Scalable modular design of solid oxide fuel cell systems for enhanced large-scale power generation

The increasing demand for renewable energy integration and scalable power generation highlights the need for efficient and cost-effective solid oxide fuel cell systems. In this study, we present a modular hybrid design framework that enables flexible solid oxide fuel cell scale-up by interconnecting standardized component modules. We introduce a series-parallel configuration that strategically leverages anode and cathode off-gas recirculation to enhance both electrical and thermal efficiency. Through a deta

Dynamic Transit Priority Lanes in Urban Networks

Together with signal priority, dedication of space to public transport has been the most widely used policy to improve bus operations. Permanent dedicated bus lanes however can lead to an under-utilization of the available space. Dierent strategies such as intermittent bus lanes and bus lanes with intermittent priority try to make the priority lane usable for private vehicles during time windows where no bus is present. Dynamic control strategies focus on regulating the ow of cars on the priority lane, to a

Quantifying and modeling the impact of interconnection failures on the electrical performance of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules

Christophe Ballif, Antonin Faes, Jacques Levrat, Alessandro Francesco Aldo Virtuani, Matthieu Despeisse, Fanny Sculati-Meillaud, Eleonora Annigoni

Failures in the metallic interconnections are among the main degradation modes for photovoltaic modules. Fatigue accumulation due to thermomechanical stresses can result in deterioration of the solder joints or in broken ribbons. In this paper, we first qu ...

Summary of the Test Results of ITER Conductors in SULTAN

Pierluigi Bruzzone, Boris Stepanov

After completing the qualification tests of the ITER cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC), the tests of samples from the series manufacture are running in the SULTAN test facility in Villigen, Switzerland. The key test for the conductor samples is the current sharing temperature, Tcs, at the nominal operating field and current, i.e. the maximum temperature at which the conductors operate before developing an electric field of 10 μV/m. All the TF samples fulfilled the ITER requirement of Tcs ≥ 5.8 K after 1000

Efficient Arithmetic Logic Gates Using Double-Gate Silicon Nanowire FETs

Silicon NanoWire (SiNW) based Field Effect Tran- sistors (FETs) are promising candidates to extend Moore’s law in the coming years. Recently, Double-Gate (DG) SiNWFETs have been demonstrated to allow on-line configurability of n -type and p -type device polarity through the second gate. Such feature enables novel compact realizations for XOR- and MAJ-based logic gates that are intensively used in arithmetic applications. In this paper, we present a complete design framework of DG- SiNWFETs technology for ar

MgB2 Hollow Wires and Cables Embedded in a Mg Alloy Matrix

The brittleness of the MgB2 wires prevents performing a cable architecture with very small bending radius, similar to NbTi Rutherford cables. Consequently, it is important to reduce the thickness of the superconducting materials in order to increase its be ...

Virtual Ways: Efficient Coherence for Architecturally Visible Storage in Automatic Instruction Set Extensions

Paolo Ienne

Customizable processors augmented with application-specific Instruction Set Extensions (ISEs) have begun to gain traction in recent years. The most effective ISEs include Architecturally Visible Storage (AVS), compiler-controlled memories accessible exclusively to the ISEs. Unfortunately, the usage of AVS memories creates a coherence problem with the data cache. A multiprocessor coherence protocol can solve the problem, however, this is an expensive solution When applied in a uniprocessor context. Instead,

Evolution not revolution in the TCV tokamak control and acquisition system

Basil Duval, Jonathan Bryan Lister, Jean-Marc Moret, Philippe Marmillod, Xavier Llobet, Blaise Marlétaz, Pierre-François Isoz

The original TCV control system was designed in the late 1980s to be inherently network based in that all control operations were performed from X-windows terminals and the control computers were networked. Using VMS-VAX technology, the acquisition system (CAMAC) and control system (BITBUS) were connected to controllers situated in the machine bus of these machines that were linked homogeneously by the VMS 'cluster' technology. Although the computing power and network bandwidth have improved considerably ov

Contention-Aware Metrics for Distributed Algorithms: Comparison of Atomic Broadcast Algorithms

André Schiper

Contention-Aware Metrics for Distributed Algorithms: Comparison of Atomic Broadcast Algorithms Peter Urban, Xavier Defago and Andre Schiper Resource contention is widely recognized as having a major impact on the performance of distributed algorithms. Nevertheless, the metrics that are commonly used to predict their performance take little or no account of contention. In this paper, we define two performance metrics for distributed algorithms that account for network contention as well as CPU contention. We

Contention-aware metrics: analysis of distributed algorithms

André Schiper

Resource contention is widely recognized as having a major impact on the performance of distributed algorithms. Nevertheless, the metrics that are commonly used to predict their performance take little or no account of contention. In this paper, we define two performance metrics for distributed algorithms that account for network contention as well as CPU contention. We then illustrate the use of these metrics by comparing four Atomic Broadcast algorithms, and show that our metrics allow for a deeper unders

Performances of multiprocessor multidisk architectures for continuous media storage

Roger Hersch

Multimedia interfaces increase the need for large image databases, capable of storing and reading streams of data with strict synchronicity and isochronicity requirements. In order to fulfill these requirements, the authors consider a parallel image server architecture which relies on arrays of intelligent disk nodes, each disk node being composed of one processor and one or more disks. This contribution analyzes through bottleneck performance evaluation and simulation the behavior of two multi-processor mu

Geographical information system application of multiprocessor multidisk image servers

Roger Hersch

The article analyses the behavior of two kinds of multiprocessor multidisk storage server architectures for a data intensive application, namely for spatial queries in geographical information systems (GIS). The two kinds of servers are: (1) a workstation cluster architecture with multiple processors, multiple disks, and a shared bus shared memory architecture; (2) a distributed memory architecture, similar to the T9000 transputer based architectures, where processing nodes and disk nodes are connected by a
