Resonant Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy of a Single-Molecule Kondo System

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) under ultrahigh vacuum and cryogenic conditions enables exploration of the relations between the adsorption geometry, electronic state, and vibrational fingerprints of individual molecules. TERS capability of reflecti ...

Room-Temperature Quantum Optomechanics and Free-Electron Quantum Optics

Guanhao Huang

Quantum optics studies how photons interact with other forms of matter, the understanding of which was crucial for the development of quantum mechanics as a whole. Starting from the photoelectric effect, the quantum property of light has led to the develop ...

Magnetism of Single Surface Adsorbed Atoms Studied with Radio-Frequency STM

Clément Marie Soulard

This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules adsorbed on thin magnesium oxide decoupling layers, grown on a silver single crystal. To address these systems experimentally, we use a low temperature scanning tunneling micros ...

Strong coupling between a microwave photon and a singlet-triplet qubit

Pasquale Scarlino

Combining superconducting resonators and quantum dots has triggered tremendous progress in quantum information, however, attempts at coupling a resonator to even charge parity spin qubits have resulted only in weak spin-photon coupling. Here, we integrate ...

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy for Molecules: Effects of Electron Propagation into Vacuum

Klaus Kern

Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we experimentally and theoretically investigate isolated platinum phthalocyanine (PtPc) molecules adsorbed on an atomically thin NaCl(100) film vapor deposited on Au(111). We obtain good agreement between theory a ...

A Cavity-Microscope for Quantum Simulations with Locally-Controllable All-to-All Interactions

Nick Jacob Sauerwein

This thesis presents the development, construction, and benchmark of an experimental platform that combines cold fermionic 6Li atoms with locally controllable light-matter interactions. To enable local control, a new device, the cavity-microscope, was crea ...

Large-cage occupation and quantum dynamics of hydrogen molecules in sII clathrate hydrates

Richard Gaal

Hydrogen clathrate hydrates are ice-like crystalline substances in which hydrogen molecules are trapped inside polyhedral cages formed by the water molecules. Small cages can host only a single H-2 molecule, while each large cage can be occupied by up to f ...

Wave-momentum shaping for moving objects in heterogeneous and dynamic media

Romain Christophe Rémy Fleury, Bakhtiyar Orazbayev, Matthieu Francis Malléjac

Light and sound waves can move objects through the transfer of linear or angular momentum, which has led to the development of optical and acoustic tweezers, with applications ranging from biomedical engineering to quantum optics. Although impressive manip ...

The 2024 Magnonics Roadmap

Dirk Grundler

Magnonics is a research field that has gained an increasing interest in both the fundamental and applied sciences in recent years. This field aims to explore and functionalize collective spin excitations in magnetically ordered materials for modern informa ...

Terahertz emission from diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers

László Forró

Coherent light sources emitting in the terahertz range are highly sought after for fundamental research and applications. Terahertz lasers rely on achieving population inversion. We demonstrate the generation of terahertz radiation using nitrogen-vacancy c ...

Valence Orbitals Driving the Spin Dynamics in a Rare-Earth Single-Atom Magnet

Harald Brune, François Patthey, Stefano Rusponi, Marina Pivetta

We combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy with quantum master equation analysis to investigate the spin dynamics of the single atom magnet Dy on graphene/Ir(111). By performing reading and writing experiments, we show that the strongly spin p ...

Machine-learning the electronic density of states: electronic properties without quantum mechanics

Chiheb Ben Mahmoud

The electronic density of states (DOS) quantifies the distribution of the energy levels that can be occupied by electrons in a quasiparticle picture and is central to modern electronic structure theory. It also underpins the computation and interpretation ...

Magnetic orderings and electronic structure of complex oxides from advanced Hubbard functionals

Luca Binci

Transition metal oxides represent a class of materials displaying very unusual electronic, structural and magnetic properties. They are extremely interesting, both from a technological and fundamental point of view. The most important characteristic of the ...

Large Orbital Moment of Two Coupled Spin-Half Co Ions in a Complex on Gold

Stefano Rusponi, Boris Sorokin

The magnetic propertiesof transition-metal ions aregenerallydescribed by the atomic spins of the ions and their exchange coupling. The orbital moment, usually largely quenched due the ligand field,is then seen as a perturbation. In such a scheme, S = 1/2 io ...

Numerical investigation of bound states in quantum magnets

Mithilesh Nayak

Bound-states of particles are an interesting problem in quantum mechanics dating back to 1931 Bethe's solution of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. These exotic composite states are realized in quantum magnets and are detectable in inelastic neutron scattering (I ...

Deuterated TEKPol Biradicals and the Spin-Diffusion Barrier in MAS DNP

David Lyndon Emsley, Dominik Józef Kubicki, Yu Rao, Federico De Biasi, Amrit Venkatesh

The sensitivity of NMR spectroscopy is considerably enhanced by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). In DNP polarization is transferred from unpaired electrons of a polarizing agent to nearby proton spins. In solids, this transfer is followed by the transpo ...

Emergence of Classical Magnetic Order from Anderson Towers: Quantum Darwinism in Action

Frédéric Mila

Environment is assumed to play a negative role in quantum mechanics, destroying the coherence in a quantum system and, thus, randomly changing its state. However, for a quantum system that is initially in a degenerate ground state, the situation could be d ...

Non-Gaussian superradiant transition via three-body ultrastrong coupling

Fabrizio Minganti

We introduce a class of quantum optical Hamiltonians characterized by three-body couplings and propose a circuit-QED scheme based on state-of-the-art technology that implements the considered model. Unlike two-body light-matter interactions, this three-bod ...

Multipolar Pseudochirality-Induced Optical Torque

Olivier Martin, Karim Achouri, Andrei Kiselev, Mintae Chung

It has been observed that achiral nanoparticles, such as flat helices, may be subjected to an optical torque even when illuminated by normally incident linearly polarized light. However, the origin of this fascinating phenomenon has so far remained mostly ...
