Aerosol-cloud interactions over the high Arctic: CLeancloud Arctic VIllum ExpeRiment (CLAVIER) overview

The Arctic is warming up to 4 times faster than the global average, leading to rapid ice melting and consequently, a drastic change of the sources and processing of aerosols and their impact on clouds. Monitoring of these changes over the Arctic is extremely sparse, especially in the most remote regions where harsh conditions make it difficult to carry out even simple measurements. To address these knowledge gaps and develop better and new methods of remote sensing of aerosols and clouds, the CleanCloud pro

Nonlinear reversal of photoexcitation on the attosecond time scale improves ultrafast X-ray diffraction images

The complex refractive index of a material governs its light-matter interactions, with intense light fields enabling tailored nonlinear optical responses. In the X-ray regime, rapid photoionization limits the potential of nonlinear techniques by inducing irreversible electronic damage. Here we demonstrate that intense, sub-femtosecond X-ray pulses, shorter than typical Auger decay times, can partially reverse photoexcitation via stimulated emission near atomic resonances. By analyzing thousands of coherent

ICRH simulations for the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator

We present the current status of ion-cyclotron-resonance heating (ICRH) simulations for Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), a large, superconducting, optimized stellarator in Greifswald, Germany. More experimental experience with the ICRH antenna at W7-X, in dipole and monopole configuration, has been gained in the experimental campaign conducted from autumn 2024 to spring 2025. Several tools are available for explaining the experimental findings and for planning new experiments. They range from simple cold plasma mode

Structural and Parametric Contributions to Aerosol Effective Radiative Forcing Uncertainty in a Two-Model Perturbed Parameter Ensemble

Aerosol–cloud and aerosol–radiation interactions remain among the dominant sources of uncertainty in estimates of effective radiative forcing (ERF). Perturbed parameter ensembles (PPEs) are now increasingly used to evaluate climate model forcings and to diagnose sources of uncertainty. PPEs systematically sample uncertainty by performing large sets of simulations in which key model parameters are perturbed, allowing the sensitivity of model outcomes to individual processes to be quantified. When combined wi

Overview of the MAST Upgrade physics programme: testing novel concepts at low aspect ratio to inform future devices

Olivier Sauter, Holger Reimerdes

The research programme performed on the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) Upgrade experiment has made significant advances in developing the physics understanding of low aspect ratio tokamaks in support of the operation of ITER and design of fusion powerplants. High performance plasma scenarios have been developed to facilitate a broad programme of experiments, in which confinement is constrained by the presence of m/n = 2/1 modes that cause substantial losses of fast ions. The onset of these modes coincide

Future of light ions at LHC: Run 4 and beyond

In recent years, upgrades across CERN’s injector complex and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have significantly enhanced the performance in the ion program with Pb beams, reaching new records. While heavy-ion operation will continue in Run 4 (2030–2033), the objectives for Run 5 (currently foreseen to start in 2036) would benefit from significantly higher nucleon–nucleon luminosity. Since further major gains with the present Pb–Pb configuration are not obvious, this work explores the use of lighter ion spec

Element-specific, non-destructive profiling of layered heterostructures

Fabrication of semiconductor heterostructures is now so precise that metrology has become a key challenge for progress in science and applications. It is now relatively straightforward to characterize classic III-V and group IV heterostructures consisting of slabs of different semiconductor alloys with thicknesses of

Unraveling Molecular Structure: a Multimodal Spectroscopic Dataset for Chemistry

Spectroscopic techniques are essential tools for determining the structure of molecules. Different spectroscopic techniques, such as Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Infrared spectroscopy, and Mass Spectrometry, provide insight into the molecular structure, including the presence or absence of functional groups. Chemists leverage the complementary nature of the different methods to their advantage. However, the lack of a comprehensive multimodal dataset, containing spectra from a variety of spectroscopic t

Advanced RF heating schemes in preparation for ICRF heating and fastion experiments in the W7-X stellarator

Fast ion confinement is crucial for the demonstration of the stellarator approach towards fu- sion energy. To study confinement of fast ions with today’s stellarators advanced RF heating schemes can be used to generate fast ions. Secondly, advanced RF heating schemes are de- veloped to improve ion heating performance. Advanced ICRH schemes (e.g. the 3-ion species scheme [1]) have the advantage of improved polarization, so the wave energy is nearly com- pletely carried by the left hand polarized wave at reso

A benthic foraminifera species respond to anoxia with a strong metabolic shift suggesting a state of dormancy

Low-oxygenation events are more and more frequent and strong on continental shelves and in coastal areas where renewal of bottom waters is slow. Among the meiofauna living in such environments, foraminifera are among the most tolerant to the lack of oxygen. Some benthic foraminiferal species are able to survive hypoxia, and even anoxia, for weeks to months. Different species must have developed different mechanisms for survival - hypotheses include reduction of the metabolism, symbiosis with bacteria, or de
