FloCyT: A Flow-Aware Centroid Tracker for Cell Analysis in High-Speed Capillary-Driven Microfluidic Flow

Capillary-driven microfluidic chips have emerged as promising platforms for point-of-care diagnostics, offering portable, inexpensive, and pump-free operation. Accurate tracking of cell flow in these systems is vital for quantitative applications such as on-chip cytometry, cell counting, and biomechanical analysis. However, tracking in capillary-driven devices is challenging due to rapid cell displacements, flow instabilities, and visually similar cells. Under these conditions, conventional tracking algorit

Development of a hyperspectral camera

The audiovisual communications laboratory (lcav.epfl.ch) is looking for students for the development of an interferential hyperspectral camera, as part of a semester project. It involves building, testing and improving, in collaboration with the scientific and technical team, a portable prototype based on a principle already successfully tested on an optical table. The ideal candidates would be trained in mechanics, electronics, embedded systems or optics.

Using effective medium theories to design tailored nanocomposite materials for optical systems

Toralf Scharf

Modern optical systems are subject to very restrictive performance, size and cost requirements. Especially in portable systems size often is the most important factor, which necessitates elaborate designs to achieve the desired specifications. However, cur ...

Parametric study of Pneumatic Circuit Model for Powering and Controlling Soft Pneumatic Actuators

Soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) based devices often use heuristic approaches for designing the power and control system, which are not necessarily optimized for the application. Especially in portable applications, due to constraints on the overall size and weight, appropriate sizing, selection and design of pneumatic systems can greatly affect mobility and usability. As actuator output depends on flow and pressure dynamics, an in-depth study of the pneumatic circuit (set of interconnected components forming

Two approaches to portable macros

For any programming language that supports macros and has multiple implementations (each with different AST definitions), there is a common problem: how to make macros that operate on ASTs portable among different compiler implementations? Implementing portable macros is especially important for statically typed languages like Scala, as IDE vendors usually have different implementations of the language in order to support rich IDE features. Unportable macros compromise IDE features and degrade programming e

Simultaneous Monitoring of Anesthetics and Therapeutic Compounds with a Portable Multichannel Potentiostat

As metabolic pathways are highly variable among different patients, then an accurate and continuous monitoring of the personal response to drug treatments is essential especially with critical medications, e.g. anesthetic and anti-cancer cocktails. Currently, for anesthesia monitoring, there are no fully mature point-of-care bio-sensing systems. Indeed, it is still evaluated by mathematical models and with indirect parameters like Bispectral Index, which can not provide the actual concentration in bl

Denis Gillet, Stéphane Sire, Evgeny Bogdanov

The trends in web development of educational applications and of Web 2.0 or social applications are converging. Platforms are designed to host a variety of software components (called widgets or plugins), which can be organised or combined (mashed-up) at u ...

Capillary Microfluidic Chips for Point-of-Care Testing : from Research Tools to Decentralized Medical Diagnostics

Research on microfluidic devices for biological analysis has progressed sufficiently to be developed into point-of-care diagnostics products. The goal of this thesis is to improve multiple aspects of capillary-driven microfluidic devices. In particular, th ...

MAC layer functions for SLEF

We develop three functions around the MAC layer: (1) Pseudo broadcast is a technique used to improve throughput of broadcast transmissions in case of congested networks. The mechanism consists in sending a packet in unicast to a station using RTS/CTS. Other stations will receive the packet by capturing all the frames that are transmitted on the network, even if they are not directed to them. (2) The injection rate of packets in the MAC layer has to be controlled. The application must not be allowed to deliv

Exact and Portable Profiling for Java Using Bytecode Instruction Counting

This paper presents a novel profiling approach, which is entirely based on program transformation techniques in order to enable exact profiling, preserving complete call stacks, method invocation counters, and bytecode instruction counters. We exploit the number of executed bytecode instructions as profiling metric, which has several advantages, such as making the instrumentation entirely portable and generating fully reproducible profiling results. These ideas have been implemented as the JP tool. It provi

Evaluation of an ambulatory system for gait analysis in hip osteoarthritis and after total hip replacement

Kamiar Aminian, Bijan Najafi, Philippe Robert

Spatial and temporal parameters of gait have clinical relevance in the assessment of motor pathologies, particularly in orthopaedics. A new gait analysis system is proposed which consists of (a) an ambulatory device (Physilog(R)) including a set of miniature gyroscopes and a portable datalogger, and (b) an algorithm for gait analysis. The aim of this study was the validation of this system, for accuracy and clinical applicability. Eleven patients with coxarthrosis, eight patients with total hip arthroplasty

Ambulatory gait analysis in Parkinson's Disease: Application of a novel method based on kinematics sensors

Kamiar Aminian, Catherine Dehollain

Summary: Using our ambulatory monitoring system, ASUR, 13 Parkinsonian patients were monitored for periods of up to 5 hours while they were free to perform activities at will. Every one hour patients did a UPDRS test as the clinical assessment. During the period of the monitoring, subjects had their Stimulation ON and OFF. Analyzing the data, periods of gait have been detected and gait parameters were calculated. We’ve found significant correlation between the results of this objective method and those of t

Stable Real-Time Interaction Between Virtual Humans and Real Scenes

Daniel Thalmann, Pascal Fua, Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann

We present an augmented reality system that relies on purely passive techniques to solve the real-time registration problem. It can run on a portable PC and does not require engineering of the environment, for example by adding markers. To achieve this result, we have integrated robust computer vision techniques into a powerful VR framework. The resulting AR system allows us to produce complex rendering and animation of virtual human characters, and to blend them into the real world. The system tracks the 3

A parallel implementation of NEC for the analysis of large structures

Farhad Rachidi-Haeri, Abraham Rubinstein

We present a new, parallel version of the numerical electromagnetics code (NEC). The parallelization is based on a bidimensional block-cyclic distribution of matrices on a rectangular processor grid, assuring a theoretically optimal load balance among the processors. The code is portable to any platform supporting message passing parallel environments such as message passing interface and parallel virtual machine, where it could even be executed on heterogeneous clusters of computers running on different op

Energy management in an airflow regulator

Yves Perriard

Artificial respirators use an electric source of energy to supply the various active components which control the airflow. A portable or autonomous respirator (emergency, war, ambulance, etc), needs a battery or an energy container to be supplied with great reliability. This paper describes an industrial project that uses only pneumatic energy to supply all the electronic components. Furthermore, the generator used for the electric supply regulates the airflow by controlling its phase currents

Dynamic power management for portable systems

Portable systems require long battery lifetime while still delivering high performance. Dynamic power management (DPM) policies trade off the performance for the power consumption at the system level in portable devices. In this work we present the time-indexed SMDP model (TISMDP) that we use to derive optimal policy for DPM in portable systems. TISMDP model is needed to handle the non-exponential user request interarrival times we observed in practice. We use our policy to control power consumption on thre

Design and analysis techniques for dynamic current mirrors

Today's world of electronics becomes more and more digital and therefore CMOS becomes the dominant technology. A CMOS process compared to a bipolar process offers several advantages, mainly a low power consumption which is important for portable systems powered by batteries or for large systems. Another point is the smaller device geometries, which increase the number of gates that can be packed on a single chip. Parallel to the increasing digital domain the analog field persists, because the origin of phys
