Formally Verified Certification of Constraint Programming Proofs

As constraint programming (CP) solvers are increasingly used in critical applications, there is a growing need for certification of solver claims of infeasibility and optimality. Recent work has demonstrated that certification is feasible for CP solvers using a multi-stage proof-generation framework; however, the underlying proof system was informal, and verification relied on translation into an external proof format, impacting the trustworthiness. We address these issues by formalising a rigorous, solver-

Spectral estimation for point processes and random fields

Summary Spatial variables can be observed in many different forms, such as regularly sampled random fields (lattice data), point processes and randomly sampled spatial processes. Joint analysis of such collections of observations is clearly desirable, but complicated by the lack of an easily implementable analysis framework. We fill this gap by providing a multitaper analysis framework using coupled discrete and continuous data tapers, combined with the discrete Fourier transform for inference. Using this s

MATHICSE Technical Report : Adaptive isogeometric methods with C1 (truncated) hierarchical splines on planar multi-patch domains

Isogeometric analysis is a powerful paradigm which exploits the high smoothness of splines for the numerical solution of high order partial differential equations. However, the tensor-product structure of standard multivariate B-spline models is not well suited for the representation of complex geometries, and to maintain high continuity on general domains special constructions on multi-patch geometries must be used. In this paper we focus on adaptive isogeometric methods with hierarchical splines, and exte

Flux de (micro)-plastiques dans le bassin versant du Léman

Everywhere around the world, a huge amount of plastics is being produced, used and treated every day. A certain amount of these plastics are badly managed and end up in the environment, where they can be problematic. The deplorable state of the ocean as well as other aquatic environments regarding plastic debris has already been mentioned by many studies, but the real origin of this pollution does, until today, remain uncertain. To partially close that gap of knowledge, each step of the lifecycle has been a

Nodal discontinuous Galerkin methods for fractional diffusion equations on 2D domain with triangular meshes

This paper, as the sequel to previous work, develops numerical schemes for fractional diffusion equations on a two-dimensional finite domain with tri- angular meshes. We adopt the nodal discontinuous Galerkin methods for the full spatial discretization by the use of high-order nodal basis, employ- ing multivariate Lagrange polynomials defined on the triangles. Stability analysis and error estimates are provided, which shows that if polynomials of degree N are used, the methods are (N+1)-th order accurate fo

MATHICSE Technical Report: Reduced basis method and domain decomposition for elliptic problems in networks and complex parametrized geometries

Alfio Quarteroni

The aim of this work is to solve parametrized partial differential equations in computational domains represented by networks of repetitive geometries by combining reduced basis and domain decomposition techniques. The main idea behind this approach is to compute once, locally and for few reference shapes, some representative finite element solutions for different values of the parameters and with a set of different suitable boundary conditions on the boundaries: these functions will represent the basis of

MATHICSE Technical Report : INTERNODES: an accurate interpolation-based method for coupling the Galerkin solutations of PDEs on subdomains featuring non-conforming interfaces

Alfio Quarteroni, Simone Deparis

We are interested in the approximation of partial differential equations on domains decomposed into two (or several) subdomains featuring non-conforming interfaces. The non-conformity may be due to different meshes and/or different polynomial degrees used from the two sides, or even to a geometrical mismatch. Across each interface, one subdomain is identified as master and the other as slave. We consider Galerkin methods for the discretization (such as finite element or spectral element methods) that make u

MATHICSE Technical Report : Moment equations for the mixed formulation of the Hodge Laplacian with stochastic data

Fabio Nobile

We study the mixed formulation of the stochastic Hodge-Laplace problem defined on a n-dimensional domain D (

n \geq 1

), with random forcing term. In particular, we focus on the magnetostatic problem and on the Darcy problem in the three dimensional case. We derive and analyze the moment equations, that is the deterministic equations solved by the m-th moment (

m \geq 1

) of the unique stochastic solution of the stochastic problem. We find stable tensor product finite element discretizations, both full and

Annihilating Polynomials for Quadratic Forms

Let K be a field with char(K) ≠ 2. The Witt-Grothendieck ring (K) and the Witt ring W (K) of K are both quotients of the group ring ℤ[𝓖(K)], where 𝓖(K) := K*/(K*)2 is the square class group of K. Since ℤ[𝓖(K)] is integra ...

Multi-wavelength digital holographic microscopy for sub-micron topography of reflecting specimens

Christian Depeursinge, Tristan Colomb, Etienne Cuche, Florian Charrière, Frédéric Montfort

The study of the internal structures of specimens has a great importance in life and materials sciences. The principle of optical diffraction tomography (ODT) consists in recording the complex wave diffracted by an object, while changing the k vector of the illuminating wave. This way, the frequency domain of the specimen is scanned, allowing reconstructing the scattering potential of the sample in the spatial domain. This work presents a method for sub-micron tomographic imaging using multiple wavelengths

Christian Depeursinge, Tristan Colomb, Etienne Cuche, Florian Charrière, Frédéric Montfort

In this paper we present a method for tomographic imaging using multiple wavelengths in digital holographic microscopy. This method is based on the recording at different wavelengths equally separated in the k-domain, in off- axis geometry of the interference between a reference wave and an object wave reflected by a microscopic sample and magnified by a microscope objective. A couple charged device (CCD) camera records consecutively the resulting holograms, which are then numerically reconstructed to obtai

Convergence analysis of a subdomain iterative method for the finite element approximation of the coupling of Stokes and Darcy equations

Alfio Quarteroni

We consider a Galerkin Finite Element approximation of the Stokes–Darcy problem which models the coupling between surface and groundwater flows. Then we propose an iterative subdomain method for its solution, inspired to the domain decomposition theory. The convergence analysis that we develop is based on the properties of the discrete Steklov–Poincaré operators associated to the given coupled problem. An optimal preconditioner for Krylov methods is proposed and analyzed.

Approximation of multi-scale elliptic problems using patches of finite elements

Jacques Rappaz

In this paper we present a method to solve numerically elliptic problems with multi-scale data using multiple levels of not necessarily nested grids. The method consists in calculating successive corrections to the solution in patches whose discretizations are not necessarily conforming. It resembles the FAC method (see Math. Comp. 46 (174) (1986) 439-456) and its convergence is obtained by a domain decomposition technique (see Math. Comp. 57 (195) (1991) 1-21). However it is of much more flexible use in co

Stable self-assembly of a protein engineering scaffold on gold surfaces

Horst Arthur Vogel, Samuel Terrettaz, Wolf-Peter Ulrich

The outer membrane protein OmpF from Escherichia coli is a member of a large family of b-barrel membrane proteins. Some, like OmpF, are pore-forming proteins while others are active transporters or enzymes. We have previously shown that the receptor-binding domain (R-domain) of the toxin colicin N binds with high affinity to OmpF reconstituted into tethered lipid bilayers on gold electrodes. The binding can be measured by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and ion channel blockage (impedance spectroscopy, IS).

Decorrelation over infinite domains: the encrypted CBC-MAC case

Serge Vaudenay

Decorrelation theory has recently been proposed in order to address the security of block ciphers and other cryptographic primitives over a finite domain. We show here how to extend it to infinite domains, which can be used in the message authentication code (MAC) case. Bellare et al., (1994), proved that CBC-MAC is secure when the input length is fixed. This has been extended by Petrank and Rackoff (1997) with a variable length. We prove a result similar to Petrank and Rackoff's one by using decorrelation
