Identifying Moving Objects in Astronomical Surveys Using Artificial Intelligence

Moving objects appear as streaks of light in astronomical images due to their apparent motion relative to background stars. As surveys increase their sky coverage and depth, finding and characterising these streaks has become an increasingly important challenge to the astronomical community. Among natural objects that produce streaks, asteroids and comets are central to understanding the formation and evolution of our Solar System. If their orbits pass close to Earth, they can also become a social concern b

Design of a Multi-modal Morphing Robot for Asteroid Surface Exploration

ASTRID (Asteroid Shape-shifting Robot for Intelligent Discovery) is a two-wheeled novel robotic system designed for crater exploration on small planetary bodies. ASTRID's dual hopping and roving mobility system enables energy-efficient long-range locomotion, and precise short-range maneuvers in microgravity. The robot is lowered into asteroid craters in a ball configuration via a tether attached to the mission lander. Upon reaching the crater slope, ASTRID splits into two wheels, morphing their shape and di

What Questions Can I Ask? A Taxonomy and Question Catalog for Process Mining Analysis Questions

Analysts play a critical role in examining and interpreting data in process mining projects. However, specific goals for such projects are not always clearly stated nor translated into concrete analysis questions, hindering analysts to derive analysis results effectively. To address this issue, the authors in this work follow an established method for taxonomy design in information system research and propose a categorization schema for the key components of process mining analysis questions. The authors co

Computational and Physical Structures in Robot Throwing

Object transport is a major application of robots in logistics and manufacturing automation. In the long-standing effort to optimize operations, robot throwing introduces a new paradigm, offering unprecedented dexterity and efficiency. Yet, existing solutions are limited by narrow operating conditions (restricted postures and object sets), reliance on data-driven black-box models, and sample-intensive learning, all of which hinder scalability and deployment. To address these challenges, this thesis conduct

Divertor power load studies for attached L-mode single-null plasmas in TCV

Holger Reimerdes, Benoît Labit, Christian Gabriel Theiler, Cedric Kar-Wai Tsui, Wouter Vijvers, Roberto Maurizio

This paper investigates the power loads at the inner and outer divertor targets of attached, Ohmic L-mode, deuterium plasmas in the TCV tokamak, in various experimental situations using an Infrared thermography system. The study comprises variations of the ...

Impact of the plasma geometry on divertor power exhaust: experimental evidence from TCV and simulations with SolEdge2D and TOKAM3X

Holger Reimerdes, Christian Gabriel Theiler, Davide Galassi, Cedric Kar-Wai Tsui, Roberto Maurizio

A deep understanding of plasma transport at the edge of magnetically confined fusion plasmas is needed for the handling and control of heat loads on the machine first wall. Experimental observations collected on a number of tokamaks over the last three dec ...

Integrating anthropogenic material stocks and flows into modern resource classification frameworks

This study investigates how anthropogenic resources could fit into the United Nations Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources 2009 (UNFC-2009). Compared to geogenic resources, anthropogenic deposits are more heterogeneous and often more decentralized. Further, the human impact on production, consumption and disposal, combined with significantly shorter time spans of renewal are major differences. Factors influencing the classification of anthropogenic material deposits

Improved confinement in high-density H-modes via modification of the plasma boundary with lower hybrid waves

Christian Gabriel Theiler, Yu Lin, Peng Xu

Injecting Lower Hybrid Range of Frequency (LHRF) waves into Alcator C-Mod's high-density H-mode plasmas has led to enhanced global energy confinement by increasing pedestal temperature and pressure gradients, decreasing the separatrix density, modifying th ...

Ground to Flight Investigations of Hayabusa with Ablation Effects

Pénélope Leyland

Thermal protection systems (TPS) are of extreme importance for the survival of space vehicles especially during superorbital re-entry to Earth. The design of thermal protection systems requires in-depth knowledge of the thermal loading experienced during a re-entry. The thermal loading data is mostly determined using ground testing and can be backed up by modelling activities including computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The verification of this data with flight data is invaluable and a recent, rare example

SUNMAP: A Tool for Automatic Topology Selection and Generation for NoCs

Increasing communication demands of processor and memory cores in Systems on Chips (SoCs) necessitate the use of Networks on Chip (NoC) to interconnect the cores. An important phase in the design of NoCs is the mapping of cores onto the most suitable topology for a given application. In this paper, we present SUNMAP a tool for automatically selecting the best topology for a given application and producing a mapping of cores onto that topology. SUNMAP explores various design objective such as minimizing aver
