Creating Trust by Abolishing Hierarchies

Mathias Josef Payer, Edouard Bugnion, Evangelos Marios Kogias, Adrien Ghosn, Charly Nicolas Lucien Castes, Neelu Shivprakash Kalani, Yuchen Qian

Software is going through a trust crisis. Privileged code is no longer trusted and processes insufficiently protect user code from unverified libraries. While usually treated separately, confidential computing and program compartmentalization are both symp ...

Sustainability and Ethicality are Peripheral to Students’ Software Design

Bryan Alexander Ford, Siara Ruth Isaac, Aditi Kothiyal, Pierluca Borsò

The conceptual design phase is a fascinating moment to observe how a design task is interpreted, as the (often implicit) relative importance students accord to the various requirements and constraints offers a window into the thinking underpinning their de ...

The Theory, Practice, and Ethical Challenges of Designing a Diversity-Aware Platform for Social Relations

Daniel Gatica-Perez

Diversity-aware platform design is a paradigm that responds to the ethical challenges of existing social media platforms. Available platforms have been criticized for minimizing users' autonomy, marginalizing minorities, and exploiting users' data for prof ...

Chirok: a post-refinement tool to analyse absolute structure

Philip Pattison

Chirok is software for a post-refinement test of the absolute structure. The software allows a user to calculate a distribution of the measure of chirality based on intensity quotients and linked to the Flack parameter. The distribution is fitted by a set ...

Protecting Mobile Food Diaries from Getting too Personal

Daniel Gatica-Perez, Lakmal Buddika Meegahapola

Smartphone applications that use passive sensing to support human health and well-being primarily rely on: (a) generating low-dimensional representations from high-dimensional data streams; (b) making inferences regarding user behavior; and (c) using those ...

Soft haptic device to render the sensation of flying like a drone

Dario Floreano, Carine Rognon

Haptic feedback located on the torso is proposed to enhance the state awareness of a user in virtual reality or during teleoperation while leaving the hands free for manipulation and communication. We provide haptic feedback on the torso by compressing a s ...

Spherical Clustering of Users Navigating 360° Content

Pascal Frossard, Francesca De Simone

In Virtual Reality (VR) applications, understanding how users explore the omnidirectional content is important to optimize content creation, to develop user-centric services, or even to detect disorders in medical applications. Clustering users based on th ...

Placement of Virtual Containers on NUMA systems: A Practical and Comprehensive Model

Baptiste Joseph Eustache Lepers

Our work addresses the problem of placement of threads, or virtual cores, onto physical cores in a multicore NUMA system. Different placements result in varying degrees of contention for shared resources, so choosing the right placement can have a large ef ...
