Office care space Transformation of an existing office and workshop building in Les Acacias (GE)

“While the occupation of office buildings fluctuates according to the economic crises affecting our cities, the question of the future of office buildings and the spaces they offer is more than relevant. New offices keep emerging, following the classical layouts, and the old ones are for the most part left abandoned.” (Grégory Kramer. Kevin Rodriguez, Towards an end of the office? Theorical statement, 2023) Located on a large industrial wasteland in Geneva, the building 5C-5D on Route des Jeunes is an offic

Source-Free Open-Set Domain Adaptation for Histopathological Images via Distilling Self-Supervised Vision Transformer

Jean-Philippe Thiran

There is a strong incentive to develop computational pathology models to i) ease the burden of tissue typology annotation from whole slide histological images; ii) transfer knowledge, e.g., tissue class separability from the withheld source domain to the distributionally shifted unlabeled target domain, and simultaneously iii) detect Open Set samples, i.e., unseen novel categories not present in the training source domain. This paper proposes a highly practical setting by addressing the abovementioned chall

Zürich Stadtspital Triemli Personalhäuser – Resource assessment of structural elements

The Triemli Personalhäuser are three equal 15-story buildings located on the Zürich Triemli Stadtspital campus and erected between 1964 and 1969. Cast-in-place reinforced concrete (RC) slabs and walls form the building cores and their surrounding corridors. The rooms are arranged around these cores. The load-bearing intermediate walls, made of prefabricated masonry, support thin precast slabs used as permanent forms. A RC layer is cast over these precast slabs and connects the room slabs with the cast-in-pl

Push recovery with stepping strategy based on time-projection control

Auke Ijspeert

In this paper, we present a simple control framework for on-line push recovery with dynamic stepping properties. Due to relatively heavy legs in our robot, we need to take swing dynamics into account and thus use a linear model called 3LP which is composed of three pendulums to simulate swing and torso dynamics. Based on 3LP equations, we formulate discrete LQR controllers and use a particular time-projection method to adjust the next footstep location on-line during the motion continuously. This adjustment

Injectable, self-opening, and freestanding retinal prosthesis for fighting blindness made of conjugated polymers

Fighting blindness with retinal prostheses requires challenges not yet achieved: implanting a prosthesis (i) large enough to cover the retinal surface and (ii) embedding a high number of highly dense stimulatory elements. We developed an injectable, self-opening, and freestanding prosthesis restoring at least 40° of visual field, therefore covering at least a retinal surface of 12 mm in diameter. Moreover, the prosthesis has a hemispherical shape in order to minimize the distance from the targeted cells ove

Injectable, Self-opening, and Freestanding Retinal Prosthesis for Fighting Blindness

Purpose:In the past decade, retinal prostheses emerged as promising technology to restore a primitive, although clinically useful, form of vision. However, fighting blindness with retinal prostheses require challenges not yet achieved. From a clinical perspective, sight restoration requires to reach two main goals: enlarging the visual field of the patient and improving its visual acuity. From the engineering point of view, these needs demand the overcoming of two major issues: implanting a prosthesis (i) l

Destination Choice Model including a panel effect using WiFi localization in a pedestrian facility

Michel Bierlaire

This paper proposes a general methodology to model pedestrian destination choice from WiFi localization in multi-modal transport facilities, e.g., airports, railway stations. It is based on the output of Danalet et al. (2014) method to generate candidates of activity-episode sequences from WiFi measurements, locations of activities on a map and prior information. Destination choice is nested to the activity choice. An individual first chooses an activity, and then selects the destination where to perform it

Exploiting pedestrian WiFi traces for destination choice modeling

My master thesis proposes a general methodology to model pedestrian destination choice from WiFi localization in multimodal transport facilities (e.g., airports, railway stations). It is based on the output of [Danalet, A., B. Farooq and M. Estimation of small-world topology of cortical networks using Generalized Linear Models

Since the seminal work of Watts & Strogatz and others in the late 90s [1], graph-theoretic analyses have been performed on many complex dynamic networks, including brain structures. Most studies have focused on functional connectivity defined between whole brain regions, using imaging techniques such as fMRI, EEG or MEG [2]. Only very few studies have attempted to look at the structure of neural networks on the level of individual neurons [3,4]. To the best of our knowledge, these studies have only consider

Unsupervised Learning for Information Distillation

Current document archives are enormously large and constantly increasing and that makes it practically impossible to make use of them efficiently. To analyze and interpret large volumes of speech and text of these archives in multiple languages and produce structured information of interest to its user, information distillation techniques are used. In order to access the key information in response to a request (query), special text processing techniques such as distillation are required. The task consists

Handling Identity in Peer-to-Peer Systems

Karl Aberer

Due to the limited number of available IP addresses most computers on the Internet use dynamic IP addresses which causes problems for applications that have to maintain rout-ing tables, for example, peer-to-peer systems. To overcome this we propose unique peer identifiers in the routing tables and apply the peer-to-peer system itself to maintain consis-tent id-to-IP mappings to be used in the routing process. While this may sound like a recursive hen-egg problem we show that it is in fact possible to devise

Size and top electrode-edge effects on fatigue in Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 capacitors with Pt-electrodes

Nava Setter, Alexander Tagantsev

The occurrence of switching-induced suppression of the remanent polarization (fatigue) in Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 (PZT) ferroelectric capacitors with comb shaped top electrodes was studied by means of scanning force microscopy assisted by a lock-in amplifier. Fatigue occurs earlier in capacitor with narrower comb-fingers, mainly in the central part of the fingers. In addition to this size effect, electrode-edge effects could be observed. Along the edges, in an area of about 250nm width, the preferential direction of t

Charge relaxation at the interfaces of low-voltage ferroelectric film capacitors: Fatigue endurance and size effects

Nava Setter, Alexander Tagantsev, Igor Stolichnov, Enrico Colla

A unified approach for analysis of polarization fatigue and size effects on ferroelectric switching in relationship with injection and entrapment of charge at the interfacial layer of the ferroelectric film is developed. The proposed model suggests that an enhancement of the entrapped charge relaxation at the interfaces has a positive impact on both the polarization fatigue and size effects. This concept is implemented experimentally by introducing a thin conductive oxide (RuO2) layer into the top interface

Frequency dependence of A.c. loss in Bi(2223)Ag sheathed tapes

Bertrand Dutoit, Svetlomir Stavrev

The a.c. self-field loss in Bi(2223)Ag sheathed tapes with different number of filaments has been measured between 59 and 2500 Hz by means of a dual lock-in amplifier. Due to the wide frequency range of the measurements we have been able to dissociate quantitatively the different self-field loss contributions: hysteretic, eddy current and resistive loss (near Ic). This is an important advantage compared to single frequency measurements where such loss dissociation is only qualitative. The hysteresis losses

Eddy current self-field loss in Bi-2223 tapes with ac transport current

Bertrand Dutoit, Svetlomir Stavrev

The a.c. self-field loss in Bi-2223 Ag and Ag-alloy sheathed tapes with different number of filaments has been measured in the range 59-2500 Hz by means of a dual lock-in amplifier technique. We have been able to dissociate quantitatively the different self-field loss contributions: hysteretic, eddy current and flux-creep resistive loss (near Ic) due to their different frequency dependence and the wide frequency range of the measurements. The relative weight of eddy current losses is found to be inversely p
