The conception of epoxy thermosets with both reprocessability and flame retardancy delineates a new horizon in polymer science, offering a material solution that is not only superior in fire safety but is also environment friendly. Herein, a flame-retardan ...

Bridges are a critical component of national infrastructures and economies. A significant percentage of bridges built all around the world are made of reinforced concrete which according to building codes have a life span between 80-100 years. However, str ...

Research in nanoscience continues to bring forward a steady stream of new nanomaterials and processes that are being developed and marketed. While scientific committees and expert groups deal with the harmonization of terminology and legal challenges, risk ...

Here we adapt and evaluate a full-face snorkel mask for use as personal protective equipment (PPE) for health care workers, who lack appropriate alternatives during the COVID-19 crisis in the spring of 2020. The design (referred to as Pneumask) consists of ...

The present work assesses human exposure to pesticides in vegetable-producing areas in Burkina Faso, using hair as an indicator. The study design includes a comparison between operators who are occupationally exposed while working in the fields and a refer ...

Pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles are finding increasing applications in civil engineering structures, owing to the several advantages they offer over traditional materials. However, due to the combustible nature of their polymer mat ...

Concrete structures, contrary to steel or timber structures, have not been traditionally considered as significantly sensitive to fire conditions. As a consequence, their performance in fire conditions has generally been assessed on the basis of quite simp ...

Objectives: Many nanomaterials (materials with structures smaller than 100 nm) have chemical, physical and bioactive characteristics of interest for novel applications. Considerable research efforts have been launched in this field. This study aimed to stu ...

Fire is the primary disturbance factor in many terrestrial ecosystems. Wildfire alters vegetation structure and composition, affects carbon storage and biogeochemical cycling, and results in the release of climatically relevant trace gases including CO2, C ...

AimTo reconstruct spatial and temporal patterns of European fire activity during the Holocene and to explore their potential drivers, by relating biomass burning to simulated biotic and abiotic parameters. LocationEurope. MethodsHolocene fire activity was ...

Structural fire endurance experiments were conducted on full-scale cellular glass fiber-reinforced (GFRP) columns under axial compression and subjected to ISO834 fire exposure from one side. Unprotected columns can resist fire for more than 30 min, which i ...

This paper presents results of experimental investigations on the behaviour of GFRP pultruded profiles exposed to fire, in order to study the viability of their structural use in floors of buildings, taking into account the fulfilment of fire resistance re ...

A recently developed thermomechanical model to predict the time-dependent thermal and mechanical responses of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles subjected to fire was extended to include the beneficial effects of passive fire protecti ...

A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a network of usually a large number of small sensor nodes that are wirelessly connected to each other in order to remotely monitor an environment or phenomena. Sensor nodes use the data aggregation method as an effective ...

As the range of applications for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials in civil engineering constantly increases, there is more and more concern with regard to their performance in critical environments. The fire behavior of composite material ...

The fire localization using a distributed consensus finding algorithm in a wireless sensor network is described. The fire is circumscribed by a circle. The information is available at all sensor nodes that are alive, which makes it robust against failures ...

An active fire protection system, liquid-cooling, was applied to pultruded GFRP tubes subjected to combined thermal and mechanical loading in order to maintain material temperature below the critical glass transition temperature. The use of an appropriate ...

This paper presents an experimental study on the fire behavior of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) load- carrying slabs for building and bridge applications. Fire experiments were performed on cellular full-scale slabs with and without internal liquid ...

Switzerland is not a place commonly associated with forest fires, unlike many areas of the nearby Mediterranean Basin. However, in this Alpine country, forest fires occur every year and destroy forests that fulfil various functions, the most socially and e ...

Temperature-dependent material properties of glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites were derived from tests performed on the material itself, from references concerned with similar polymer materials and from observations during full-scale fire experimen ...
