Stochastic particle transport by deep-water irregular breaking waves

Correct prediction of particle transport by surface waves is crucial in many practical applications such as search and rescue or salvage operations and pollution tracking and clean-up efforts. Recent results by Deike et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 829, 2017, ...

Mean flow modeling in high-order nonlinear Schrodinger equations

Maura Brunetti, Debbie Eeltink

The evaluation and consideration of the mean flow in wave evolution equations are necessary for the accurate prediction of fluid particle trajectories under wave groups, with relevant implications in several domains, from the transport of pollutants in the ...

Temporal Prediction of Landslide-Generated Waves Using a Theoretical-Statistical Combined Method

Christophe Ancey, Zhenzhu Meng

For the prediction of landslide-generated waves, previous studies have developed numerous empirical equations to express the maximums of wave characteristics as functions of slide parameters upon impact. In this study, we built the temporal relationship be ...

Dissipative Solitons and Switching Waves in Dispersion-Modulated Kerr Cavities

Tobias Kippenberg, Johann Emmeram Riemensberger, Rui Ning Wang, Miles Henry Anderson, Alexey Tikan, Aleksandr Tusnin, Alisa Davydova

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the formation of dissipative coherent structures in Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators, whose spectrum encompasses an integrated dispersion that exceeds the cavity free-spectral range. We are able to acce ...

Nonlinear inviscid damping and shear-buoyancy instability in the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations

Michele Dolce

We investigate the long-time properties of the two-dimensional inviscid Boussinesq equations near a stably stratified Couette flow, for an initial Gevrey perturbation of size & epsilon;. Under the classical Miles-Howard stability condition on the Richardso ...

Euclid: Identification of asteroid streaks in simulated images using deep learning

Frédéric Courbin, Georges Meylan

The material composition of asteroids is an essential piece of knowledge in the quest to understand the formation and evolution of the Solar System. Visual to near-infrared spectra or multiband photometry is required to constrain the material composition o ...

Investigation of the effects of the Greek extreme wildfires of August 2021 on air quality and spectral solar irradiance

Alexandros Papagiannis

In August 2021, a historic heatwave was recorded in Greece which resulted in extreme wildfire events that strongly affected the air quality over the city of Athens. Saharan dust was also transferred over Greece on certain days of the same period due to the ...
