Aristide Henri Roger AthanassiadisAristide has a joint-PhD in Urbanism from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and The University of Melbourne on the topic of comprehensive urban environmental assessments.
Since 2018, he was co-Chair of Circular Economy and Urban Metabolism at the Université Libre de Bruxelles where he advised local administrations on the regional circular economy plan and facilitated exchanges between researchers, policy makers and practitioners in order to develop projects that helped Brussels' economy and metabolism transition towards a more circular state.
During the last years, he has collaborated and worked with/for several universities, research centres, environmental administrations, NGOs, youth organisations and consultancy firms on a great variety of projects around the topics of urban metabolism and circular economy.
Finally, Aristide co-created the non-profit organisation and open-source initiative Metabolism of Cities (www.metabolismofcities.org) that aims to bring to create, share and apply urban metabolism knowledge, in policy and practice. Yves PedrazziniYves Pedrazzini is MER / Senior Scientist in the Laboratory of Urban Sociology (LaSUR), Faculty of Natural, Architectural and Build Environment (ENAC) of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL). For more than 20 years, he analyses urban dynamics, social practices, urban cultures, violence and insecurity phenomena, in North and South countries. In 1987, he began ethnographical studies of youth armed gangs in Latin-American slums, developing innovative qualitative methods to make them real protagonists of the research process. Since 1997, Yves Pedrazzini added to his urban experience in Latin America (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela) new expertise of African urban contexts (Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Senegal). He published many books and articles on urban violence and Security/insecurity issues, from a sociological and anthropological point of view.
Marc-Edouard Baptiste Grégoire SchultheissMarc-Édouard Schultheiss is a doctoral student at the Laboratory of Urban Sociology at EPFL. He is interested in multi-day and multi-person activity-travel behaviours analyses, and he questions the effect of habits and routines on the resistances to change in the context of urban mobility practices. His research work focuses on the mechanisms of modal shift and leverages the potential of raw geolocation data and open-data for city planning.
Valentin Daniel Maurice BourdonValentin Bourdon is an architect, postdoctoral researcher and teaching assistant. He obtained the french architectural diploma in 2013 from the École d’Architecture de la Ville et des Territoires Paris-Est at Marne-la-Vallée under the direction of Jacques Lucan, and completed his PhD at EPFL in 2020, under the supervision of Luca Ortelli. Since September 2021, he coordinates the Habitat Research Center at EPFL. Involved in the studies of the Laboratory of Construction and Conservation between 2017 and 2021, he also contributes in the supervision of its Housing Studio - Project Theory and Criticism for architecture bachelor. During his doctoral research, he benefited of an academic stay at Metrolab Brussels in 2019 with the support of the SNSF, and published multiple scientific and non-academic publications. His arrival in Switzerland and return to the academic world take place after a thorough professional experience in the parisian office MGAU Michel Guthmann Architecture Urbanisme. From 2010 to 2016, he participed to the majority of its developed projects and supervised several of them, both collective dwellings projects and urban projects.
Mathias LerchAss. Prof. Mathias Lerch heads the Urban Demography Laboratory (URBDEMO) at the Faculty of Natural, Architectural and Build Environment (ENAC), Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). To improve understanding of urban population growth, Lerch has developed multi-disciplinary research interests in the components of demographic change (mortality/health, fertility and migration), as well as in their interactions with socioeconomic and environmental developments.
Before joining the EPFL, Lerch has acted as the deputy head of the Laboratory of Fertility and Well-Being at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. He has analyzed and taught population change at various Swiss and German universities, as well as at statistical offices, often in transition countries. Since 2008, he has regularly advised national governments, United Nations entities, survey programs and NGOs on population issues and data collection.
Vincent KaufmannVincent Kaufmann is associate professor of urban sociology and mobility at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Since 2011, he is also scientific director of the Mobile Lives Forum in Paris. After a master degree in sociology (Universtiy of Geneva) he did his Ph.D. at EPFL on rationalities underlying transport modal practices. Vincent Kaufmann has been invited lecturer at Lancaster University (2000-2001), Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris (2001-2002), Laval University, Québec (2008) Nimegen University (2010), Université de Toulouse Le Mirail (2011), Université Catholique de Louvain (2004-2018) and Tongji University in Shanghai (2018). There fields of research are: motility, mobility and urban life styles, links between social and spatial mobility, public policies of land planning and transportation. He recently published “Mobilité et libre circulation en Europe” (with Ander Audikana) Economica (2017).
