Anthony C Davison and Igor Rodionov's contribution to the Discussion of 'Estimating means of bounded random variables by betting' by Waudby-Smith and Ramdas

Anthony Christopher Davison, Igor Rodionov

We derive confidence intervals (CIs) and confidence sequences (CSs) for the classical problem of estimating a bounded mean. Our approach generalizes and improves on the celebrated Chernoff method, yielding the best closed-form "empirical-Bernstein" CSs and ...

Further Collapses in TFNP

Mika Tapani Göös, Gilbert Théodore Maystre

We show EOPL = PLS \cap PsansP \sansP AD. Here the class EOPL consists of all total search problems that reduce to the END -OF -POTENTIAL -LINE problem, which was introduced in the works by Hub'acv \ek and Yogev (SICOMP 2020) and Fearnley et al. (JCSS 202 ...

Gaia Focused Product Release: Radial velocity time series of long-period variables

Stephan Morgenthaler

Context. The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity data planned with Data Release 4, this Focused Product Release (F ...

Permeability sets the linear path instability of buoyancy-driven disks

François Gallaire

The prediction of trajectories of buoyancy-driven objects immersed in a viscous fluid is a key problem in fluid dynamics. Simple-shaped objects, such as disks, present a great variety of trajectories, ranging from zig-zag to tumbling and chaotic motions. Y ...

Super-harmonically resonant swirling waves in longitudinally forced circular cylinders

François Gallaire, Alessandro Bongarzone, Alice Evelyne Julienne Marcotte

Resonant sloshing in circular cylinders was studied by Faltinsen et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 804, 2016, pp. 608-645), whose theory was used to describe steady-state resonant waves due to a time-harmonic container's elliptic orbits. In the limit of longitu ...

Positive Definite Completions and Continuous Graphical Models

Kartik Waghmare

This thesis concerns the theory of positive-definite completions and its mutually beneficial connections to the statistics of function-valued or continuously-indexed random processes, better known as functional data analysis. In particular, it dwells upon ...

HD 213258: A new rapidly oscillating, super slowly rotating, strongly magnetic Ap star in a spectroscopic binary

Pierre North

We report on HD 213258, an Ap star that we recently identified as presenting a unique combination of rare, remarkable properties. Our study of this star is based on ESPaDOnS Stokes I and V data obtained at seven epochs spanning a time interval slightly sho ...

A simple theoretical model for estimating the frequency characteristics of black hole mergers

Roberto Guarino

Gravitational waves, despite predicted within the Theory of General Relativity about a century ago, were observed experi-mentally only in the last few years, thanks to the recent advances of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. In this work, we introduce a simple ...

The long cross-over dynamics of capillary imbibition

Ignacio Pagonabarraga Mora

Spontaneous capillary imbibition is a classical problem in interfacial fluid dynamics with a broad range of applications, from microfluidics to agriculture. Here we study the duration of the cross-over between an initial linear growth of the imbibition fro ...

The eta Aquilae System: Radial Velocities and Astrometry in Search of eta Aql B

Richard Irving Anderson

The classical Cepheid eta Aql was not included in past Leavitt Law work because of a presumed complicating orbit due to a known B9.8V companion. To determine the orbit of eta Aql B, we analyze a significant number of radial velocity (RV) measurements from ...

Stability of a Point Charge for the Vlasov–Poisson System: The Radial Case

Klaus Martin Widmayer

We consider the Vlasov–Poisson system with repulsive interactions. For initial data a small, radial, absolutely continuous perturbation of a point charge, we show that the solution is global and disperses to infinity via a modified scattering along traject ...

Large Steps in Inverse Rendering of Geometry

Wenzel Alban Jakob, Baptiste Alexandre Marie Philippe Claude Nicolet

Inverse reconstruction from images is a central problem in many scientific and engineering disciplines. Recent progress on differentiable rendering has led to methods that can efficiently differentiate the full process of image formation with respect to mi ...

Soil-structure interaction of surface footings

Lyesse Laloui, Cristiano Garbellini

Limit-state analysis of soil-structure interacting systems is a classical problem in theoretical and applied soil mechanics. Usually, the capacities of both components are evaluated separately. However, it is well known that soil-structure interaction play ...

Universal pair polaritons in a strongly interacting Fermi gas

Jean-Philippe Brantut, Victor Youri Helson, Kevin Etienne Robert Roux, Hideki Konishi

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) manipulates the coupling of light with matter, and allows several emitters to couple coherently with one light mode1. However, even in a many-body system, the light–matter coupling mechanism has so far been restricted t ...

Breaking of Internal Waves and Turbulent Dissipation in an Anticyclonic Mode Water Eddy

Bieito Fernandez Castro

A four-month glider mission was analyzed to assess turbulent dissipation in an anticyclonic eddy at the western boundary of the subtropical North Atlantic. The eddy (radius ≈ 60 km) had a core of low potential vorticity between 100–450 m, with maximum radi ...

Secular effects of ultralight dark matter on binary pulsars

Sergey Sibiryakov, Diego Blas Temino

Dark matter (DM) can consist of very light bosons behaving as a classical scalar field that experiences coherent oscillations. The presence of this DM field would perturb the dynamics of celestial bodies, either because the (oscillating) DM stress tensor m ...

The Tucana dwarf spheroidal galaxy: not such a massive failure after all

Pascale Jablonka

Context. Isolated local group (LG) dwarf galaxies have evolved most or all of their life unaffected by interactions with the large LG spirals and therefore offer the opportunity to learn about the intrinsic characteristics of this class of objects. Aims. O ...

Pascale Jablonka, Carmela Lardo

A chemo-dynamical analysis of 115 metal-poor candidate stars selected from the narrow band Pristine photometric survey is presented based on CFHT high-resolution ESPaDOnS spectroscopy, We have discovered 28 new bright (V < 15) stars with I Fe/H]

The One-Way Communication Complexity of Submodular Maximization with Applications to Streaming and Robustness

Ola Nils Anders Svensson, Moran Feldman, Ashkan Norouzi Fard

We consider the classical problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function subject to a cardinality constraint, which, due to its numerous applications, has recently been studied in various computational models. We consider a clean multi-player model t ...

Spectroscopic Orbits Of Three Dwarf Barium Stars

Pierre North

Barium stars are thought to result from binary evolution in systems wide enough to allow the more massive component to reach the asymptotic giant branch and eventually become a CO white dwarf. While Ba stars were initially known only among giant or subgian ...
