Climate Change Contributions to Increasing Compound Flooding Risk in New York City

Efforts to meaningfully quantify the changes in coastal compound surge- and rainfall -driven flooding hazard associated with tropical cyclones (TCs) and extratropical cyclones (ETCs) in a warming climate have increased in recent years. Despite substantial ...

Waterborne Virus Transport and Risk Assessment in Lake Geneva Under Climate Change

Tamar Kohn, Chaojie Li

Climate changes influence lake hydrodynamics and radiation levels and thus may affect the fate and transport of waterborne pathogens in lakes. This study examines the impact of climate change on the fate, transport, and associated risks of four waterborne ...

Gene expression of Pocillopora damicornis coral larvae in response to acidification and ocean warming

Nils Rädecker

Objectives The endosymbiosis with Symbiodiniaceae is key to the ecological success of reef-building corals. However, climate change is threatening to destabilize this symbiosis on a global scale. Most studies looking into the response of corals to heat str ...

Atmospheric isoprene measurements reveal larger-than-expected Southern Ocean emissions

Julia Schmale, Andrea Baccarini

Isoprene is a key trace component of the atmosphere emitted by vegetation and other organisms. It is highly reactive and can impact atmospheric composition and climate by affecting the greenhouse gases ozone and methane and secondary organic aerosol format ...

Morphometry of Tidal Meander Cutoffs Indicates Similarity to Fluvial Morphodynamics

Andrea Rinaldo

Sinuous channels wandering through coastal wetlands have been thought to lack lateral-migration features like meander cutoffs and oxbows, spurring the broad interpretation that tidal and fluvial meanders differ morphodynamically. Motivated by recent work s ...

Combined Earth observations reveal the sequence of conditions leading to a large algal bloom in Lake Geneva

Rafael Sebastian Reiss

Freshwater algae exhibit complex dynamics, particularly in meso-oligotrophic lakes with sudden and dramatic increases in algal biomass following long periods of low background concentration. While the fundamental prerequisites for algal blooms, namely ligh ...

Stochastic Simulations and Machine Learning Modeling to Predict Bedload Transport and Bed Topography

Mehrdad Kiani Oshtorjani

In computational hydraulics models, predicting bed topography and bedload transport with sufficient accuracy remains a significant challenge. An accurate assessment of a river's sediment transport rate necessitates a prior understanding of its bed topograp ...

Diagenetic isotope exchange in biocalcites for paleoclimate reconstruction

Deyanira Graciela Cisneros Lazaro

The oxygen isotope compositions of fossil biocalcites, such as foraminifera, bivalves, brachiopods, and belemnites have allowed for reconstructions of sea surface and deep ocean temperatures throughout the Phanerozoic and constitute the most important reco ...

The cost of adaptability: resource availability constrains functional stability under pulsed disturbances

Hannes Markus Peter

Global change exposes ecosystems to changes in the frequency, magnitude, and concomitancy of disturbances, which impact the composition and functioning of these systems. Here, we experimentally evaluate the effects of salinity disturbances and eutrophicati ...

Turbulence and Heat exchange in the Near-Surface Boundary Layer over Patchy Snow

Michael Haugeneder

The atmospheric layer adjacent to the earth's surface is of crucial importance for weather models due to the exchange of energy between the surface and the atmosphere. This exchange is dependent on the various surface properties and influences the state of ...

Reducing transport via extreme flux-surface triangularity

Stefano Coda, Justin Richard Ball

Based on a gyrokinetic analysis of and extrapolation from TCV discharges with large negative and positive triangularity delta, the potential of extreme | delta | in reducing turbulent transport is assessed. Linearly, both positive and negative delta can ex ...

Excess labile carbon promotes diazotroph abundance in heat-stressed octocorals

Claudia Isabella Pogoreutz

Nitrogen limitation is the foundation of stable coral-algal symbioses. Diazotrophs, prokaryotes capable of fixing N-2 into ammonia, support the productivity of corals in oligotrophic waters, but could contribute to the destabilization of holobiont function ...

Unraveling submesoscale processes associated with meso- and basin-scale gyres in Lake Geneva

Seyed Mahmood Hamze Ziabari

In large lakes, basin-scale gyres and submesoscale eddies, i.e., rotating coherent water masses, play a key role in spreading biochemical materials and energy throughout the basin, thereby significantly impacting water quality. Due to their transient and s ...

Chimney‐Like Intense Pelagic Upwelling in the Center of Basin‐Scale Cyclonic Gyres in Large Lake Geneva

David Andrew Barry, Ulrich Lemmin, Rafael Sebastian Reiss, Seyed Mahmood Hamze Ziabari, Mehrshad Foroughan

Basin-scale quasi-geostrophic gyres are common features of large lakes subject to Coriolis force. Cyclonic gyres are often characterized by dome-shaped thermoclines that form due to pelagic upwelling that takes place in their center. At present, the dynami ...

Metabolism of the symbiotic jellyfish Cassiopea in a changing environment

Gaëlle Delphine Toullec

Ocean warming and other anthropogenic impacts have led to a global decline in many photosymbiotic cnidarians, most notably reef-building corals. But some species of the symbiotic and (sub-)tropical upside-down jellyfish Cassiopea are increasingly reported ...

Polar oceans and sea ice in a changing climate

Julia Schmale

Polar oceans and sea ice cover 15% of the Earth’s ocean surface, and the environment is changing rapidly at both poles. Improving knowledge on the interactions between the atmospheric and oceanic realms in the polar regions, a Surface Ocean–Lower Atmospher ...

Untangling the influence of Antarctic and Southern Ocean life on clouds

Julia Schmale, Hélène Paule Angot

Polar environments are among the fastest changing regions on the planet. It is a crucial time to make significant improvements in our understanding of how ocean and ice biogeochemical processes are linked with the atmosphere. This is especially true over A ...

Enhancing Flood Resilience: Sediment Management in Le Bez Torrent

Giovanni De Cesare, Azin Amini, Romain Nathan Hippolyte Merlin Van Mol

In the canton of Bern, Switzerland, the “Le Bez” torrent is known for its flash floods, causing sediment and wood debris buildup in Villeret village settled on the alluvial fan. To mitigate this issue, a sediment/wood trap system is being implemented upstr ...

Simulation of fine sediment deposition on floodplains

Giovanni De Cesare, Carmelo Juez Jiménez, Christian Constantin André Scheidegger

Rivers extend beyond the channels that are typically associated with this word. Of particular interest are flood plains, where important hydro- and morphodynamic processes occur as a result of recurrent flooding. Ecologically, they also support the establi ...

Synthesis Report on the Environmental Impacts of Polar Research and Logistics in the Polar Regions

Jérôme Chappellaz

Polar sciences are crucial to understand the effects of climate change. 6 out of 9 eco-tipping points identified by the IPCC are situated in the polar regions. Potential rising sea levels, altered weather patterns and changes in sea-currents are all connec ...
