In vivo X-ray microtomography locally affects stem radial growth with no immediate physiological impact

Charlotte Grossiord, Pascal Turberg, Laura Mekarni

Microcomputed tomography (mu CT) is a nondestructive X-ray imaging method used in plant physiology to visualize in situ plant tissues that enables assessments of embolized xylem vessels. Whereas evidence for X-ray-induced cellular damage has been reported, ...

From roots to canopy: Unraveling the influence of species diversity on tree water relations under warmer and drier climates

Eugénie Isabelle Mas

The worsening of drought events with rising air temperature alters tree water relations causing severe hydraulic impairments and widespread forest mortality. Mixing tree species with contrasting hydraulic traits could reduce forest vulnerability to extreme ...

Tree diversity reduces variability in sapling survival under drought

Charlotte Grossiord

Enhancing tree diversity may be important to fostering resilience to drought-related climate extremes. So far, little attention has been given to whether tree diversity can increase the survival of trees and reduce its variability in young forest plantatio ...

Quantification of Native Lignin Structural Features with Gel-Phase 2D-HSQC0 Reveals Lignin Structural Changes During Extraction

Jeremy Luterbacher, Stefania Bertella, Claire Laura Marion Charline Bourmaud

Our ability to study and valorize the lignin fraction of biomass is hampered by the fundamental and still unmet challenge of precisely quantifying native lignin's structural features. Here, we developed a rapid elevated-temperature H-1-C-13 Heteronuclear S ...

Tree water uptake patterns across the globe

Charlotte Grossiord, Christoph Bachofen

Plant water uptake from the soil is a crucial element of the global hydrological cycle and essential for vegetation drought resilience. Yet, knowledge of how the distribution of water uptake depth (WUD) varies across species, climates, and seasons is scarc ...

Twenty years of irrigation acclimation is driven by denser canopies and not by plasticity in twig- and needle-level hydraulics in a Pinus sylvestris forest

Charlotte Grossiord, Christoph Bachofen, Eugénie Isabelle Mas, Alice Jacqueline Frédérique Gauthey

Climate change is predicted to increase atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, exacerbating soil drought, and thus enhancing tree evaporative demand and mortality. Yet, few studies have addressed the longer-term drought acclimation strategy of trees, particul ...

Invasive palms have more efficient and prolonged CO2 assimilation compared to native sub-Mediterranean vegetation

Charlotte Grossiord, Christoph Bachofen, Janisse Deluigi, Thibaut Michel Georges Juillard

In sub-Mediterranean ecosystems, shade-tolerant broadleaf evergreens, especially the invasive Trachycarpus fortunei, are spreading uncontrollably in the forest understorey, impeding the regeneration of the native deciduous woody vegetation. Most invasive s ...

Reconstruction and analysis of genome-scale metabolic networks in single organisms and microbial communities

Evangelia Vagena

Microorganisms are a key component in the chain of life. They are essential for agriculture, produce a large proportion of oxygen, and play a central role in the cycle of elements. Microorganisms are widely used in the production of food and alcoholic beve ...

Interactions between beech and oak seedlings can modify the effects of hotter droughts and the onset of hydraulic failure

Charlotte Grossiord, Eugénie Isabelle Mas, Janisse Deluigi, Margaux Clara Lou Didion-Gency

center dot Mixing species with contrasting resource use strategies could reduce forest vulnerability to extreme events. Yet, how species diversity affects seedling hydraulic responses to heat and drought, including mortality risk, is largely unknown. Using ...

Seasonal variation in the xylem sap composition of six Australian trees and shrubs

Alice Jacqueline Frédérique Gauthey

In recent years, xylem sap composition has been shown to affect xylem hydraulics. However, information on how much xylem sap composition can vary across seasons and specifically under drought stress is still limited. We measured xylem sap chemical composit ...

Mechanistic 2D flow-erosion modelling of vegetated river banks

Giovanni De Cesare, Paolo Perona

We present a simple, vertically-explicit 2D model of river bank erosion that also takes the effect of sediment stabilization by plant roots into account. The model is solved in quasi-analytical form for an exemplary non-stationary hydrograph temporal signa ...

Ricca's factors as mobile proteinaceous effectors of electrical signaling

Satyam Tiwari

Leaf-feeding insects trigger high-amplitude, defense-inducing electrical signals called slow wave potentials (SWPs). These signals are thought to be triggered by the long-distance transport of low molecular mass elicitors termed Ricca's factors. We sought ...

Water use efficiency: A review of spatial and temporal variability

Gabriele Manoli, Sara Bonetti

Water Use Efficiency (WUE) expresses the trade-off between carbon assimilation (or subsequent carbon storage) and water release, two concurrent gas fluxes essential for plant functioning. Here, we review metrics that have been introduced to quantify WUE ac ...

Neuronal migration prevents spatial competition in retinal morphogenesis

Martin Weigert

The concomitant occurrence of tissue growth and organization is a hallmark of organismal development(1-3). This often means that proliferating and differentiating cells are found at the same time in a continuously changing tissue environment. How cells ada ...

Lignin, from biomass waste to sustainable materials for food packaging, antiviral coatings and agriculture

Alice Boarino

Our planet has been challenged for years by our reckless use of fossil fuels, which has led to the ongoing climate change and energy crisis. The transition to the use of renewable alternative sources has now became urgent and inevitable. The valorization o ...

Selecting Suitable Near-Native Lignins for Research

Jeremy Luterbacher

There are several methods to isolate near-native lignins, including milled-wood lignin, enzymatic lignin, cellulolytic enzyme lignin, and enzymatic mild-acidolysis lignin. Which one is the most representative of the native lignin? Herein, near-native ligni ...

Chronic warming and dry soils limit carbon uptake and growth despite a longer growing season in beech and oak

Charlotte Grossiord, Margaux Clara Lou Didion-Gency

Progressively warmer and drier climatic conditions impact tree phenology and carbon cycling with large consequences for forest carbon balance. However, it remains unclear how individual impacts of warming and drier soils differ from their combined effects ...

Analysis and expansion of the quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime in ASDEX Upgrade

Benoît Labit

The quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime, formerly known as either type-II ELM or small ELM regime is studied in ASDEX Upgrade. The regime is a natural type-I ELM-free H-mode. The operational space of QCE discharges in ASDEX Upgrade with respect to their ...

Phloem water isotopically different to xylem water: Potential causes and implications for ecohydrological tracing

Andrea Rinaldo, Paolo Benettin

The stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in xylem water are often used to investigate tree water sources. But this traditional approach does not acknowledge the contribution of water stored in the phloem to transpiration and how this may affect xylem wat ...
