Francesco Gramuglia received the MEng degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 2016. From 2015 to 2016 he was a trainee in the STORMlab of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked on the development of robotic endoscope platforms. In 2016 he received the Best Application Prize and Overall Winner at Surgical Robot Challenge during the Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics at Imperial College, London, 2016. Since 2017, he has been pursuing a Ph.D. degree at the EPFL in the Advanced Quantum Architecture laboratory (AQUA) under the advising of Prof. Edoardo Charbon and Claudio Bruschini, PhD. His research is focused on the design of SPAD based CMOS image sensors and system development for use in biomedical applications, e.g. Time-of-flight Positron emission tomography (TOFPET).
I obtained my undergraduate degree in the framework of a joint program between Novosibirsk State University and École Polytechnique Paris and later completed PhD in the group of Prof. Pierre Suret and Prof. Stéphane Randoux at Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers, Atomes et Molécules (Lille, France). My research subject was related to the novel field of Integrable Turbulence that studies the dynamics of random waves in integrable nonlinear models. Experimentally, I have contributed to the development of a tool for single-shot detection of ultrafast optical fields which is considered until today to be the state-of-the-art. Upon joining the Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements at EPFL, I contribute to a project dedicated to the study of lattices of strongly coupled high-Q optical resonators.
Since 1999 Philippe Flückiger is the Director of Operations at the EPFL Center of MicroNanoTechnology, a world-class state-of-the-art cleanroom dedicated to research and development in the field of Micro and NanoFabrication. He received his diploma in physics from the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland in 1987 and his PhD from the same University in 1993. His thesis work was dedicated to the deposition, patterning and characterization of high temperature superconductor epitaxial thin films. From 1993 to 1994 he was a post doc at Stanford University to develop submicron lithography with the atomic force microscope in the group of Calvin Quate, inventor of the AFM. From 1995 to 1997 he was successively process engineer, project manager and process engineering manager at Micronas SA in Bevaix, Switzerland, a microelectronics company producing baseband processors and voltage regulators for wireless applications, mostly ASICs for Nokia Mobile Phones. In 1997 he spent 4 months in the production line of EM Microelectronic Marin SA, Switzerland, a semiconductor manufacturer specialized in the design and production of ultra low power, low voltage integrated circuits for battery-operated and field-powered applications. He joined then the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) to start the new activity in diffusion, oxidation and CVD at the Center of MicroNanoTechnology. He was appointed Director of Operations of the Center in 1999.
