Topological photonic transport in disordered scattering networks

This Ph.D. thesis unveils the unique topological phenomena occurring in such networks, focusing on the intricate interplay between their Floquet topology, the presence of disorder, and their unitary scattering at microscopic and macroscopic scales. Using t ...

Bootstrapping amplitudes of scalar particles

Jan Krzysztof Marucha

Quantum Field Theories are a central object of interest of modern physics, describing fundamental interactions of matter. However, current methods give limited insight into strongly coupling theories. S-matrix bootstrap program, described in this thesis, a ...

The ABCD of topological recursion

Nicolas Gerson Orantin

Kontsevich and Soibelman reformulated and slightly generalised the topological recursion of [43], seeing it as a quantisation of certain quadratic Lagrangians in T*V for some vector space V. KS topological recursion is a procedure which takes as initial da ...

Null energy constraints on two-dimensional RG flows

Grégoire Olivier Mathys

We study applications of spectral positivity and the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) to renormalization group (RG) flows in two-dimensional quantum field theory. We find a succinct new proof of the Zamolodchikov c-theorem, and derive further independ ...

Physical and unphysical regimes of self-consistent many-body perturbation theory

Riccardo Rossi

In the standard framework of self-consistent many-body perturbation theory, the skeleton series for the self-energy is truncated at a finite order N and plugged into the Dyson equation, which is then solved for the propagator G(N). We consider two examples ...

Holography and localization of information in quantum gravity

Alexandre Mathieu Frédéric Belin

Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we identify a class of CFT operators which represent diff-invariant and approximately local observables in the gravitational dual. Provided that the bulk state breaks all asymptotic symmetries, we show that these operator ...

Flux correlators and semiclassics

Riccardo Rattazzi, Alexander Monin, Matthew Thomas Walters, Eren Clément Firat

We consider correlators for the flux of energy and charge in the background of operators with large global U(1) charge in conformal field theory (CFT). It has recently been shown that the corresponding Euclidean correlators generically admit a semiclassica ...

Measurement of the K+ → π+γγ decay

Radoslav Marchevski, Alina Kleimenova

A sample of 3984 candidates of the K+ -> pi(+)gamma gamma decay, with an estimated background of 291 +/- 14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017-2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leadin ...

Experimental observation of topological transition in linear and nonlinear parametric oscillators

Romain Christophe Rémy Fleury, Benjamin Apffel

Parametric oscillators are examples of externally driven systems that can exhibit two stable states with opposite phase depending on the initial conditions. In this work, we propose to study what happens when the external forcing is perturbed by a continuo ...

Magnetism of Single Surface Adsorbed Atoms Studied with Radio-Frequency STM

Clément Marie Soulard

This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules adsorbed on thin magnesium oxide decoupling layers, grown on a silver single crystal. To address these systems experimentally, we use a low temperature scanning tunneling micros ...

Hausdorff dimension of fermions on a random lattice

Mattia Guerino Varrone

Geometric properties of lattice quantum gravity in two dimensions are studied numerically via Monte Carlo on Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations. A new computational method is proposed to simulate gravity coupled with fermions, which allows the study of int ...

Search for new Higgs bosons via same-sign top quark pair production in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV

Jan Steggemann, Konstantin Androsov, Anna Mascellani

A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the pp -> tH/ A -> tt (c) over bar and pp -> tH/ A -> tt

Chiral Anomaly and Dynamos from Inhomogeneous Chemical Potential Fluctuations

Salim Bennouna

In the standard model of particle physics, the chiral anomaly can occur in relativistic plasmas and plays a role in the early Universe, protoneutron stars, heavy-ion collisions, and quantum materials. It gives rise to a magnetic instability if the number d ...

Universal Casimir attraction between filaments at the cell scale

Anne-Florence Raphaëlle Bitbol

The electromagnetic Casimir interaction between dielectric objects immersed in salted water includes a universal contribution that is not screened by the solvent and therefore long-ranged. Here, we study the geometry of two parallel dielectric cylinders. W ...

Strong coupling between a microwave photon and a singlet-triplet qubit

Pasquale Scarlino

Combining superconducting resonators and quantum dots has triggered tremendous progress in quantum information, however, attempts at coupling a resonator to even charge parity spin qubits have resulted only in weak spin-photon coupling. Here, we integrate ...

WILD SOLUTIONS TO SCALAR EULER-LAGRANGE EQUATIONS

Carl Johan Peter Johansson

. We study very weak solutions to scalar Euler-Lagrange equations associated with quadratic convex functionals. We investigate whether W1,1 solutions are necessarily W 1,2 Nash and Schauder applicable. We answer this question positively for a suitable clas ...

Primary and secondary order parameters in the fully frustrated transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice

Frédéric Mila

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and field-theory arguments, we study the fully frustrated transversefield Ising model on the square lattice for the purpose of quantitatively relating two different order parameters to each other. We consider a "primar ...

Anomalous and Chern topological waves in hyperbolic networks

Romain Christophe Rémy Fleury, Haoye Qin, Zhe Zhang, Aleksi Antoine Bossart

Hyperbolic lattices are a new type of synthetic materials based on regular tessellations in non-Euclidean spaces with constant negative curvature. While so far, there has been several theoretical investigations of hyperbolic topological media, experimental ...

BPS invariants from p-adic integrals

Dimitri Stelio Wyss

We define p-adic BPS or pBPS invariants for moduli spaces M-beta,M-chi of one-dimensional sheaves on del Pezzo and K3 surfaces by means of integration over a non-archimedean local field F. Our definition relies on a canonical measure mu can on the F-analyt ...
