Assessing sublimation during snow transport and sublimation effects on the isotopic composition of water vapor

Armin Sigmund

Sublimation influences the water storage in snow covers and glaciers, which is important for water use and projections of the sea level rise. Yet, it is challenging to quantify sublimation for large areas or in conditions of snow transport. In-situ measure ...

The influence of water-saturation on the strength of volcanic rocks and the stability of lava domes

Marie Estelle Solange Violay

The rocks forming a volcanic edifice or dome are typically saturated or partially-saturated with water. However, most experiments aimed at better understanding the mechanical behaviour of volcanic rocks have been performed on dry samples, and therefore mos ...

Reconstruction of the Hippocampus

Henry Markram, Felix Schürmann, Armando Romani

The hippocampus is a widely studied brain region thought to play an important role in higher cognitive functions such as learning, memory, and navigation. The amount of data on this region increases every day and delineates a complex and fragmented picture ...

Design of a Hyperloop System MockUp

Mario Paolone, Denis Tudor

The thorough development of the hyperloop system does require the availability of reduced-scale models. They can be used for the fast prototyping of various components, as well as for studying critical phenomena that takes place in this peculiar transporta ...

Study on Mechanical Performance of Prestressed UHPFRC U-Beam Bridges

Eugen Brühwiler

The forms of U-shaped UHPFRC beams have not been investigated for the highway footbridge. Compared with the traditional section forms, the U-shaped UHPFRC beams can reduce the material consumption under the condition of providing the same bearing capacity. ...

Three-dimensional and real-scale modeling of flow regimes in dense snow avalanches

Johan Alexandre Philippe Gaume, Xingyue Li

Snow avalanches cause fatalities and economic loss worldwide and are one of the most dangerous gravitational hazards in mountainous regions. Various flow behaviors have been reported in snow avalanches, making them challenging to be thoroughly understood a ...

Single-phase SPH modelling of plunge pool dynamic pressures at a near-prototype scale

Pedro Filipe De Almeida Manso

The turbulent plunging jet of a nearly incompressible fluid into a stagnant fluid is of great importance in many practical applications, especially for the engineering of hydropower. As an example, the dynamic load exerted by the impact of turbulent high-v ...

Reduced scale model testing for prediction of eigenfrequencies and hydro-acoustic resonances in hydropower plants operating in off-design conditions

François Avellan, Arthur Tristan Favrel, Joao Gomes Pereira Junior

The massive penetration of the electrical network by renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, pushes the operators to extend hydropower plant units operating range to meet the transmission system operator requirements. However, in off-design opera ...
