Multi camera, high data rate SPAD imaging for computation-intensive applications

Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) detection technologies are increasingly important across various scientific domains, due to their ability to capture high-resolution temporal data. However, they face critical challenges in {\em in-vivo} applications, such as afterpulsing artifacts that degrade signal fidelity, a lack of synchronization between multiple cameras that limits temporal alignment and data coherence, and the generation of extremely high data volumes that strain readout and processing capabilit

Euclid Quick Data Release (Q1): XXVIII. The Strong Lensing Discovery Engine C – Finding lenses with machine learning

Strong gravitational lensing has the potential to provide a powerful probe of astrophysics and cosmology, but fewer than 1000 strong lenses have been confirmed so far. With a 0.″16 resolution covering a third of the sky, the Euclid telescope will revolutionise the identification of strong lenses, with 170 000 lenses forecasted to be discovered amongst the 1.5 billion galaxies it will observe. We present an analysis of the performance of five machine-learning models at finding strong gravitational lenses in

Software of TTool: a supervised AI-assisted Visual Pose Detector for AR Wood-working

TTool is developed at the Laboratory for Timber Construction (director: Prof.Yves Weinand) with the support of the EPFL Center for Imaging and the SCITAS, at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland. The project is part of the Augmented Carpentry Research. It is an open-source AI-powered and supervised 6DoF detector for monocular camera. It is developed in C++ and for UNIX systems to allow accurate end-effectors detection during wood-working operations such as cutting, drilling, sawing and screwing with multiple tools.

LenslessPiCam: A Hardware and Software Platform for Lensless Computational Imaging with a Raspberry Pi

Martin Vetterli

Lensless imaging seeks to replace/remove the lens in a conventional imaging system. The earliest cameras were in fact lensless, relying on long exposure times to form images on the other end of a small aperture in a darkened room/container (camera obscura). The introduction of a lens allowed for more light throughput and therefore shorter exposure times, while retaining sharp focus. The incorporation of digital sensors readily enabled the use of computational imaging techniques to post-process and enhance r

Turning a normal microscope into a super-resolution instrument using a scanning microlens array

Martinus Adela Maria Gijs, Gergely Huszka

We report dielectric microsphere array-based optical super-resolution microscopy. A dielectric microsphere that is placed on a sample is known to generate a virtual image with resolution better than the optical diffraction limit. However, a limitation of s ...

Towards evasive maneuvers with quadrotors using dynamic vision sensors

We present a method to predict collisions with objects thrown at a quadrotor using a pair of dynamic vision sensors (DVS). Due to the micro-second temporal resolution of these sensors and the sparsity of their output, the object's trajectory can be estimated with minimal latency. Unlike standard cameras that send frames at a fixed frame rate, a DVS only transmits pixel-level brightness changes (“events”) at the time they occur. Our method tracks spherical objects on the image plane using probabilistic track

Interconnected Network of Cameras

Yusuf Leblebici, Pierre Vandergheynst, Alexandre Schmid

The real-time development of multi-camera systems is a great challenge. Synchronization and large data rates of the cameras adds to the complexity of these systems as well. The complexity of such system also increases as the number of their incorporating cameras increases. The customary approach to implementation of such system is a central type, where all the raw stream from the camera are first stored then processed for their target application. An alternative approach is to embed smart cameras to these s

Results of the prototype camera for FACT

The maximization of the photon detection efficiency (PDE) is a key issue in the development of cameras for Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiodes (G-APD) are a promising candidate to replace the commonly used photomultiplier tubes by offering a larger POE and in addition a facilitated handling. The FACT (First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope) project evaluates the feasibility of this change by building a camera based on 1440 G-APDs for an existing small telescope. As a first s

Implementation and testing of the JET gamma-ray cameras neutron filters pneumatic system

Neutron filters/attenuators have been designed and constructed as an upgrade of the JET gamma-ray cameras (GRC's). This diagnostics upgrade should reduce the neutron flux at the gamma-ray detectors in a way that it would make possible gamma-ray imaging measurements in high power deuterium JET pulses, and eventually in deuterium-tritium discharges. The attenuators will be placed within the GRC diagnostics system between the vacuum vessel port and the camera collimator radiation shields in the case of both th

On Pixel Detection Threshold in the Gigavision Camera

Martin Vetterli, Sabine Süsstrunk, Luciano Sbaiz

Recently, we have proposed a new image device called gigavision camera whose most important characteristic is that pixels have binary response. The response function of a gigavision sensor is non-linear and similar to a logarithmic function, which makes the camera suitable for high dynamic range imaging. One important parameter in the gigavision camera is the threshold for generating binary pixels. Threshold T relates to the number of photo-electrons necessary for the pixel output to switch from "0" to "1".

Registration for Super-Resolution: Theory, Algorithms, and Applications in Image and Mobile Video Enhancement

Martin Vetterli, Luciano Sbaiz, Patrick Vandewalle

The relation between sensor resolution and the optics of a digital camera is determined by the Nyquist sampling theorem: the sampling frequency should be larger than twice the maximum frequency of the image content coming out of the optical system. If a lower resolution is used, the output is aliased. Aliasing in digital images is often considered as a nuisance and (both optical and digital) filters are designed to avoid aliasing in digital cameras. However, aliasing also contains extra high-frequency infor

A mobile mapping system for road data capture via a single camera

Jan Skaloud, Pierre-Yves Gilliéron

The development of road telematics requires the management of continuously growing road databases. Mobile mapping systems can acquire this information, while offering an unbeatable productivity with the combination of navigation and videogrammetry tools. However, such technically advanced devices only go together with significant investments in staff and hardware. The Geodetic Engineering laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne continues developing user-friendly and low-cost proc
