Comparative Performance and Partial Load Cycling of Sodium‐Metal Chloride Battery Modules With Mixed‐Metal Fe,Zn and Ni,Fe Cells

We present dynamic partial‐load cycling data for high‐temperature sodium–metal chloride battery modules employing nickel‐free cathodes based on iron and zink. The cathodes in these Ni‐free Na‐(Fe,Zn)Cl 2 cells achieve 39% metal utilization and a theoretical energy density of 129 Wh kg −1 at cell level, corresponding to 372 Wh kg −1 at electrode level. Ten‐cell modules incorporating this cathode were assembled and operated under realistic load conditions at 300°C. Dedicated characterization cycles enabled di

Design and Optimization of Macro-Encapsulation Based Latent Heat Energy Storage

Thermal energy storage (TES) plays a pivotal role in meeting growing heating demands while integrating increasing shares of variable renewable energy sources. However, challenges in optimizing system design, performance, and cost-effectiveness remain critical to their widespread adoption. This thesis develops, analyzes, and optimizes macro-encapsulation-based hybrid TES solutions, combining sensible heat storage in water with latent heat storage (using phase change materials), leveraging numerical simulatio

Discrete-Time Domain Modeling of Voltage Source Inverters in Standalone Applications: Enhancement of Regulators Performance by Means of Smith Predictor

Francisco Daniel Freijedo Fernández

The decoupling of the capacitor voltage and inductor current has been shown to improve significantly the dynamic performance of voltage source inverters in standalone applications. However, the computation and pulse width modulation delays still limit the ...

Cost Requirements for a Small-Scale SOFC Fed From Agricultural-Derived Biogas

Jan Van Herle, Dirk Lauinger, Samuel Joseph Christian Majerus

In this work, the use of fuel cells for valorizing agricultural-derived biogas in Switzerland is studied. The Swiss agricultural case is characterized by farms with small numbers of animals (20 cows) and high feed-in tariffs (FIT) for biogas-derived electr ...

Model for charge/discharge-rate-dependent plastic flow in amorphous battery materials

William Curtin, Seyed Mostafa Khosrownejad

Plastic flow is an important mechanism for relaxing stresses that develop due to swelling/shrinkage during charging/discharging of battery materials. Amorphous high-storage capacity Li-Si has lower flow stresses than crystalline materials but there is evid ...

Dimensional and structural control of silica aerogel membranes for miniaturized motionless gas pumps

Paul Muralt, Thomas Maeder

With growing public interest in portable electronics such as micro fuel cells, micro gas total analysis systems, and portable medical devices, the need for miniaturized air pumps with minimal electrical power consumption is on the rise. Thus, the development and downsizing of next-generation thermal transpiration gas pumps has been investigated intensively during the last decades. Such a system relies on a mesoporous membrane that generates a thermomolecular pressure gradient under the action of an applied

Worst-Case Optimal Battery Filling Policies with Constrained Adjustable Service

Jean-Yves Le Boudec

We study battery filling policies with hard deadlines when the supply of energy can be modulated. This occurs for example with an electric plug-in vehicle using an adjustable electricity service for charging; such a service is offered in some countries as a means to provide flexibility to operators, and typically involves non-scheduled service reductions combined with a service guarantee that constrains these reductions. The problem for the battery user is to determine a charging policy, which we call a "co

Low power frequency synthesizer for mobile communications systems

A novel frequency synthesizer with a strong emphasis on low-power consumption (2mW) was developed for this thesis. A BAW-resonator was used for the design of the high-frequency oscillator. The BAW's high Q-Factor ensured a minimal power consumption, while ...

Process for producing Li4Ti5O12 and electrode materials

Michael Graetzel, Ladislav Kavan

Nanostructured Li4Ti5O12 (spinel) was prepared via a method employing lithium ethoxide and Ti(IV) alkoxides as the starting reagents. The optimized materials contained less than 1% of anatase as the main impurity and, depending on the synthetic conditions, they exhibited the BET surface areas of 5-183 m/g. Trace amount of anatase in Li4Ti5O12 was conveniently determined by cyclic voltammetry of Li-insertion. Thin-film electrodes from nanostructured Li4Ti5O12 spinel exhibit excellent activity towards Li-i
