Climate change is predicted to increase atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, exacerbating soil drought, and thus enhancing tree evaporative demand and mortality. Yet, few studies have addressed the longer-term drought acclimation strategy of trees, particul ...

The use of medicinal plants as a therapy alternative is old as human existence itself. Nowadays, the search for effective molecules for chronic diseases treatments has increased. The cardiometabolic disorders still the main cause of death worldwide and pla ...

The aim of this work is the investigation of mesoscale/local variability in mechanical properties of clear timber in the radial direction. Clear Norway spruce wood, Picea abies, was used for cutting specimens of different lengths with a small cross-section ...

This paper presents a digital joinery generation method for whole-timber structures using wood-wood connections. The research is based on a collaboration with a local timber company located in a mountain area [1]. In this context, there is a need to explor ...

Timber construction plays an important role in architectural history, in modern construction methods and in sustainable design, for which wood-only joinery techniques have been used for centuries. Traditional joinery typologies are the product of successiv ...

Ring width (TRW) chronologies from Siberian (Pinus sibirica) and Scots (Pinus sylvestris) pine trees were sampled at Mukhrino - a large mire complex in central-western Siberia - to evaluate the impacts of hydroclimatic variability on tree growth over the l ...

Switzerland will face higher temperature increases than the global average, which will have strong impacts on the mountain ecosystems. How tree species will respond to future climate change scenarios, and what mechanisms will they adopt, remains as a gap o ...

Different factors such as age, location of timber within the tree, structural imperfections, load history such as wind and snow etc. can affect the material properties of timber. Consequently, there is a high variability in the mechanical properties which ...

Forest decline played a pivotal role in motivating Europe's political focus on sustainability around 35 years ago. Silver fir (Abies alba) exhibited a particularly severe dieback in the mid-1970s, but disentangling biotic from abiotic drivers remained chal ...

In order to optimize sandwich structures, core materials of different density and thus different stiffness and strength are often combined. The material discontinuities at joints of dissimilar core materials may lead to abrupt changes of the shear angles a ...

(+)-Bicyclogermacrene is a strained bicyclic and common sesquiterpene found in several essential oils. A short and good yielding synthesis of bicyclogermacrene proceeding in seven steps is reported. This terpene is used as key platform intermediate for a b ...

The widely available automated prefabrication in timber construction companies, as well as modern CAD software with application programing interfaces, allow for the design and production of increasingly geometrically complex building components. This devel ...

Modern analogs are commonly used to investigate the relationships between modern pollen rain and the surrounding present vegetation and to improve our interpretation of fossil data. We collected modern pollen and spore rain in 18 more or less grazed and/or ...

As anthropogenic N deposition has been suspected to be the main reason for the decline of macromycetous sporocarp production in forest ecosystems, various N-fertilization experiments were started in the mid 1990s. The dynamics of ectomycorrhizal (root-inha ...

A large-scale field experiment on the drying behavior of Norway Spruce (Picea abies Karst.) and Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) in relation to the felling date was conducted over a period of 24 weeks in order to investigate the existence of variatio ...

The protein farnesyltransferase (FTase) is a Zn2+-metalloenzyme that catalyzes the farnesylation reaction, i.e., the transfer of the 15-carbon atom farnesyl group from farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) to a specific cysteine of protein substrates. Oncogenic Ras p ...

The ability of saplings to tolerate browsing (i.e. the ability to persist with reduced biomass and to compensate for biomass loss) is influenced by the level of stress and their growth strategies. Ultimately, insight into species-specific responses of sapl ...

Profiles of the major sulfur functional groups in mature Norway spruce wood tissue have been established for the first time. The big challenge was the development of a method suitable for sulfur speciation in samples with very low sulfur content (

Browsing by livestock has been identified as an important factor preventing tree regeneration in wooded pastures. Two field experiments were performed to investigate the effects of cattle browsing on tree sapling growth in a mountainwooded pasture. Two siz ...

Current conceptual models predict that an increase in stress shifts interactions between plants from competitive to facilitative; hence, facilitation is expected to gain in ecological importance with increasing stress. Little is known about how facilitativ ...
