SmartSwim: A novel approach to swimming analysis and coaching assistance based on wearable inertial sensors

As one of the three most popular sports in the Summer Olympics, competitive swimming has always been an attractive subject of study for sports scientists. The intricate nature of the swimmer's movements and the variety of techniques have led coaches to req ...

Monitoring weekly progress of front crawl swimmers using IMU-based performance evaluation goal metrics

Kamiar Aminian, Farzin Dadashi, Fabien Massé, Mahdi Hamidi Rad

Technical evaluation of swimming performance is an essential factor in preparing elite swimmers for their competitions. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have attracted much attention recently because they can provide coaches with a detailed analysis of sw ...

A Novel Macro-Micro Approach for Swimming Analysis in Main Swimming Techniques Using IMU Sensors

Kamiar Aminian, Farzin Dadashi, Mahdi Hamidi Rad

Inertial measurement units (IMU) are proven as efficient tools for swimming analysis by overcoming the limits of video-based systems application in aquatic environments. However, coaches still believe in the lack of a reliable and easy-to-use analysis syst ...

Swimming Phase-Based Performance Evaluation Using a Single IMU in Main Swimming Techniques

Kamiar Aminian, Farzin Dadashi, Fabien Massé, Mahdi Hamidi Rad

Comprehensive monitoring of performance is essential for swimmers and swimming coaches to optimize the training. Regardless of the swimming technique, the swimmer passes various swimming phases from wall to wall, including a dive into the water or wall pus ...

A Logic Synthesis Toolbox for Reducing the Multiplicative Complexity in Logic Networks

Giovanni De Micheli, Mathias Soeken, Heinz Riener, Eleonora Testa, Luca Gaetano Amarù

Logic synthesis is a fundamental step in the realization of modern integrated circuits. It has traditionally been employed for the optimization of CMOS-based designs, as well as for emerging technologies and quantum computing. Recently, it found applicatio ...

The Hydrodynamics of a Micro-Rocket Propelled by a Deformable Bubble

François Gallaire, Lailai Zhu, Giacomo Gallino

We perform simulations to study the hydrodynamics of a conical-shaped swimming micro-robot that ejects catalytically produced bubbles from its inside. We underline the nontrivial dependency of the swimming velocity on the bubble deformability and on the ge ...

Rapid Production of Submicron Drug Substance Particles by Supersonic Spray Drying

Esther Amstad

Many newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are poorly soluble in water and thus have a dissolution-limited bioavailability. The bioavailability of Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS) class II APIs increases if they dissolve fas ...

Magnetic helical micromachines: Fabrication, controlled swimming, and cargo transport

Lei Zhang

A simple and general fabrication method for helical swimming micromachines by direct laser writing and e-beam evaporation is demonstrated. The magnetic helical devices exhibit varying magnetic shape anisotropy, yet always generate corkscrew motion using a ...

Controlling swimming and crawling in a fish robot using a central pattern generator

Auke Ijspeert, Alessandro Crespi

Online trajectory generation for robots with multiple degrees of freedom is still a difficult and unsolved problem, in particular for non-steady state locomotion, that is, when the robot has to move in a complex environment with continuous variations of th ...

Online optimization of swimming and crawling in an amphibious snake robot

Auke Ijspeert, Alessandro Crespi

An important problem in the control of locomotion of robots with multiple degrees of freedom (e.g., biomimetic robots) is to adapt the locomotor patterns to the properties of the environment. This article addresses this problem for the locomotion of an amp ...
