Relative plus constructions

Let h be a connective homology theory. We construct a functorial relative plus construction as a Bousfield localization functor in the category of maps of spaces. It allows us to associate to a pair (X,H), consisting of a connected space X and an hperfect ...

Mechanics of Physical Knots: From Filaments in Contact to Surgical Suturing

Paul Johanns

In this thesis, we study the mechanics of tight physical knots. Knots are omnipresent in surgery, climbing, and sailing, with disastrous consequences when the filament or the rope fails to perform its function. Even if the importance of mechanical analysis ...

Conditional Flatness, Fiberwise Localizations, And Admissible Reflections

Jérôme Scherer

We extend the group-theoretic notion of conditional flatness for a localization functor to any pointed category, and investigate it in the context of homological categories and of semi-abelian categories. In the presence of functorial fiberwise localizatio ...

FIBERED TORIC VARIETIES

Leonid Monin

A toric variety is called fibered if it can be represented as a total space of fibre bundle over toric base and with toric fiber. Fibered toric varieties form a special case of toric variety bundles. In this note we first give an introduction to the class ...

Persistence and the Sheaf-Function Correspondence

Nicolas Michel Berkouk

The sheaf-function correspondence identifies the group of constructible functions on a real analytic manifold M with the Grothendieck group of constructible sheaves on M. When M is a finite dimensional real vector space, Kashiwara-Schapira have recently in ...

Computational Exploration of Multistable Elastic Knots

Mark Pauly, Yingying Ren, Michele Vidulis

We present an algorithmic approach to discover, study, and design multistable elastic knots. Elastic knots are physical realizations of closed curves embedded in 3-space. When endowed with the material thickness and bending resistance of a physical wire, t ...

Distributional Regression and Autoregression via Optimal Transport

Laya Ghodrati

We present a framework for performing regression when both covariate and response are probability distributions on a compact and convex subset of

Hyperbolic representations of PU(1,n)

Gonzalo Emiliano Ruiz Stolowicz

The work is about the study of group representations in the group of isometries of a separable complex hyperbolic space. The main part is the classification of the representations of the group of isometries of a finite dimensional complex hyperbolic spa ...

The strength of surgical knots involves a critical interplay between friction and elastoplasticity

Pedro Miguel Nunes Pereira de Almeida Reis, Paul Johanns, Paul Grandgeorge

Knots are the weakest link in surgical sutures, serving as mechanical ligatures between filaments. Exceeding their safe operational limits can cause fatal complications. The empirical nature of present guidelines calls for a predictive understanding of the ...

A full characterization of invariant embeddability of unimodular planar graphs

Laszlo Marton Toth

When can a unimodular random planar graph be drawn in the Euclidean or the hyperbolic plane in a way that the distribution of the random drawing is isometry-invariant? This question was answered for one-ended unimodular graphs in Benjamini and Timar, using ...
