell mitochondrial function and mitophagy contribute to the onset of atherosclerosis

Background and Aims: Aging is an independent and dominant risk factor for atherosclerosis and is associated with a low-grade chronic inflammation termed inflammaging. This age-induced pro-inflammatory environment may have great impact on plaque-residing immune cells, including mast cells. Mast cells have been found to accumulate in the human atherosclerotic plaque upon disease progression and have been associated with plaque instability. However, it is currently unknown whether aging drives the pro-atheroge

Learning voice source related information for depression detection

During depression neurophysiological changes can occur, which may affect laryngeal control i.e. behaviour of the vocal folds. Characterising these changes in a precise manner from speech signals is a non trivial task, as this typically involves reliable separation of the voice source information from them. In this paper, by exploiting the abilities of CNNs to learn task-relevant information from the input raw signals, we investigate several methods to model voice source related information for depression de

Improving Children Speech Recognition through Feature Learning from Raw Speech Signal

Children speech recognition based on short-term spectral features is a challenging task. One of the reasons is that children speech has high fundamental frequency that is comparable to formant frequency values. Furthermore, as children grow, their vocal apparatus also undergoes changes. This presents difficulties in extracting standard short-term spectral-based features reliably for speech recognition. In recent years, novel acoustic modeling methods have emerged that learn both the feature and phone classi

Characterisation of voice quality of Parkinson's disease using differential phonological posterior features

Change in voice quality (VQ) is one of the first precursors of Parkinson's disease (PD). Specifically, impacted phonation and articulation causes the patient to have a breathy, husky-semiwhisper and hoarse voice. A goal of this paper is to characterize a VQ spectrum -- the composition of non-modal phonations -- of voice in PD. The paper relates non-modal healthy phonations: breathy, creaky, tense, falsetto and harsh, with disordered phonation in PD. First, statistics are learned to differentiate the modal a

Multisensory integration of dynamic voices and faces in the monkey brain

[...] Primates are social animals whose communication is based on their conspecifics' vocalizations and facial expressions. Although a lot of work to date has studied the unimodal representation of vocal or facial information, little is known about the way the nervous system supports the processing of communication signals from different sensory modalities to combine them into a coherent audiovisual percept. In noninductively driven discharges, 0.9 MW second harmonic (X2) off-axis co-electron cyclotron current drive deposition is combined with 0.45 MW X2 central heating to create an electron internal transport barrier (eITB) in steady plasma conditions resulting in a 1.6-fold increase of the confinement time (tau(Ee)) over ITER-98L-mode scaling. The eITB is associated with a reversed shear current profile enhanced by a large bootstrap current fraction (up to 80%) and is sustained for up to 10 current redistribu

The coupling between catabolism and anabolism of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum in H2- and iron-limited continuous cultures

Urs von Stockar, Ian William Marison, Damien Voisard

The aim of the present work was to investigate whether uncoupling of catabolism from anabolism, which was often obsd. in heterotrophic microorganisms under energy-sufficient growth conditions, also occurs in the autotrophic bacterium M. thermoautotrophicum. For this purpose, M. thermoautotrophicum was cultivated in continuous cultures that were limited by the trace element Fe. The influences of both diln. rate and Fe supply rate on the coupling between anabolism and catabolism were investigated. As compared

Vibratory characteristics of erosive cavitation vortices downstream of a fixed leading edge cavity

François Avellan

To identify the distinctive vibratory characteristics of erosive cavitation an investigation program was conducted in the IMHEF High Speed Cavitation Tunnel on a NACA 009 stainlcs~: steel profile equipped with 7 DECER electrochemical cavitation erosion detcctors and high frequency vibration sensors. Forces acting on the profile were inferred from a measured transmissibility function. Above a low threshold value a linear relationship was found between the measured mean square value of acceleration and the av
